1 comments about Desert Designs: 26 Knits by Aboriginal Artists.

  1. The patterns in this book are distinctly Aboriginal, and may have limited appeal in other parts of the world. What is especially appealing about this book is its direct ties to Aboriginal art and story-telling. Knitting designs are presented with an example of the art which inspired the design, and a brief aboriginal tale about the subject of the design (followed by a brief explanation). This is the charm of the book, much as in "Folk Socks", "Folk Shawls", etc.

The knitter who is interested in creating her own designs could use this book as a springboard for incorporating other primitive art into her knitting.

One would need to be experienced in intarsia knitting to execute the patterns, as this is not a "how-to" book.

It's a fun read, an interesting peek into another culture, and a creative "nudge" to move beyond the traditional northern-European motifs.

  1. Has complete, step by step instructions for making doll dresses, party dresses and nightgowns.. for girl dolls ranging in size from about 15 inches to 23 inches. Teaches how to easily fit the clothes and explains that body measurements are more important than height. I bought this book to make one dress and I am now on my fifth outfit...

2 comments about Crochet Style.

  1. I love this book! I have crocheted since I was 14, back when nearly all patterns were for granny squares and table cloths. Crochet is often considered the step-child of knitting, and the craft and yarn companies treat it accordingly. Most "fashion" patterns for crochet are too open, not practical to actually wear. Sally Harding is one of the first to design a collection for crochet using stitches and patterns such as plaids, stripes, colorblocking, and cabling in wearable crochet "art". She also designs in Tunusian or "afghan" stitch for fair-isle and intarsia type sweaters. Although published in 1987, the designs are classic enough to be relevant for today.

The book is not for beginners, however. There is an appendix with illustrated stitch diagrams and basic technique for particular patterns. To make the best use of the designs you really need a thorough foundation in the basics, which this book doesn't provide. The instructions are well written in imperial measurements(there is no conversion chart for metric).
While some of the yarns used may be discontinued, a photograph of the yarns (and the gauge for each project)will help you to substitute with available materials.

I highly recommend this book if you can get it; a forerunner in crochet design. In addition, I recommend Crochet With Style by Melissa Leapman, another designer who understands the dedication of crocheters.

  2. I own this book already and it is a favorite of mine. It is all fashion-oriented and includes sweaters, jackets, vests and summer tops. If you want to crochet fashion items that don't look like afghans, try to get this one!

2 comments about Visionaire # 33 : Touch.

  1. Information correction. The 20 cards are not only from Fendi, they also contain Dior, Chanel, GUCCI, Prada...etc. You will like it very much.

  2. I started collecting visionaire two years ago, I think #33, Touch, is the best issue throughout these two years. (It is even better than LV #30). The brushed golden metal box is shiny and grand. There are 20 Fendi 2000/2001 fashion desigen collection image cards, every card is produced by different printing techniques, for instance, foil-stamping, sculpt-embossing, 3D...etc, It is creative and beautiful. A wearable pony skin scarf is used for packing the 20 cards in order to put them inside the golden metal box. This scarf is definitely the image of Fendi fashion style. Both scarf, golden box and image card are very match in colour and style. It is a perfect art design except it is a little bit expensive. (Actually, I really hope to cancel half star of the 5 I rated above because of the higher price) However, I still don't know how to wear the scarf. Anyway, if you like collecting beautiful creative design product and you can afford, buy it. I think you will like it because it is a full marks-5 star product.
