1. If you are keeping South American Cichlids this book can be a good choice for you with it is price. It has brief and simple information but if you are expecting lots of high quality photos you will be dissapointted. It emphasizes on breeding much more than keeping them.

1. OK, it has a few nice pictures and one or two details that are of use to a first time aquarist but over all, it is of little help to anyone sensible enough to have done a small amount of research. The author is strongly opinionated and will preach rather than teach, especially when it comes to situations, species or topics he would appear to have little experience himself with. An example is when writing of fish suitable for a tank, he will relate all sorts of horror stories about his least favourite species and instead of suggesting methods for overcoming potential problems, he will admonish the reader to avoid that species of fish. This may not be a bad thing for a beginner, but there are few problems with keeping fish that cannot be easily overcome by a little research and sensible advice following, but the author of this book does not seem to advocate this approach and rather directs readers to follow his own advice as though he is the final opinion on any fish-keeping matter.
   
   My copy now resides in the local charity book shop after a single reading. I doubt they'll get a dollar for it. There is no reason to buy or keep this book when there are far better alternatives for even the most clueless beginner.

1. Photos in this book are all glossy photos, excellent pictures. It provides general information on mbuna. This book is excellent for the beginner, but a bit inadequate for the advance african cichlids aquarist. Nonetheless, it is a good book considering the price tag attacked to it.

1. Wonderful book filled with photos of over 400 individual species and good information on how to choose the right individual fish combinations for your tank.
   
   This is the perfect sourcebook for everyone - from the beginner or the experienced enthusiast to the professional breeder and fishkeeper. The author gives practical help on successful breeding with the most popular species.



2. Don't by this book for saltwater fish. The pictures on the cover are saltwater but only one chapter is dedicated to them. It may be a good book for tropical freshwater fish but I'm not interested in freshwater fish.
