1 comments about The Guide to Plants for the Reptile Terrarium (Guide To...(T.F.H. Publications)).
- The book isn't the best. Its short a mere 64 pages and a good number of the pages are covered with pictures. The lighting section was useful but you could of gotten the rest of the information from a houseplant book.

5 comments about Discus As a Hobby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started (Save-Our-Planet Book).
- I didn't care for this book and here's why. The author's coverage is much too superficial to be really useful for getting started in this hobby. You certainly need more than what is in this book, yet the very misleading title states it has "everything you need to know".
The book is heavy on photos and light on details. The author isn't shy about giving his opinions which would be good, but unfortunately he doesn't always say why. At one point he states that under-gravel filters are bad, but tells us since much has been written about them the reader can find out why elsewhere. True enough, but excuse me, why am I bothering with this book? It is supposed to have "everything you need to know" isn't it? The fact is there is nothing in this book that can't be found in better detail, and free, by doing an internet search of various Discus related web sites. However, I do recommend a much better book, "Discuss Fish" by T. Giovanetti which has much more information, and better, detailed explanations. Overall score: Thumbs way down.
- The purpose of this book is to aid the beginning discus hobbiest. It does this well by providing all of the basics to start anyone down the right path to keep discus. For the more advanced hobbiest it doesn't offer as much, but that wasn't the purpose of this volume.
- I have owned this book for several years. I also own several "coffee-table" sized books on Discus. But this is the book I find myself referring to most for information on how to keep my Discus healthy. The author's practical, no-nonsense style is informative, and very easy to read. It is a bargain, considering all the good tips and advice contained within. Highly recommended for beginning to intermediate-level aquarists who want to raise "The King of the Aquarium".
- I found that the book had real information that you can apply when getting started in the hobby. I find myself going back to the book time and time again finding small bits of useful techniques that I missed reading it the first time. I have found that if you apply the advice given in the book you will get off to a great start with the fish and have many years of enjoyment to look foward too. For such a small book it is packed with excellent advice that other books overlook and just want to show you photos of fish. This book really tells you how to do things. This is book is a must read to add to your collection.
- The man has forgotten more than the rest of us will ever know.

2 comments about Beginner's Guide to Saltwater Aquariums.
- In setting up my first saltwater aquarium, I was looking for a more in depth book. I was rather disappointed as all the information contained within, I had already read about with simple online searches and pamphlets from the pet store. It does have a comprehensive fish guide which is 3/4 of the book if you are interested in finding out what fish will live well together.
- This book is the best I've found regarding saltwater aquariums. I think it's great not just for beginners but also for people like me who have started a tank some time ago and can't get the fish to last very long. It included just about everything I needed to know to get started but was very easy to read as it sticks to the basics without overloading you with a bunch of technical marine biology talk like some of the other books I've seen. Great in depth analysis of the types of saltwater fish. The book's information on water temperature was something I had never heard before and that alone was worth the price in my case. As they say in the book some of their ideas definitely go against what you normally hear in pet stores and other books so just keep that in mind. But I used to not be able to keep fish like Tangs alive in my tank for any length of time until I tried some of their new ideas. My tank is now in great shape after reading this, great book!

5 comments about Complete Encyclopedia of the Freshwater Aquarium.
-
I was really hesitant to give this book only three stars, because it actually is very well-written and quite nicely illustrated. My main objection to the book is its scope, reflected in its slightly misleading title. In a well-intentioned effort to write a comprehensive one-volume reference, the author glosses over too many principles which a beginner should learn in detail, and skims over (or omits) some essential information on advanced topics.
As a broad overview of home aquarium science, the book is great; as a reference for either the beginning or the advanced aquarist, it will likely prove to be of limited practical use. Someone who is just starting out would do far better to purchase one or two of the many good beginner's books offered on this site. (If you're reading this, it means that you're checking the readers' reviews, which is probably the best way to find the most suitable books for your needs.)
- I found information on fish that I could not find in other basic bread and butter books. While it does not have pictures of the more common species, those can be found in less expensive books. This is a book for the more advanced hobbyist, yet can be a great help for anyone with it's broad coverage. If you want a book covering basic species, go somewhere else. If you have been finding some of the rarer fishes in your pet shop that most books do not cover, then you will find this book helpfull. I do wish it covered more of the Corydoras, and included pictures for all the fish it describes however. All and all, it is nice to see current latin names used, and advice on keeping the rarer fish that seem to be showing up in greater numbers these days.
- I found this book disappointing. Photographs of some of the more common species that are available at local stores were not shown. If there was a photograph of a species somewhere in the book the description segment did not give a reference page for the photograph. Knowing what rare fish look like is nice but not helpful for most novice collectors. In most pet stores these exotic fish are not available.

5 comments about The Cichlid Aquarium.
- definitely one of the better cichlid books on the market. lot's of information on a wide variety of cichlids from mating behavior to habitat. ...
- This book was a little bit of an disappointment for me. It has good guidlines on how your cichlid aquarium should be and how to maintain it. But it doesn't tell you alot about the fish and lacks information about them such as habits, size, diet etc.
I would not recomend this to a hobbyist who wants to learn more about the fish themselves.
- Very interesting book. Gives a lot of information byt if you want specific information on your fish it does not give. It doesnt have an index making things very hard when you want to find specific info.
- Excellent book. Great photos. No index? Huh? C'mon PaulV. and Dr. Loiselle. Did you guys both make the Homer Simpson "DOAH" sound after you published this and realized you forgot an index. Very frustrating. I still grab this book from time to time for reference and habitually look to the INDEX, but alas, there is none. Can you say REVISED EDITION?
- This book is definetely not for the beginner cichlid keeper. Although it provides some basic information on tank setup etc, it is geared toward the advanced aquarist.
As is typical from Loiselle the information is concise and in depth. Only the lack of a decent index mars this otherwise excellent book.

2 comments about Essential Guide to Keeping Goldfish (Tankmaster (Interpet Publishing)).
- this book is very good
lots to know about Goldfish and the care of the tank.
Gets right to the point.
- This book is all right if you don't want to try to treat medical conditions yourself. The descriptions of health related conditions were incomplete, and treatment rather limited. Too much space devoted to the nitrogen/ammonia cycle, and did not give a good description or explanation of how to cycle your aquarium. Therefore, that section merely took up space. The photos are the same photos that I have seen in several other goldfish books. If you only buy one book on keeping goldfish, this wouldn't be the one I'd recommend.
