3 comments about RUGER AND HIS GUNS: A History of the Man, the Company and Their Firearms.

  1. Gosh, this was a pleasant book to read. The only negative I recall was the lack of detailed information about all of the photographs scattered throughout the book. I admit I was hoping to read a little more about some of the business failures and reasons why some firearms did not go into production. However, we don't need to focus in on the negative when it comes to Mr. Ruger's wonderful life! Other than my desire to want a little more description about the photographs and business dealings, this was an absolutely wonderful book on Mr. Ruger.

  2. From the first Standard Auto, to Flatgate Single Six's, Flattop Blackhawks, Hawkeye's, Bearcat's, Model 77s, Redhawks, you name it, it is all in here. I love this book. It is the best book on Ruger firearms that you can buy.

  3. This book is perfect for anyone interested in the history of Sturm, Ruger and Co. The information is presented in a very organized fashion. I highly recommend this book at twice the price.

2 comments about Firearms Disassembly With Exploded Views.

  1. This book was panned by another reader, but compared to "The Gun Digest Book of Exploded Long Gun Drawings", this one is much better. Several of the Gun Digest book drawings are so poor as to be useless, a function of the quality of the original more than reproduction. For readers interested in an book with a lot of older firearms drawings, get a "Gun Parts Corp." catalog.

  2. This book covers a lot of territory, but a lot of the drawings are poorly reproduced, blurry even, and might not be suitable for disassembly/reassembly.

5 comments about The Official Overstreet Indian Arrowheads Identification and Price Guide 9th Edition (Official Overstreet Indian Arrowhead Identification and Price Guide).

  1. This guide continues it's tradition of being an excellent resource of current pricing and point identification. The pictures and identification of the points are worth the price alone.

  2. This is a complete reference and price guide for anyone interested in Indian Point design and collecting with current retail pricing. It contains good photographs of the known Indian Points. You will find page after page of photo's to compare your points to and assist you in point identification. If you only buy one book on Indian Point collecting this is "The Book" that every collector and dealer will recomend that you buy. Back editions contain articles that are always interesting reading so always keep your back editions in your collection.

3 comments about Collecting Antique Bird Decoys and Duck Calls: An Identification and Price Guide.

  1. This is one book that I never received, even after they charged my credit card, they would not respond to my emails, offer a refund, or even send me a replacement for the "one lost in the mail."

  2. A very well-researched book, this is definately one for the collector. This book's true value lies in its value guides and background information, making for facinating reading. Unfortunately, the photography is only average, and mostly black and white (there is a middle section of 63 colored pages).

  3. This is a great book. I've collected decoys for several years and I own the previous edition of Collecting Antique Bird Decoys and Duck Calls which is now some 10 years old. No disrespect, but the new edition by Russ Lewis far surpasses the old book. Not only will you find thousands of photos but Lewis, an avid collector himself, provides loads of information on traditonal carvers, factory birds, regional influences throughout North America and much more. The depth and breadth of the work is impressive. Lewis is a university professor, and you can tell that he is an educator at heart. It also helps that he has a soul of a collector. If you collect decoys, bird calls, or simply enjoy the outdoors you'll love this book. I'll bet my Red-breasted Merganser decoy on it.

5 comments about The Walther Handgun Story: A Collector's and Shooter's Guide.

  1. This is a rather well thought out book...IF you're a collector on the vintage pistols.
Although the photos could have been of a better brightness and contrast, they do serve to show a fairly comprehensive history of the Walther pistols. It would have been nice to see some movie and TV tie-ins to show how prevalent the Walther name has been on the large and small screens.
What I would take exception with is the way the P99 was handled. An updated edition is warranted and would serve to remedy this oversight. The same can be said for the Walther line of airguns, be they pellet or BB pistols.

Not a bad book, considering there is nothing else on the market that delves into the history and legacy of the Walther name in firearms.

  2. A good reference book. This book should have been better printed, and, the photographs and the drawings are of poor quality. There should have been more, and better quality, exploded drawings.

  3. I thought the book was pretty informative but some of the pictures were real dark therefore not being able to show complete detail and his serial numbering dates were a little vague

  4. This book offers a lot of info but however, it should be mentioned that the pictures are generally of a very poor quality as a result of which the distinguishing of (important !) details is hardly or not at all possible. The (few) drawings are of an even worse quality. Also the chapter covering the P88 and P99 models is inadequate (notably for the P99)and the subtitling of the pictures sometimes is completely wrong. Nevertheless this book has to be considered worth its price because, again, it offer lots of info (especially on prewar models)and it reads in an agreeable way.

1 comments about Luftwaffe Gravity Knife: A History And Analysis of the Flyer's And Paratrooper's Utility Knife.

  1. In 268 pages, this book provides a detailed study of the Luftwaffe Gravity knife from its early beginnings to some of the modern day variations of the knife. It is a quality hardback book printed on quality glossy paper with a Contents and Index and has some additional information in eight Appendicies. It provides some value comparisons in terms of what each knife type is worth (circa 2006) - a feature which has limited utility in 2008, especialy when prices for these knives has skyrocketed.

The book has a multitude of black and white pictures of the various knives and thier parts etc and includes pictures of airmen that shows how the knife was carried etc. Some of the pictures are not the best quality given their age.

Coverage of the gravity knife extends into modern era knives which is also interesting, but it doesn't extend into all of the modern day variations or to the Chinese knock-off versions of the gravity knife - an extra chapter on modern day knock-off gravity knives would have been an interesting addition.

The only real failing in the book is the poor coverage of the Ibberson gravity knife (an English made gravity that was copied from the first version German gravity knife) which doesn't even have a picture of the knife, although the author does provide a sketch of what the knife looked like. Coverage of the Ibberson knife is largely by way of already published material on that knife.

On balance, the Luftwaffe Gravity Knife book by Mack A. Pattarozzi is a very useful addition to the library of books for the knife collector, especially so for collectors who have German garvity knives in their collections.

2 comments about Know Your Ruger 10/22 (Know Your Gun Series).

  1. In this short easy to read book, the author discusses his experiences with collecting this popular firearm. He addresses the various variations seen, with specifics related to years and serial number ranges. His writing style is conversational as opposed to narrative. The graphics are adequate although color would've been more useful. For those looking for operator manual type information, this is not the book for you. If you are interested in collecting the 10/22, this is a good place to start.

  2. The content of the book is overly personalized to the author and contains little information useful to the average 10/22 shooter. The book reads as if the author is writing for himself rather than for the reader; the most commonly used word being "I". Collectors may find some valuable information though the presentation makes the book a below average and boring read. There is a copy of the original 10/22 patent, which is interesting, and some "blow up" shots showing the firearm parts and assembly in detail. These are the only pluses in the book but can be found in other 10/22 manuals which are much better written than this book. In short, if one is looking for a little history, and some collector information on the Ruger 10/22, this might be a book to consider. If one is a shooter looking for details on how to use, repair or modify this firearm, look elsewhere.
