2 comments about Russell's Standard Fashions 1915-1919.
- Not only does it give you fantastic pictures, it does things like show you all the possible hem lines for a single dress, or describe the undergarments you can't quite see.
It's wonderful!
- This is one of the books I reach for time and time again. The fashions are stylish but not out of the realm of possibility for the average woman of the time. I also love the narrow, four year time frame--the book really gives you a great overview of the move away from the fussier victorian styles to the more streamlined precusors of the 1920s tunics. I've gotten a lot of ideas for sewing out of this book and the illustrations are charming. Five stars overall!

1 comments about Flowers of Silk & Gold: 4 Centuries of Ottoman Embroidery.
- If you're interested in the what and how of Ottoman embroidery, this is a good place to start. In addition to cultural and historical background, the book gives information on how the pieces were made, to what uses they were put, and influences on design and style. It's well illustrated throughout with not only photos of extant needlework, but on Ottoman style and culture. Many of the embroidery photos are detailed enough to see individual stitches.
The main chapters/sections are
A Brief History of the Ottoman Empire
Makers and Methods
Designs and Functions
Glossary
Catalog
Catalog has color photos and detailed information for 56 pieces from the 17th-19th centuries with a few pieces from the 20th. Includes info on stitches, technique, and thread count and spin of the ground fabric.
There is also a very good bibliography for those wishing to dig deeper. Another good book you might like is Ottoman Embroidery by Ellis and Wearden (NOT the one with the same title by Taylor).

5 comments about Modelmania: The Working Model's Manual.
- The writer is a complete idiot. He is nothing more than a headshot photographer (and not a particularly talented one at that), and writes at a first-grade level.
This book is worthless trash.
- This book has lots of information and is practical with lots of tips that can actually be used. The way it was written however, I can't determine if Karl Preston is arrogant or just that wise cracking.
- How many more modeling books is Eileen Ford going to 'endorse?' When will a writer give young people starting out in the industry some straight talk about where they best fit into the industry and how to make the most of their talents and reach their full potential? This book conveniently sidesteps the BIG CHANGES in the Industry over the last five-seven years. GET REAL PLEASE.
- Get this book! It is a wonderful introduction to the field of modelling and commercial acting. The information is accurate and insightful. The book turns wannabes into informed, prepared competitors! As an adult male, I find the book particularly helpful, as it is not pitched toward pre-teenage girls like many other excellent books. The step by step approaches to getting photos, contacting agents, going to go-sees and auditions, were great. I am now with a great agency, have booked both print and TV commercial work (as a SAG principal, no less...), and am pursuing acting as well. This book has prepared me well and I highly recommend it.
- The author's title (photographer) leads the reader to believe that he is an expert in the field. In fact, there's a lot of misinformation in this book. Buyer beware.

3 comments about Victoria: The Romance of Hats.
- "The Romance of Hats" is excellent eye candy. I keep borrowing it from the library; I really must buy it so I can forget about due dates. It has no millinery instruction. It's full of photographs, not drawings, except for little impressionist masterpieces here and there. It's mercifully free of novelty hats. Look elsewhere if you want pictures of hats that look like historical buildings, vegetation, musical instruments or what-have-you.
I love the selections of hats in this book. Classics, they tend towards the old fashioned, but made by contemporary milliners with materials available today, which I find inspiring. Just the pictures of what can be done to dress a hat with a swath of ribbon, lace or dried flowers is enough to make you want to do that right now.
It's a great book for flipping through, over and over again, for you and your friends and visitors.
- This small volume profiles 4 modern milliners and includes some nice photographs and little textual ditties on women's hats. A nice little book for the bathroom side table (better than those stupid joke books).
- "The Romance of Hats" is a beautifully illustrated book extolling hats, their makers, and those who wear them. I enjoy looking through this book for ideas or just to relax.
