2 comments about The Wearing of Costume: The Changing Techniques of Wearing Clothes and How to Move in Them, from Roman Britain to the Second World War.
- This book has some golden nuggets of very interesting info that you're not likely to find elsewhere (I found the info on how to carry oneself when wearing period clothing to be especially interesting) but the quality and thoroughness of the treatment seemed somewhat inconsistent to me.
- While it's not a book on creating costumes, or what exactly people wore, this should be in every reenactor's library.
Instructions on managing skirts, cloaks, corsets, swords, all of the facets of historical dress, do not come with the clothing, and aren't always instinctive for the modern person. Meant primarily for actors, this is still a handy little book to have around for those who just like to dress up.

1 comments about Costume of the Classical World (Costume Reference).
- This book is very well-suited for middle school students who need to find or make costumes for school projects or plays.
Almost every page has drawings and illustrations of period clothing, hair, head pieces, and shoes based on historical research. It covers a 3000 year span from Ancient Eqypt to the Late Roman Empire.
Separate chapters specifically describe costuming in Egypt, Ethiopia, Biblical dress, Babylon and Assyria, Persia and Media, Greece, Rome, Ancient Britain, and Roman Britain.
There is a very easy to follow set of drawings that show how a Doric chiton (the mantle worn by Ancient Greeks) can easily be made by folding cloth and pinning in a few spots.
I found this book very useful and engaging for my middle school language arts and drama students, who used it as a resource in completing interdisciplinary history/language arts projects, costumes for plays, and costume design projects.

3 comments about Shoes and Pattens: Finds from Medieval Excavations in London (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London).
- This book does an EXCELLENT job of covering all the information that you'd want about shoes, there patterns, and all the data from the early 12th to 15th century. I give it four stars ONLY because I'd hoped for some 9th and 10th century information, otherwise, it's a 5-star. Find a shoe you need and enlarge it to your size, cut, and sew!!
- Shoes and Pattens is one of THE two great books using actual finds to show footwear in the English Middle Ages. A must have for anyone who is interesed in recreating period footwear or simply knowing about leather uses.
The second book is Stepping Through Time (David Brown Books) which follows footwear found in Holland dating from pre-history to 1800.
- Shoes And Patterns is an in-depth archaeological study of medieval footwear, made possible by preserved footwear of the 12th through 15th century discovered along the north bank of the river Thames and permanently housed in the collection of the Museum of London. The detailed and informative text is enhanced throughout this impressive work of archaeological and historical scholarship with numerous black-and-white photographs and drawings which make the shoes of centuries ago as real and practical as if they were worn today. An essential addition to academic Medieval History studies reference collections, Shoes And Patterns is particularly recommended reading for theatrical costumers, replica-makers, historical reenactors and anyone with a festive curiosity about this down-to-earth topic of medieval footwear.
