1. this is a good book on the subject,ive had it for a few year my self,and it is informative,and gives you the information you will need on keeping and breeding those wonderful catfishes.

1. The book is gradually moving toward obsolescence, but only because other C/A Cichlid surveys have the advantage of being written at a time when discovery of these fish is at an all-time high. It is one of the best affordable surveys of C/A Cichlids and their care and should be treated as such. Almost every common aquarium denizen from this group is covered by his masterpiece.

   He admits that this is but a survey during the species description chapters...it should only be read with that in mind, but, if you are a newbie to Cichlids and you have a commonly-kept C/A Cichlid, this is the book for you.




2. This book is very similar to any other Central American Cichlid book. It has mainly very common species and doesn't try to be different from any other books on the same subject. It gives very basic and sometimes questionable information. Overall, I give it a 3 out of 5. Personally, I'd look for a book with many more species including the rarer types and more infomration about tank behavior. You'll be hard pressed to find a book with both.

1. If you are keeping South American Cichlids this book can be a good choice for you with it is price. It has brief and simple information but if you are expecting lots of high quality photos you will be dissapointted. It emphasizes on breeding much more than keeping them.

1. I am also a beginner in the hobby. This book has very limited info. If you are interested in the fish that are in the book, it might be worth it. Doesn't cover very many fish either. There isn't any info on what fish is compatable with the fish that they are talking about. It does say the temperment of the fish or how many fish to keep together, but if the different types of fish aren't compatable, what difference does it make how many you have ?? Many better books out there !!



2. Being a beginner aquarist myself, I found this book to be brilliant. It has a few pages on general fish information, as well as an explanatory book outline in the beginning. A page per fish information follows this. Each page on a particular fish has the following information: Large color photo, General information, Size of fish, Compatibility issues if they exist, Breeding habits, Origin. It also has a section indicating the ideal aquarium set-up for each fish that includes the following: Water quality, Temperature, Food, Number per tank, Minimum tank size. I found this book very helpful in choosing my fish and realizing the importance of compatibility. You would need to do some extra research, but the book is essential for beginners!

1. OK, it has a few nice pictures and one or two details that are of use to a first time aquarist but over all, it is of little help to anyone sensible enough to have done a small amount of research. The author is strongly opinionated and will preach rather than teach, especially when it comes to situations, species or topics he would appear to have little experience himself with. An example is when writing of fish suitable for a tank, he will relate all sorts of horror stories about his least favourite species and instead of suggesting methods for overcoming potential problems, he will admonish the reader to avoid that species of fish. This may not be a bad thing for a beginner, but there are few problems with keeping fish that cannot be easily overcome by a little research and sensible advice following, but the author of this book does not seem to advocate this approach and rather directs readers to follow his own advice as though he is the final opinion on any fish-keeping matter.
   
   My copy now resides in the local charity book shop after a single reading. I doubt they'll get a dollar for it. There is no reason to buy or keep this book when there are far better alternatives for even the most clueless beginner.
