2 comments about The Winchester Single-Shot, Vol. 1.
- John Campbell is to the Winchester Single-Shots as Frank Sellers is to the Sharps. This book, and its Volume II, are outstanding books about John Browning's first gun. It covers EVERYTHING you will ever want to know about this rifle, and then some. It is a must for anyone interested in the history of John Browning, Winchester and the famous Model 1885 Single-Shot Rifle. The book is FULL of pictures, diagrams and information about the 1885, including every modification and improvement this rifle went through during its long years in production. It also gives unbelievable details about every customized option or version that the rifle was ever made into. So if you are interested in the Winchester Single-Shot and its history, this book is the one, of two, to read.
- This book has it all for the 1885 enthusiast, as well as for anyone who has an interest in John Browning, Winchester Repeating Arms, single shot rifles, and/or the beginnings of the modern gun industry here in America. Highly readable, with plenty of facts, figures, and illustrations. Well-edited, and excellent graphic presentation. A beautifully written, edited, and executed book, and one that you will read several times for the sheer enjoyment.
The quality of this book is a standard to which all others of its genre should be written to, but unfortunately too often aren't. I salute the author for a job truly well-done, and I unreservedly recommend this title to anyone who has even a remote interest in the subject matter; the cost of the book is money well-spent. The book is that good.

4 comments about The Book of Colt Firearms.
- If you have a serious interest in Colt firearms; be it as a collector, shooter, or just plain armchair aficionado, this book has no equal. What ever you want to find, you'll find here in all the detail possible. It is an outstanding work and should be on every "gun person's" shelf, within easy reach. You will find something new no matter how many times you open it.
- Always wondered where Colt quotes from when I call for models and years of manufacture and this is the book on the reference desk at Colt. R.L. Wilson went to colt to do all his research and is the Master of Colt information, he also has a website where you can order his books (even autographed and numbered) This book was originally [$$] and I have seen it go for as much as [$$$] and getting scarcer. I have found this book to be one of the most informative books ever written, the illustrations are tremondous also. I have also started to buy additional copies as a future investment. The book is one of the first books that company grabs for when they come over. Can't say enough about it.
Sgt. P. Jones
- The 91/2" X 121/4" X 13/4" hardcover Book describes all production firearms, variations, prototypes, experimentals and seldom seen engraved guns. Markings, barrel lengths, finishes and ammo are presented for easy reference. It presents thousands of facts in over 1,250,000 words and over 1,250 black and white and 67 color photos.
- This has got to be the foremost book ever written on Colt. It reads better than an episode of "A&E's Biography", yet in convenient book form! Great glossy stock on all pages, history, statistics, serial number ranges and identification, rare pictures, advertisements, TWELVE POUNDS of pure and permanent pleasure! Flayderman's has NOTHING on this man, Wilson! Well worth the $149.00.

3 comments about Standard Catalog of Winchester: The Most Comprehensive Price Guide Ever Published.
- If there is an interest in all manner of Winchester products, "Standard Catalog of Winchester" is an okay black and white price catalog of all sorts of items sold under the Winchester name. Even if you are not a Winchester collector, the contents are interesting to thumb through.
The firearms section is approximately 120 pages, which are virtually the same Winchester pages that appear in other Krause Publications such as "The Standard Catalog of Firearms" and "Fladerman's...", only expanded though the use of larger versions of the same pictures and illustrations. I only mention this duplication of content because, if you already have any of these other Krause publications, this book does not offer expanded or new information relating to firearms.
- An excelent book for any Winchester fan! I found stuff I had no idea Winchester had manufactured. Highly Recomended.
- This brand new, year 2000, 752 page softbound reference work contains everything you'll need and want to know about Winchester products. There are more than 90 very arge, sharp, full color photos and more than 2,500 great black and white photos. 2,500 major products are included and current values for more than 10,000 items. This is more than a picture-price guide. It's loaded with useful information for the Winchester enthusiast. Topics range from Winchester History, Firearms, Engraving, Cartridge Boxes, Shotshells to Reloading Tools and Supplies, Junior Rifle Corps, Pocket Knives, Fishing Equipment, Sports Items, Farm and Garden Tools, Axes, Carpentry Tools, Mechanic Tools, Kitchen and Household Appliances, Padlocks, Flashlights, and more and more. Wow !! There are even sections on Calendars, Posters, and Advertising and Trench Art. A Winchester enthusiast's dream come true. Items are easily located. I don't know what else could have been included in this book. Get it and enjoy, enjoy . . .

1 comments about Firearms of the American West 1866-1894.
- This is one of the best books on a rather broad subject matter. The authors have done a commendable job of covering the availability and use of firearms during one of the most dramatic times in American history. Not only do they document the use of major manufacturers products, they also cover the use and possession of lesser known products as well. This is a well written and entertaining compendium of information that is bound to go down in literature history as one of the great books on the subject it covers. I recommend this book if you have any interest in this subject. It is well worth the money spent!

5 comments about The Practical Pistol Manual: How to Use a Handgun for Self-Defense.
- The book is short and doesn't have much useful information on marksmanship. They talk about self-defense mostly, and I was looking for a book on how to improve my shooting ability, how to clean and maintain my firearms, and how to be safe. This book didn't help me much in that regard.
- This book is intended as a "minimum requirement reading" for new gun owners. The book fills the bill adequately, but the problem is that it handles the issues very superficially. The book addresses about all the important issues, but it does not give them the proper treatment.
On the other hand, because the book is very thin and fast to read, it more probable that a prospective gun owner has the patience to read through it, and it certainly is better to have read this book than having read no book at all. But the problem is that some persons (who are not into reading, anyway) may think that they have read "a book about shooting guns", and think that they don't need to study the subject any more. One has to wish that reading this book gives a beginner an stimulus to study the subject further.
- This book is a worthy read- very helpful for someone who has made the decision to protect themselves and others with a firearm.
On the issue of needing a permit to carry a concealed firearm or handgun, I am opposed wholeheartedly to that concept and practice. It is NOT constitutional to require it. It is, in point of fact, an illegal registry of gun owners and is scarcely distinguishable from a gun registry system. The second ammendment already guarantees the right of America's citizens to have guns in their posesion at all times without any interference from the government. The law as it exists in my state is so subjective that the mere whim of the attending police officer is what determines whether an individual is "breaking the law". I do not for one instant believe that registering gun owners stops any firearm related crime; e.g.: If a person is willing to commit a crime with a gun already, how on earth is forcing law abiding citizens obey a bogus law that demands they report that they MIGHT be carrying a concealed handgun going to stop them? Do they honestly think that just because it's illegal to carry a handgun unseen is of an concern of a brutal criminal? As I already stated, I ALREADY have a right to carry any firearm almost anywhere, at anytime; seen or unseen. How DARE my state government try to interfere with the exercising of that constitutionally guaranteed right! I eagerly await the day when someone, supported or not, by the NRA, fights a concealed firearm/handgun law all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States and will shout with joy at the instant that they strike it down the as unconstitutional threat to our freedom that it is!
- I was surprised to see how small this book was - I should have read the fine print! It worked out to around 70 pages, I think. The book is apparently drawn from the author's introduction-to-handguns classroom curriculum and is very light on content. The most informative handgun book I found by far was "The Concealed Handgun Manual" by Chris Bird.
- I strongly recommend this book for both beginner and veteran pistol shooters. Gun safety, how-to's on gun care and operation, shooting tips, self defense and legal issues are all addressed in an easy to understand manner. This book is perfect for teaching a newcomer the basics. It is a good reference for the experienced also.

5 comments about 100 Legendary Knives.
- The good news: great photos, excellent design. The bad news: absolutely atrocious writing. Pointless captions for every photo. The author states the obvious, gives a tiny bit of background info, raises questions he never answers, and finds a way to say "par excellence" to describe every other knife in this book. Reading this book is like standing next to a guy at a party who jabbers away for three hours and never says anything important. But the photos really are quite nice.
- This is an excellent book with wonderful illustrations and descriptions. It is not very technical but some of the knife terms used falls strangely on the Anglo ear! My only reserve about the book is that it is too biased towards French knives. Which I suppose is to be expected from a French author. But in this respect the title is slightly misleading. It should rather have read "100 Legendary French Knives - and a few others".
- If you have any interest in knives or collecting them You will find out exactly how good your taste in knives really is. This book has full page color pics and is a very easy read. You might find yourself buying knives you never heard of or smile when you see how many legendary knives you allready own. How good is your taste in knives?
- I always have such a hard time buying gifts for men, my father most of all. However, when I saw this book I knew it was for him. He is an avid knife collector, and this is the one thing I could get him that he wouldnt have ever thought of buying for himself. This book will be proudly displayed within all of his collection, and he can pick it up and flip through it anytime he chooses. Thanks
- Pacella's book 100 Legendary Knives contains excellent photos of exemplary knives of various types, albeit types arbitrarily chosen by him. The pics absolutely make the book worthwhile. However, because of Pacella's arbitrary choices of knives, some of the selected knives are not really "legendary" in any true degree, but simply an example of one of many types of knives. Various of the non-American bladesmiths and certainly most of the examples of French knife makers could have been replaced with more prominent names, most likely American. Of course, having arbitrarily named certain knives as legendary, like the Mississippi Gambler's knife, Pacella immediately opens himself to statements such as mine. It is good to remember that everybody's list of 100 legendary anything is up for discussion and disagreement. As well, the writing style at times creates ridiculous senses of things--"The various periods of prehistory succeeded each other, ..." What is "prehistory," that is, what exact time is before historical reckoning? And, yes, historical delineations of time are usually chronological and therefore do fall one after the other. The pics make the book, and it is well-worth the price only for the pics.
