1 comments about Tropical Marine Aquaria.

  1. Original pulished in 1971, this is definitely an older marine book. Surprisingly though, it has some good relavent info. For example, their is an equipment section where the advantages of protein skimming and ozonizers are discussed. The heart of the book though is its discussion on marine fish. Mr. Cox does a nice job of discussing fish behaviors, vulnerabilities to disease, etc. Pictures of fish are hand drawn paintings, and though good I would perfer a nice picture. Overall it is a good book, but there are other reef books that are much more new and better.

5 comments about Aquarium Fish of the World: The Comprehensive Guide to 650 Species.

  1. As mentioned in the other customer reviews, this book is good in the large amount of big photos and is not for thorough information for each kind of fish included.

The number of species mentioned in the book, which is therefore critical for its value, is wrongly quoted both in the heading of this webpage and in the editor review as 800 species instead of the true 650 species as printed clearly on the book cover.

I think it should be corrected and not to mislead other to buy this valuable book disappointedly.

  2. This book isn't bad but it is really only useful for identifying species. If you need more information on the care and compatibility with other species look somewhere else.

  3. This is my favorite book for browsing about species from not only the fish that I keep (ie African Cichlids), but also consider all the others. While the information isn't very deep, it certainly piques your interest because of the beautiful pictures. You can see many rare and exotic species captured here.

  4. This is a really well produced book that is full of beautiful photographs. The double page layout of similar species really helps when comparing closely related species. The text is informative but concise which is probably the book's only weak point. It only takes you a few seconds to read through the text for a species leaving you wanting to know more information.

  5. This book was a major motivating factor in my even becoming an Aquarist! Great, up to date information- Nice photos- Super-accurate descriptions of fish! Really nicely done!

2 comments about Soft Corals: Selecting and Maintaining Soft Corals Feeding and Algal Symbiosis Lighting and Water Clarity (Creating the Reef Environment).

  1. I'm more of a technical reader that needs very definite explanations and whys. Great book. I read the whole book in 1 sitting. Too bad it had to end so soon. The laminated pictures are cool too.

  2. Very informative book about soft corals, but it could have been a lot better: it speaks too vague about corals, it talks about the families and class of soft corals. I've learned some things with this book ( why soft corals uses iodine, etc ) .. Its a shame that it doesnt go more deeper and more informative: it could select the most representative corals from each family and make a quick guide ( light, position, etc etc ). It does contain a LOT of pictures, all of them in excelent quality. Too bad the book its so small ( 64 pages ... :( ), but you cant ask much more for a 10$ book. I'd recommend it to the begginner / intermediate reefer, no information for a advanced one ( a part from listing all the classes and taxonomy of soft corals ).

Add this book to your order if you make a big order and would like to read something in the bus :)

5 comments about Aquarium Owner's Guide: The Complete Illustrated Guide To The Home Aquarium.

  1. This book has a nice layout, nice pictures and good summary on fishes it carries. Unfortunately, tries to cover both fresh and salt water and has very entries of either. The tank equipment and setup guides do not go into any real detail and major things such as live rock are left out entirely for marine setups. This might be good to start interest, but don't try to setup a tank with this alone, or you may leave the hobby for good after frustrating problems and losses occur.

  2. I thought that this book would have more about different types of fish and who they really get along best with. Its an ok book for newbies but I would go to the library first and check it out before buying.

  3. This book has a lot of good details for all stages of aquarium life. It covers various subjects well. it's only "downfall" is that some of the sections could elabroate more. But of the 3 books we have, I use this one 9 out of 10 times.

  4. For those just getting started with keeping fish, this is an excellent guide. The design plans for different aquariums is especially nice, and the list of fish that would be good for a starting fishkeeper is an excellent guide to go by. The pictures in this book are gorgeous and the guide to diseases has excellent examples, which is extremely useful when diagnosing your own fish. All in all, a good starter reference, but for more in-depth coverage, an atlas by Dr. Axelrod would be a good addition to your library.

  5. I bought this book when I was first setting up my aquarium. I looked at the aquarium guides offered on Amazon.com, and bought three at once: this book, along with "Dr. Axelrod's Mini-Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes" and "The Complete Aquarium" by Peter W. Scott.

My favorite thing about this book is that the author provides quite a bit of useful information for the fishes covered in the book. For example, I didn't expect my dwarf gouramies to start breeding right away, but they did, and this book warned me that the male gets overprotective of the bubblenest and that the female needs a place to hide out and recover from spawning.

My one complaint: because the book covers freshwater, brackish, and marine fish, there are lots of omissions. I wish the book covered clown loaches...I am sure that marine aquarists would find similar oversights, but for a general reference it is quite useful.

This is a great place to start, and if I had to limit myself to just one book, this is the one that I would recommend.

1 comments about The Pocket Guide To The Care And Maintenance Of Aquarium Fish.

  1. This is a nice looking book with lots of great pictures. Thats about where the positives end. There is a lot of misinformation in this book. The information seems to be from a much earlier edition. Advice on the setup of a marine aquarium is based on info from the 70s. Some of the information about the fish is completely false. For a beginning aquarium hobbyist, this is not a good choice, it will lead you astray.
