3 comments about South American Cichlids IV (AquaLog-Reference Books).

  1. All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the Cichlid species of fishes many of which are among the most beautiful fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.

This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs and for anyone interested in Cichlids in particular and fish-keeping in general it is a book to be treasured.

  2. This is not a beginner book that deals with care or even breeding of these beautiful fish. This is a book that deals with the many wild locale forms and MANY varied aquarium colour strains that breeders have created over the years. As the book description above states, if you want breeding and care information, have a look at the Aqualog Special "Majestic Discus". This book can help you identify where your wild discus came from, or at least the form used to create the colour form swimming in your tank.

  3. If you want pictures of every possible discus or angelfish color, then this is a very good book. It seems to be targeted to breeders of show fish. For anybody else, it is probably a waste of money. There is no information on breeding or care. There is no attempt to describe the differences between the various sub-species or "breeding forms". Comparing the many beautiful pictures only adds confusion to identification. Reading the several short articles, reinforces the idea that the common discus or angelfish owner should ignore the fancy names (which seem to be very arbitrary at times) and just buy fish that appeal to you. Definitely do not spend extra money for a name.

  1. I received this book after I set up my 15 gallon and 5.5 gallon mini-reefs. I think this book does a good job in explaining everything very thoroughly. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because it just doesn't compare to talking to your local pet store. If you don't have a great local pet store then you should definitely get this book as a reference!

  2. This is with out doubt one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen.320 pages with almost 400 color photos describes and illustrates everything you need to know to set up a marine aquarium and keep it`s beautiful inhabitants. CONTENTS: Foreword.......................5 Coral Reef Environment..............9 The Coral Reef:From an Aquarist`s Perspective ..................41 Maintenance Requirments for a Mini-Reef Aquarium..............83 Water Treatment................102

Lighting......................129 Setting up a Mini-Reef Tank.............169 All About Theme Tanks................185 The Coral Fish Mini-reef Tank..........269 For Dealer`s Only....................311 Suggested Reading..................317 Index..............................319 This book is not only for marine aquarist`s, it is also a book for the ones who want to see beautiful sea creatures. My favorite chapter is "All About Theme Thanks",the 8th chapter.

  1. Small informative book. Simple to read and understand. Very good illustrations.

  2. This is a good book for those who are new to the hobby. It is a good, basic book that covers most of the details of setting up an aquarium. The book starts with choosing a tank and goes through filtration and temperature control, gravels, plants, and what fish would be good starters.

One complaint, or two actually, would be that it doesn't cover the nitrogen cycle very well at all, which is very important to understand in order to keep a healty tank. Also it doesn't explain what the differences are between the power filters and canister type filters. He seems to focus on the undergravel filters more, obviously his preference.

The book is pretty short for the eight bucks their asking. Overall it is a good book for beginners and I would recommend it as a "to get started" book.

Four stars for good basic information on how to get started and for basic recommendations on plants and fish for the beginner. It's easy to understand and very nonintimidating, unlike some books written on the subject.
