3 comments about From Queen to Empress: Victorian Dress, 1837-1877 : An Exhibition at the Costume Institute December 15, 1988-April 16, 1989.
- This books description in the amazon catalogue listing lists its page count as 320 pages. It is in fact only 90 or so and has only a couple of dozen colour photos of original gowns. Short chapters, uninspiring as a reference book. Im still glad I have it as it does display a few gowns once belonging to Queen Victoria herself, However given the title of the book, I also assumed they all were (a good number of the gowns were American). No accessories, no multiple examples in the same category. If this was the catalogue of the exhibition, it would have been a short visit.
- This book is a little-known gem for civil war reenactors striving to get their clothing "right" or Victoria officianadoes who wish to have a record of some of her clothing. The photos are clear and mostly in color. The clothing is in excellent condition and emits sighs from those wishing to grab into the pictures and wear those lovely items. The book has a nice variety of items and clear descriptions. A wonderful book for a gift to that budding clothing historian or costumer.
- This book is an exhibition catalogue from the metropolitan museum of art. It covers Victorian women's dress from the years 1837 to 1877 when Queen Victoria gradually changed from being simply Queen of England to Empress of a vast empire.
The book is richly illustrated with colour photos of Queen Victoria's clothes (or other period costume examples of the right date) starting with a dress worn by Victoria for her state entry into Paris in 1855. We are also shown examples of wonderful English silk paisley style shawls and formal court dress. The text accompanying the pictures gives a vivid narrative of the changing styles in the 40 years of fashion this book covers. "From Queen to Empress" is a worth addition to any collection of books on costume or if you are wanting to know more about the fashions of the mid Victorian era.

2 comments about Childrenswear Design.
- I was looking for books on drafting patterns for children's clothes and this book looked promising. The book is from former instructors at FIT, after all.
This book doesn't talk about drafting basic bodices, it does have a sleeve, pants and skirt draft, though.
Instead it shows how to drape a bodice on a child's dress form. I can't afford a woman's dress form, let alone a child's. No child is going to stand still, especially if they are just learning to walk, like mine is. It is hard enough to get my husband to stand still while I drape him.
The measurement charts in the back were interesting to me though.
The Metric/Imperial conversion chart was also useful.
Over all I was very disappointed.
- This book is a basic instruction in the construction of childrenswear. It includes infant layette, boyswear, girlswear, how to find trims,& how to drape basic bodies to make a sloper. It gives directions on how to flat pattern jackets, pajamas, sleepers, skirts, pants and hoods. I am a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in childrenswear and this is the textbook we use in our class. It was written by two professors who once directed the childrenswear department and have seince retired. The most helpful thing about this book is the tables in the back which give the measurements of the adverage infant, 2t - 4t, 6x, and 7 - 14. These tables can help you if you are flat patterning a very difficult garment and you must know, for example, what the neck to arm measurment is on the adverage 10 year old boy. The instructions are easy to follow, however, would be even easier to follow if they were numbered and the diagrams were labeled. You must bring your own creativity to this book because it just shows you the basics, nothing fancy. Overall I would say it was very helpful in my courses.

3 comments about Peter Lindbergh: Selected Works 1996-1998 (Portfolio (Assouline)).
- In this book you can find the images from the fashion magazines like Vogue (USA & Italian) and W magazine. He has photographed Milla Jovovitch, Amber Valetta, Shalom Harlow, Karen Elson, Esther Canadas and husband Mark van der Loo and many more. It's a very nice book, but if you have saved your old copies of the magazines mentioned above, you allready own the book!
- Lindbergh is one of the best photographers in the world. all his books are fabulous.
- I enjoy this collection of Lindbergh's most recent work because of its reality-based imagery, as opposed to plastic fashion photography being done now. I have each of his books and follow the evolution of his work. Here, it seems to have been stripped of as much excess artifice as possible. He eschews the "rules" governing much of today's celebrity-driven fashion imagery. The pictures exude glamour while suggesting a reality and vulnerability of their subjects. I appreciate this book as a telling document of our present time (1990s), and think it is collector-quality.

2 comments about Tiffany Jewels.
- I received this item as a gift and *loved* it. The pictures and layout are beautiful. However, I would like there to have been more content around the items.
- The best thing about this book is definitely the pictures. If you love jewelry, this book is for you! Tiffany & Co. is one of the world's most famous jewelry stores, and this book does justice to their legendary status. The accompanying captions and articles left a little to desire, but the photographs made up for it. A must have for any jewel maven.
