2 comments about Encyclopedia of Tropical Fishes: With Special Emphasis on Techniques of Breeding.

  1. A very informative guide to freshwater fish. Very handy to have when considering adding anythign to your tank.

  2. This is a nice book to read if you are mildly interested in bredding tropical fishes. If you really want to do it, you will not find the specific information you may want to have in this book. For example, in breeding Betta Splendens the author suggests water temp and aquarium size. Unforunately, water quality may well be much more important. What is the recommended Ph? Water hardness and other chemical factors if properly reproduced as the fish experiences it in the wild will help in spawning the fish. This kind of lack of information repeats itself throughout the book. Luckily it is out of print so you won't have to suffer...

2 comments about A Complete Introduction to Cichlids.

  1. Cichlids are a fascinating family of fishes, with high intelligence and complex behaviors. Robert Goldstein has written a solid introduction to keeping and breeding a wide variety of these fascinating species.

Even though it is an introduction, however, it is not a beginner-level book. Much of the material is presented in a way that assumes more knowledge of aquaria than most beginners would have.

If you like cichlids, though (Discus, freshwater Angelfish, Oscars, Mbuna to name a *very* few,) you would enjoy this book as a supplement to other materials.

  2. Can I had the copy of this book... Where and When can I buy this book, coz I really need to know more information about "Cichids". Pls. tell me how to get this one...

2 comments about Rivulins of the Old World.

  1. This book was the standard reference for identifying killifish back when it was new and is still a good reference text today. Scheel briefly described the maintenance, feeding & breeding of old world killifish, then proceeds to discuss how the species differ from each other in detail. He wrote about the scale and pigment patterns, chromosome number and shape, hemoglobin patterns, and the results of hybrid crossing experiments between different species. He also reviewed the known information about each old world killifish--some new species were described and many old species reclassified. All of this information is definitely worth having if you're a serious killifish breeder. While this book only briefly discusses how to keep and breed killies, the pictures alone are worth many times the price.

  2. Tech. volume of drawnings, photos and descriptions of the then known genera and species of African and EurAsia Killies. Not a beginners' book, but helpful in identifying the species(1968) and tracing populations to their orgins. Every serious Killifish Hobbist should have it in their Lib.
