1 comments about The Shooter's Guide to Classic Firearms.

  1. From the editors of Guns & Ammo Magazine comes an authoritative guide to historic and modern firearms in THE SHOOTER'S GUIDE TO CLASSIC FIREARMS, which offers a 'classic test' series to consider the history, technology and operation of selected world firearms. From performance specs and capabilities to history and design, color photos pair with excellent articles and history.

3 comments about Civil War Firearms: Their Historical Background And Tactical Use.

  1. For those currently playing soldier with these weapons this is a good book to have but for the historian it has little real value.

    Cumbersom and difficult in reading.

  2. Jo Bilby's work on Civil War Firearms is invaluable. I have referred to my copy numerous times and it has become dogeared with use. Mr. Bilby is a kind and highly intelligent man who has done history buffs a great service by providing this book. If you enjoy this book also check out his other works: "Mr. Bilby is the author of Three Rousing Cheers: A History of the 15th New Jersey Infantry from Flemington to Appomattox, Forgotten Warriors: New Jersey's African-American Civil War Soldiers, Remember Fontenoy: The 69th New York and the Irish Brigade In the Civil War and co-editor, with Steven O'Neill, of My Sons Were Faithful and They Fought: The Irish Brigade At Antietam...

  3. The book covers the history of and tactics used for several Civil War firearms. These guns include smoothbores, sharpshooters, repeaters, and several others. Joseph Bilby's research into the historical aspect of each weapon is excellent and worthy of praise. Bilby also provides an invaluable supply and information list near the end of the book. Collectors will find this part of the book very helpful for locating pieces to add to their collection.

1 comments about Spring-loaded Fish Hooks, Traps & Lures: Identification and Value Guide (Identification & Values (Collector Books)).

  1. My husband and I know one of the authors, Tim Mierzwa, personally. He told us in August of 2005 that he had a book coming out about fishing lures and other equipment. We weren't sure what to think. But when we received the book recently, my
husband and I were extremely impressed on the detail, the photos, explanations and layout of the book! My husband enjoys
fishing and I don't, but BOTH of us are enjoying the book
immensely! I am now ordering another copy for the outdoor club
we live in to share with the members. For anyone interested in
fishing, collecting fishing gear and/or the history and value of fishing gear, this is THE book to own!

2 comments about Collins Machetes and Bowies, 1845-1965.

  1. The book has alot of information. I own one of the old Machetes and it was quite interesting to read about it. I would highly recommend this bood to anyone owning a Collins Machete.

  2. Since I appear many times in the text of this book as an observor, as a facilitator, and as a source, it may be considered presumptuous for me to review it. But since I am competent to do so, here goes. Ed and I knew each other from 1971 when we first met. Since I am in MD and he was in CA our face time was limited but we kept in close touch by snail mail and phone. He made many trips to the source at Collinsville and I dug a large amount of materials out of the National Archives, Smithsonian, and the Library of Congress. Since Ed focused strictly on Collins products and only on the sub lines of machetes and I am interested in all military edged tools and cutlery as well as axe work in general, we overlapped our interests. Is this the book I have written or would have? Certainly not, but I know for certain that it is all in focus and, unless there is a new vast discovery of documents, if there is anything more to be known about Collins machetes you can put in a very small pot. By focusing as he did Ed was able to find things that I never did nor even thought to look for. The ultimate test of this kind of book is is it interesting, and is it useful? I think it is so, and I wll be able to chop out all the corporate history which was in my original work and refer the reader to this one. Carter Rila

2 comments about Guns on the Early Frontiers: From Colonial Times to the Years of the Western Fur Trade (Dover Books on Americana).

  1. An excellant history of weapons used by people on the frontier of America. Fur traders, indians as well as those during the Colonial Period. Very useful for Historical Archaeologists, collectors and gun nuts.Clear reading in understandable language.

  2. This is the new 2005 reprint of this classic book originally published in 1957. As the title says, it covers the frontier as it moved from the original colonies to the west.

The first story takes place on July 30, 1609 when a fellow killed a captured Iroquois with a single shot from an arquebus. From there it goes on to to the mid 1800's ending with the first battle of the Mexican War. ==The treatment that the book gives these guns is a combination of technical, especially as this was the time of great improvements from the matchlock of 1609 to Colt's revolvers, and of the history of their use such as that by Walker which resulted in the definition of the Walker Colt. It is illustrated with 58 line drawings that show both the weapons and the people who used them.

This book covers an area that has largely been ignored in other books. It is well written and recommended for readers with this interest.

3 comments about The Tactical Folding Knife: A Study of the Anatomy and Construction of the Liner-Locked Folder.

  1. Very good and informative book. I wish it had color photos instead of B&W

  2. Robert Terzuola's name will be instantly recognizable to knife collectors the world over as the veteran maker of some of the finest tactical knives available. In this excellent book, Terzuola shares his knowledge of the new 'hot' item among collectors - the tactical folding knife.

The book covers design, shaping, fitting and finishing tactical folders in a refreshingly readable style. Simple enough for even non-knife enthusiasts yet detailed enough for new makers looking to improve their work - a great combination. Accompanied by masterful advice, clear step-by-step photographs, and superb diagrams of the famous linerlock mechanism, this book is worth every cent for the information value alone. If you are a beginning maker or simply interested in how much craftsmanship goes into these tools, you need to look no further than this book.

  3. Robert Terzuola's many years of experience as a custom knife maker are thoughtfully distilled into this handy and interesting book. "The Tactical Folding Knife" details and explains the many aspects of the design and construction of a modern folding knife. This book presupposes a certain level of technical proficiency regarding the use of the industrial tools needed to produce a folding knife of this type, but this fact does not detract from its accessibility for both the experienced machinist and the curious enthusiast. This book is broken down into chapters that illustrate not only the basic design and construction of a locking liner folding knife, but also includes chapters describing the characteristics of different component materials, helpful tips regarding specialized tools and a section on the care and maintenence of a finished knife. Although I don't think I will rush out and buy a lathe, I do feel that this book illuminates the subject in a way that can be appreciated by the layman as well as the experienced machinist

3 comments about Standard Catalog Of Firearms, 15th Edition (Standard Catalog of Firearms).

  1. This is a very comprehensive book and contains information on almost every gun ever made I bet. Sometimes the information is little sparse but at least it gives you a bit of technical data to allow you to start researching elsewhere. I highly recommend this book as a reference source.

  2. This catalog is best source of info for the gun collector or enthusiast. Amazon provides the best price and service for book purchases.

  3. This book is pretty informative. It goes indepth into the history of individual firearms as well as giving a price range per respective condition. Only thing they don't tell you is that many standard military weapons are not included in this edition.

Inorder to evaluate those you have to purchase the Standard Catalog of Military Firearms.

If you aren't so much interested in Military firearms then this is the book for you.
