3 comments about Aqualog: Loricariidae All L-Numbers, New 2nd. Edition.

  1. All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about the beautiful L Number now coming into the aquarist trade or some other species of fish they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated. There is not a lot of literature on African cichlids so this book is invaluable.

They do not deal with the basics of fish keeping, there are many and varied books that do that. They are in the main a fish identification encyclopaedia and not a lot more. But for those aquarists who are particularly interested in a single species they are indispensable.

  2. This book is the best Loricariidae Identification book, it has massive of good quality pictures, it tells reader how big the species can be and little bit about how to keep them in captive. For each L number, there is a brief intro at the beginning of the book. Anyone loves plecos must own this book.

  3. Very good. The L's reference book. Not good at all if what you're really looking is how to maintain, breed or make your Pleco happier.
But if you just want to browse all species known so far, or recognize any Loricariidae you encounter - this is it. Lots of good pictures, all L Numbers up to 350, and LDAs up to 76 covered with a short symbols near the picture, translating into how much they grow, what they eat, how big should your tank be, kind of water conditions needed, etc...
Mainly targeted at shopkeepers who always have a real hard time to identify this fishes. I love Plecos, so it was a must have for me!

1 comments about The Living Pond: Water Gardens with Fish & Other Creatures.

  1. Creating a water garden is yet another way to attune oneself with nature. This water garden concept is actually a pond. Author Helen Nash provides clear basic instructions on how to both build and maintain a pond with live fish, turtles or birds. You no longer have to envy the tranquility of Jane and Henry Fonda's "On Golden Pond" shimmering screen images. You may be inspired to begin building your own pond as soon as you finish reading this book. Ms. Nash has crafted a fine book for those who appreciate the beauty of nature. Leave the tension in the workplace. Come home to the peace and tranquility of a living pond in your very own backyard.

4 comments about The Natural Aquarium: How to Imitate Nature in Your Home.

  1. I recieved this book about 4 days ago and looking through it find it a great resource. They used some very unusual method of prniting the images, they are super glossy almost like photos stuck into the book ratehr than a printed page. Very clear images. A little more info on tending for plants, substrate and filtration would have been great too.
all in all well worth the purchse.

  2. This is a beautifully photographed book, with many ideas for creating natural or biotope type aquarium setups. They range from heavily planted setups to rocky Rift Lake tanks. There are suggestions for fish, plants and technical considerations. The book does not go into large amounts of detail about individual fish species or habitats, but if you are looking for inspiration on aquascaping your tank(s), it is one of the best books I have seen on the subject.

  3. I find myself repeately browsing the stunning photos for ideas. The data tables are a very useful list of optimal water conditions for each habitat. This is not a biology book, but an excellent resource for someone who wants to plan an aquascape. This book lists combinations of plants and fish (a very helpful start, in a hobby with thousands of options.) Now I can narrow my search for specific information on specific species of plants and fish from other books. This is a book that I go back to over and over.

  4. This book looks very nice. But after reading it i was greatly disappointed. No news, just traditional aquarium setups. And the setups not remotely loking natural. To many species of plants organized like a suburbian garden, not like the wildernes af amazon jungle river or pond. The authors are not very creative. No new suggestions on which materials to use, and on top of that, the book is full of adds, and do deliver any objective or new perspectives on the technical setup of a fish tank that could help you create the illusion of a natural aquarium. all in all Dissapointing

3 comments about The New Aquarium Handbook: Everything About Setting Up and Taking Care of a Freshwater Aquarium (New Pet Handbooks).

  1. Perfect Aquarium Handbook. It covers virtually all aspects of freshwater aquarium fish and plant keeping. Perfect for someone looking for a general reference when setting up or maintaining any freshwater aquarium.

  2. This general reference book is excellent as it provides clear, simple, easy to follow explanations of some technical concepts involved in aquarium management: lighting, filtration, water chemistry & it's upto date with the latest products.

  3. This is an excellent resource for the new aquarist. It is much like the one for salt water tanks and is designed in such a way that it will take you step by step through the processes of chosing a tank, chosing the right equipment, choosing fish, invertabrae, and plants, and finally, taking care of the aquarium.

1 comments about Aqualog: All Rainbows and Related Families.

  1. All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the Rainbow species of fishes many of which are among the most beautiful fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.

This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs and for anyone interested in Rainbows in particular and fish-keeping in general it is a book to be treasured.

5 comments about Handbook of Tropical Aquarium Fishes.

  1. My daughter thinks that Axelrod is the most knowledgeable person regarding fish and aquariums and requested a couple of his books for Christmas. Some of his stuff is pretty old, but this was one of the newer ones (the older one has black and white pictures), so she was thrilled.

  2. Book was bought for my grandaughter who was always referring to my 30 year old copy.
She mainly uses it for fish descriptions with which she is happy.

  3. If you decide you must have this book, make sure you get the 4th edition! I bought a 3rd edition from 1983 and despite its NEW condition got none of the pages of color photos that others rave about. The 3rd edition is on low quality paper, with only B&W photos, many of which are too dark to be of use. Additionally, because this book (regardless of edition) is in fact a reprint of the original published in 1955, it does contain lots of dated information regarding equipment and various aquarium set-up and maintenance practices.

In my humble opinion....save your money despite the low prices for this huge book in good used condition and buy a more up to date book with full color illustrations and less "intellectual" language.

  4. Despite the fact that Dr. Axelrod wrote the text over 20-25 years ago, it is an excellent source for the various aquarium topics that all aquarium keepers eventually run across and need a reference book.

Information about various equipment and supplies are outdated but that information can be found in many different sources. If that is a major interest, this book will not help you. However, it does provide rich and detailed material about diseases, fish anatomy, fish behavior and requirements for aquariums.

This book delivers useful and detailed information that leaves nothing to the imagination.

  5. I liked this book because i could look up pictures of many different fish. it has a lot of general information on livebearers and egg layers. what i did not like was: 1. The information about the fish and the photos were not together. After you read something about a fish you had to look it up seperatly to find a picture of it. there was information on some fish that were not pictured and pictures of some fish with no information on them. 2. there is no fish disease section 3. they talk about plants but there are no pictures of them 4, the filters they talk about are mostly outdated... no modern type filters like wet/dry or cannister, biotypes. if you want a cheap book that explains about breeding and to use it to identify fish this is a good one. The new hybrids are not included though and there is way too much information on the origination and patent of the ______ fish [i forgot, it was a section that i skipped] To be honest I just use the book for pictures only so I can look up the information elsewhere like on the internet.
