5 comments about The Modern Coral Reef Aquarium, Vol. 1.
- There are those who swear by Delbeek and Sprung's series whereas others gravitate toward Fossa and Nilsen series. Personally I think the modern marine aquarist should have both and they both have something to contribute and offer a slightly different perspective. For the beginner though one should decide to follow one set of advice and only after some experience try to assimilate the works of many authors and slowly experiment.
For some Fossa and Nilsen some might find a little more approachable and straight forward.
In the end I believe it is a matter of personal taste.
- This book is a great guide to those who approach the coral reef aquarium and are specially interested in knowing why things happen such a way. Try to read it and you'll get delighted for sure.
Finally, I should mention it's full of magnificient photos, both from aquariums and nature.
- This book is simply amazing. That's all I have to say.
- This was an excellent book, which was so easy to read and understand.Even if you never thought about owning a saltwater aquarium , this book will make you start one. It has alot of detail, discusses alot of equipment and how to use it.It discusses every aspect of the hobby and it should be one of the first books on your bookshelf if you have a saltwater aquarium. It not only talks about setting up the aquarium, but it also talks about what fish to put in the aquarium.Fossa and Nilsen are great authors and know everything about saltwater aquariums, buy their books if you can, their well worth the money.
- This book is what I have always been looking for. A great reference on cnidarians that is not to complicated. The price is very high, but indeed,it is worth the money as it deals with 500+ species of corals and other cnidarians, some of which I have seen in no other of my fantastic fish/invertebrate books. It includes descriptions of more than 40 species of horn corals as well as a lot of sea anemones, which are very beautifull. This book is actually an updated, english edition of the norwegian 1992 book "Korallrevsakvariet Band 4". The authors are very experienced and they truly show that with all advices they give about keeping a saltwater aquarium in this book. It is definitly magnificent. Unfortunatley,I do not keep living cnidarians my self. I am just studying about them as wild animals. But the book was worth it and it made me discover a series of books that may be the best survey ever made on marine life, although more species would have been a good idea (1000 or more would be able to cover a book of this dimensions)I will soon buy the other ones. I`ll highly recommend it!

2 comments about The Complete Aquarium Problem Solver.
- I found this a great book as a guide to solve problems with my tropical fish. It is easy to read and easy to understand. I love the pictures, they are very helpful. For the price this book should be a part of every persons' library who is serious about having tropical fish as a pet. Buy it, you'll love it.
- This book is very good for the freshwater fish keeper or the beginner / intermediate marine hobbyist. The book contains very easy to read and useful flow charts to analyze fish and tank problems. The text is also very good and useful. It gives treatments for many diseases (including color photographs), as well as advice on keeping a healthy tank. I enjoyed the funny artwork as well! A great reference. Advanced marine reef keepers may find the book a little basic.

3 comments about Goldfish and Fancy Goldfish (AQUALOG Special series).
- I have a number of goldfish books and am in search of the "Goldfish Bible". I was hoping this was it but will have to keep looking. This is an interesting book - no doubt about that. The author is a German enthusiast who spent a number of years in Japan and China and developed a clear passion for goldfish. The photos are first class and among the best photos of goldfish I've seen. The book includes a large poster of goldfish varities- too large to be practical (unless you're planning to frame it and put it on your wall....) but, with close study, it might help you work through the varieties. The information is interesting- especially the explanation of the different varieties and what to look for. No much you can't find in the other specialist texts but it certainly is quirky. Some of the written English is clumsy but charming in its own way. There are spelling and punctuation errors here and there. Overall, I have to admit I was expecting more from the book in the way of information because these were billed as the "specialist texts". So i was disappointed. But, if you're really into goldfish and can't get enough pictures or enough of the same information explained in a slightly different way, then this book is for you.
- All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the cold water species Goldfish and Fancy Goldfish which are among the most beautiful cold water fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.
This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs and for anyone interested in Goldfish in particular and fish-keeping in general it is a book to be treasured.
- The 1st half of the book was pretty dry about the history and the last half was very informative. This was to be a present to a person who loves goldfish and would only like the last part of this book as it would answer her questions. I wouldn't give this to a beginner but to an experinced hobbist.

1 comments about Catfish (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- A mother of one of the authors, I mean. Everyone else will be annoyed at this book.
The biggest gripe I have with this book is that it makes a big deal about how you should always refer to catfish by their Latin names. It explains in a hoity-toity way that it's really not being hoity-toity to do this, because it's just being pragmatic. It says that it's unreasonable to refer to catfish by their common names, because often a Latin name for a catfish can have two or three common names.
However, after all of that, the rest of the book mostly uses the common names for the catfish, using only the Latin names in the section headings. Except for the "L" catfish, which don't yet have Latin names. Sound boring? It is.
The book is poorly laid out, too. It would have been cool if the catfish pictures corresponded with the catfish that the page talked about. They didn't though.
And, this book talks a lot about the basics of aquarium setup. Like, it dedicates a few pages to choosing the correct filter for your aquarium.
This book looks like it's just a stock book about aquariums that got recycled for catfish. I kept trying to figure out if the writers actually knew anything about catfish, or if they just found a bunch of information from the internet and compiled it in this book. By about ten pages from the end, they finally said something in the book that convinced me that they knew a little, personally about catfish.
Overall, my advice is to choose any other book on catfish rather than this book. If you don't know anything about catfish, the Latin will be too inaccessible. If you know a lot about catfish, the basics of aquariums will be too simplistic.

2 comments about The Guide to Owning Angelfish: Disease, Varieties, Care, Species, Breeding (Aquatic).
- I'm still on the hunt for a good all-around book to describe more about taking CARE of angelfish, in regard to feeding, personalities, water chemistry/temperature, what they like/dislike, yadda yadda. But lots of good pictures, and I thought a lot was devoted to the different varieties of angelfish (although I'm sure there are so many that it would be difficult to show them all)
- This is a good first angelfish book. I was a little disapointed though because I would like to see them show more varities of angelfish. They only showed a select few. They don't have much information on genetics either.
Over all I did learn some from this book and the pictures they did have are really good. So if you aren't looking for a book on all varieties of angelfish with lots of information this book is a good start for your collection of books. I refer to it quite a bit.
