4 comments about Koi Breeding.

  1. As fish breeder who travelled from Africa to where Dr. Shmuel Rothbarb and his collegues and are seriously doing wonders with koi breeding in Israel and witnessed the spawning I can say that I found the book excellent for serious breeders.

  2. Excellent and extremly acurate scientific text with plenty of high quality photos. I have most of this info from many different sources most of which are University bulletins from research projects. Not only did the author contribute his own work but included the tried and true techniques of basic fish reproductive science all in this edition. Dr. Rothbard is a leader into the field. I would like to see an update with more on the genetics currently being researched. Only complaint is that any book on fish should be safe around water like the 'Petersons Field Guides' are,

  3. I found the title of this book misleading. There is little to no relevant information on the breeding of koi from the hobbiest or small buisness owners perspective. The book provided information for large scale koi production using artificial fertilization and hatching methods.

  4. this magazine quarterly is aimed at breeding and selling koi by the millions . we are talking about mega breeding, not what a hobbyist or small breeder is trying, or probably capable of doing.very slick with beautiful pictures of little use.

2 comments about Setting Up an Aquarium (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. While some of the information in this book is accurate some of it is very dangerous for the beginning fish keeper. The worst of the bad information is in the section on what fish go well together where it says that fish are each others natural predators and pray make good tank mates.

  2. This book is an excellent book for setting up your first aquarium. It has beautiful pictures and lists fish that are suitable for beginning aquarists. From platys to angelfish this book has it all.

4 comments about Encyclopedia of Aquarium Fish.

  1. I don't speak the best english, but I can tell you this book is easy reading and will let you have a great view of what to expect if you want to start your own aquarium. Great book!

  2. This book the worst aquarium books I own. It is not a very good encyclopedia, and I find the whole "ease of keeping" thing rather hard to understand. The information is sometimes incorrect. The only thing that stopped me from giving it one star was its beautiful pictures of fish (although the variatus platy is upside down!). Overall, this is not a very useful book for the aquarium fish hobbyist.

  3. This book claims it is an encyclopedia while it is not even close! The book has big picture of any fish that shows in the book, but besides that there is NOTHING more. The major part of the description of the fish is a detailed description of how it looks, Although there is a big and clear picture of the fish! while very little or nothing is said on the caring of the fish; The pH the water should have, the hardness of the water the special cares we the Aquarists must know about in order to breed the fish. The tank mates the fish prefer or not, And many other important facts we the readers expect to find in an "Encyclopedia", this book is not worth to buy! There are books I recommend. I bought a book for marine aquarium fish and I suggest the writer of the so-called "Encyclopedia" will learn and see how a true Encyclopedia looks like. The book is: "Marine Fishes: 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species (The Pocketexpert Guide Series for Aquarists and Underwater Naturalists" this book is great!. see my review.

  4. The Encyclopedia of Aquarium Fish is an excellent reference tool for aquarists, from novice to veteran. This book contains an invaluable amount of information on an extremely large array of fish species. It is extremely handy in helping you decide on what type of fish to choose when adding new specimens to your aquarium. Everything from compatibility and size requirements to the ease-of-care rating on any particular fish is covered. I especially like how the difficulty of keeping any particular fish is rated on a scale of 1-10, very helpful. Even if you don't own or plan on buying an aquarium, this book will still be very enjoyable. The photography is excellent; every single fish in this book has a detailed photo of it so you can see exactly what it looks like. Overall, EXCELLENT!! You will not be disappointed if you buy this book.

1 comments about The Modern Reef Aquarium.

  1. This is a fantastic book that gives a low-tech approach to creating a reef aquarium that includes set-up information, how to choose an appropriate species mix, and how to maintain the tank. It also has really gorgeous photography. Although it isn't long, it's very inclusive.

I am a freshwater hobbyist who is thinking about setting up a small reef tank. Published in 1994, about the only thing this book does not cover is up-to-date protein skimmers. However, it gives a great description of how to build your own skimmer, which back in 1993 when it was written was probably the best way to get one!

I am very impressed with this book. I have read several books in preparation for investing in a reef tank, and this is by far the best I've seen.

2 comments about An Essential Guide to Choosing Your Tropical Freshwater Fish (Tankmasters Series).

  1. I am also a beginner in the hobby. This book has very limited info. If you are interested in the fish that are in the book, it might be worth it. Doesn't cover very many fish either. There isn't any info on what fish is compatable with the fish that they are talking about. It does say the temperment of the fish or how many fish to keep together, but if the different types of fish aren't compatable, what difference does it make how many you have ?? Many better books out there !!

  2. Being a beginner aquarist myself, I found this book to be brilliant. It has a few pages on general fish information, as well as an explanatory book outline in the beginning. A page per fish information follows this. Each page on a particular fish has the following information: Large color photo, General information, Size of fish, Compatibility issues if they exist, Breeding habits, Origin. It also has a section indicating the ideal aquarium set-up for each fish that includes the following: Water quality, Temperature, Food, Number per tank, Minimum tank size. I found this book very helpful in choosing my fish and realizing the importance of compatibility. You would need to do some extra research, but the book is essential for beginners!
