- I recently bought this book when there was a disease outbreak in my tank. Generally, it gives good information but this book should be seen as only giving an overview of the topics covered. After double checking other sites as to my fishes diagnosis, I decided to try his recommended tratment. Unfortunately, it said to place the fish in a bath for 3 hours... which unfortunately killed it.

- This book was a great help to me. I was setting up my first community fish tank, and the book gives suggestions as how to set up the entire tank. It is focused around a 20 gallon "high" tank, and tells you what fish and how many of each to put in, with several different suggestions. Following the guidelines made my life much easier, and took the stress of research on so many types of fish and plants away. The book is very well written, I would highly recommend it for someone nervous about setting up their first tank.

2 comments about The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Aquarium Fish.
- This book covers everything a beginning fish keeper needs to know. It has in depth explainations on the concepts that are hard to grasp. My favorite part of this book is the second half which covers many of the popular and unique fish that exist. While it doesn't give exact care for each fish, it tells what is neccesary to keep the species and similar fish. I reccomend this book to beginners who want to set up and learn how to properly maintain a healthy aquarium, wether it be fresh or salt water.
- This is a very good starting point for anyone interested in the aquarium hobby. It has information on setting up both marine and fresh water aquariums, plus a section at the back of the book that gives an overview on the different families of fish, both fresh water, marine and brackish water fish. It is a very good for beginners however the main downside to this book is that it is lacking information about water chemistry. This book is not to be overlooked however if you are going to buy it you are best not to stop at buying "only" this particular book before setting up your aquarium.

3 comments about Jumbo Fishes for the Giant Aquarium.
- An earlier reviewer suggested that this is a "bad" book with "terribl" (sic) pictures. I disagree. Axelrod offers insights that are useful for aquariums of all sizes, not just extremely large ones, and his insights are valuable. While the photos are not quite as GLOSSY as one can find in some books, the photos are just fine; they are clear and they nicely illustrate information contained in the text. As a newcomer to aquariums, I recently have looked at many books on fishkeeping, and while this book is not the very last word on every aspect of the hobby (i.e., it does not try to be exhaustively comprehensive), it is easily one of the most interesting to read. If you contemplate having an aquarium of larger fish, you will enjoy this book.
- Chock full of anecdotes about the fish that Axelrod has had contact with, this book is pointless if you need to actually learn something. As with most of his books, the information is limited, and often outdated. But it has nice pictures. If that is all you want, buy his Atlas. Or better, buy the Baensch atlases instead. For the people out there who can and do keep the big fish, this book won't add much to your knowledge.
- its a all around bad book pictures are terribl

3 comments about Schmidt-Fockes Discus Book.
- What a disappointment! I'd expect the well-known and respected discus breeder to really share his experience, provide tips, give some helpful info, etc. Instead, we have a poorly translated and unorganized (ala TFH) coffee table book filled with fragmentary biographical memoirs and reiterations.
The same photos are repeated over and over again, and the great Dr.Axelrod is pictured and praised on almost every page (what a surprise for a TFH book!). By the end of the book, the author is starting talking about his OBGYN practice and birth control, security at the airports and his years of medical residency. It sounds like he either got completely disoriented or was desperately trying to finish this literary nightmare.
- I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. It seems more like a biography of E. S. Focke and his personal travels. I was not happy with the amount of technical advice concerning discus. The pictures are very good. All in all, I think I wasted money.
- Dr. Schmidt-Focke should have titled this the Discus Bible! This is THE book of Discus fish. His vision and groundbreaking work with this fish has taken the discus further than anyone could have imagined or DID imagine. His views, thoughts and teaching skills can be used by the beginner as well as the professional. A must have for anyone "in" the breed! Well worth every single penney you have to pay for it. Don't miss this one!
