2 comments about Muskets of the Revolution and the French & Indian Wars.
- Muskets Of The Revolution And The French & Indian Wars is an extensive reference, history, and discussion of the smoothbore longarm musket as used in Early America. Covering British, French, Dutch, German, Spanish and American weapons, Muskets of the Revolution is filled with black- and-white photographs of sample muskets on virtually every page, and the thoroughly researched and detailed history is supplemented with footnotes, a bibliography, and an index. A "must-have" resource for collectors, historians and gun aficionados, Muskets Of The Revolution And The French & Indian Wars covers its topic with singular depth and brilliance.
- Perhaps I am a bit spoiled having been lucky enough to acquire a copy of George Moller's American Militery Shoulder Arms but I do think that though this work is overpriced and does not measure up to that standard it is still an excellent source of information on the shoulder weapons of this period and would serve as an excellent companion to George Neuman's Battle Weapons of the American Revolution. Another great book to go with it would be the excellent work of Flintlock Fowlers by Tom Grinslade. Its own section on Colonial fowlers though good would be well augmented. It also provides insights into some of the fighting men of the period. It certainly could use a little work on the French section as well as German but none the less is an excellent book.

2 comments about Small Arms-Hardbound (Greenhill Military Manual).
- First of all I am a real enthusiast of weapons, this is one of my six-greenhill military manuals. It is a very interesting book that reads very well and the author likes to keep it general. It covers a lot of military weapons from revolvers, pistols and assault rifles. I recommend this book to those who like to know information about general weapons.
And if your not a weapons freak!!, don't do my error of buying a book titled (modern military rifles, Greenhill military manuals) because it's information is likely the same as this book except for handguns. Overall I am very happy with my Greenhill Military Manuals.
- An interesting reference guide for a few of the world's popular firearms. Unfortunately, the nice hardcover spoils what essentially is just a "flip-book" of sorts. Not much meat in the background and current usage on each, but it appears as if the majority of the description lies in the detailing of the gun's internal operation and its development. In my opinion, I feel that same space could be put to better to use for a reference book of this type: I'm not trying to build the gun, I want to know about it in its real-world standpoint! Pictures are also seriously lacking; only two plain pictures and one internal diagram for most. Perhaps I am being little harsh, so I'm giving it 4 points, just to be fair.
My bottom line: Buy this book if you want to start a reference collection or if you really have nothing else to buy. A good read, but there are clearly others better out there.

4 comments about The Winchester Model 94: The First 100 Years.
- This is the review of Robert C. Renneberg's book The Winchester Model 94: The First 100 Years" that I wrote for Bullet 'N Press in December 2002.
In production for over one hundred years, and with over seven and one half million of these rifles produced so far, there isn't any question that the most popular deer rifle in America is the Winchester Model 1894, and that it has held that favorite spot for quite some time. The author begins with a concise, accurate history of this timeless lever action that starts with it's designer John Moses Browning and carries right up through the post 1964 models, the commemoratives and the latest angle eject 94's. Every aspect of the 1894 is covered; engineering changes, alterations, finishes, calibers and wood, often in great detail. The components, and variations thereof, are graphically presented with very clear close-up black and white photography. Collectors love it when information is offered to them in such a way that it quickly answers all their questions. So often I have been asked "Can you show me what to look for with such and such a detail, so I will know what I am buying?". This is that book for the Winchester 1894, it answers questions quickly and it shows you what and where. Fanciers of the Winchester Model 1894 will be absolutely delighted with what is in this book for it truly gives you "everything you ever wanted to know about the 1894 Winchester", as well as covering a lot of questions you probably wouldn't have thought to ask. I also enjoyed seeing the excerpts from early 20th century Winchester salesman's catalogs, where for instance, a standard 38-55 caliber carbine could be had for the hefty sum of $17.50! This reviewer was very impressed with the large amount of well presented information and the attention that is given to accurate photographic illustration. The book was a joy to read and I would highly recommend it for the library of anyone who collects or who simply enjoys Winchester's wonderful Model 1894.
- I have read a number of books on Winchester Firearms. I especially liked this one. Anyone who reads this book will learn something new.
Things I picked up. Until now Winchester never produced a factory 410 guage lever action shotgun. Half Octagon/ Half Round Carbines are very rare. Take a look at the Lone Star Commemorative.
- Of all the Winchester reference books and there are many, this is by far the most informative. Logically arranged to take the reader smoothly through the myriad variations found in this model and featuring great photography, excellent captioning and none of those usless "filler" pages so often found in books of this type, you will quickly find that every page is a treat. Highly recommended for all Winchester fans; essential for the serious Model 1894/94 collector.
- This reference work was obviously researched and assembled by an avid fan of the subject. Mr. Renneberg takes the reader through a logical and orderly journey describing the myriad variations of the Winchester Model 94 in amazingly infinite detail; a journey that should be taken by any serious collector of this model. While retaining the literary demeanor of a true reference work, the easy-reading style of Mr. Renneberg's prose make the book enjoyable and entertaining. If you are in any way a fan of Winchester's most successful product, you will be unable to put this book down. Fine photographs and descriptive captioning highlight the exceptionally informative text. The very best of it's kind.

1 comments about Shooting the Black Powder Cartridge Rifle.
- Kind of an autobiographical account of Mr. Matthews experiences with these rifles, you get some history of the field and quite a bt of advice on how to do certain things. There's stuff on casting bullets and loading cartridges, shooting advice, some on equipment. What you do not get is a manual on how to take some certain rifle and hit your target when you shoot, there are some tips though.
I wouldn't recommend this book as a one and only do all but it is worth reading.

2 comments about Muzzleloading (Complete Hunter (Creative Publishing International).).
- This is a nicely done introduction into muzzleloader hunting. The writing was very thorough and the pages were lavishly filed with quality color photos. Most every aspect of owning, safely using and maintaining muzzleloaders were covered. Hunting with these unique weapons was of course covered in detail.
The book was a little slanted toward the "modern" muzzleloader crowd. While I am less interested in this, I can understand why this would be a hot topic to many hunters. The person who co-authored this book, Tony Knight, is credited with starting this phenomenon in the 1980s. This is great introduction and I would highly recommend it for someone interested in the sport. It will certainly serve as a jumping off point for further study. For some, however, it may be the only book you need on the topic.
- To begin with, this is a very elegant looking book, it is definatly worthy of a cofee table or other such display. It is a hardback and it contains many beautifull photographs of black powder rifles from modern in-lines to the first matchlock rifles. The book is also very informative. The author discusses and explains flintlock, percusion, and in-line muzzleloading rifles. Besides rifles he also includes blackpowder shotguns and pistols. The book has a chapter concerning the pros and cons of the differant types of projectiles and which is best for certain types of firearms. The author explains many differant accesories one needs and also how to use them. He explains how to safely load and fire a muzzleloader, how to clean it, and how to find an effective load. The author also covers hunting deer and other big game with frontloaders. There is even a section on how to select and build your own black powder rifle from a kit. Myself, being a newcomer to muzzleloading, find this book very clear and informative. It has definatly intrested me in pursuing muzzleloading and perhaps even building my own gun.
