1 comments about Fashion Images.

  1. I picked this one up used, for nearly nothing. Written for Fashion Students, this text is clear and simple, and teaches the reader how to translate their fashion imaginings into coherent drawings. Excellent for experienced sewers interested in learning to design their own fashions for the ground up, and any student/afficionado of fashion not already comfortable representing the human figure.

1 comments about Music: Dolce & Gabbana.

  1. If you have Hollywood by Dolce & Gabbana, it's very similar. Pictures of musicians from magazines, concerts, and red carpet adorned in D&G. Pictures are ok, a lot of the same artists, however, could use more of a variety.

2 comments about Kids Plus Modeling Equal Money: How to Help Your Children Succeed in Modeling (Spectrum Book).

  1. I'm tired of this idea that parents should be encouraged exploit their own kids for money! This book teaches you how to brainwash your little one to think what that want is what you want (basically, money and fame). Who cares what the child actually wants?

The book teaches you that success in life is measured in fame and dollars. The title alone says it all: "Kids Plus Modeling Equal Money". Basically, the point that is made is that since you already have a kid, why not get your money's worth?

Even though it is proven that most kid celebrities whom are pushed too hard too young usually end up depressed and into hard-partying and drugs and alcohol, many parents are still convinced that fame plus fortune equals happiness. IT DOES NOT!

  2. Despite the rather offputting title, this book is actually pretty good and informative. It doesn't contain pictures, but it does take a rather unique approach from a parents perspective covering things such as managing expenses that seems very useful and could save lots of hassle and mistakes. Covers a wide range of topics and contains lots of information.

5 comments about Victorian and Edwardian Fashions for Women 1840 to 1919 (A Schiffer Book for Collectors With Value Guide).

  1. This is not a good book for the beginning costumer (who is, unfortunately, the intended audience). There are some wonderful clothes pictured--the variety of styles and types of clothing is helpful, as are the close-ups of embroidery and other trim. But, some items (both old photos and clothes) are misdated. While in most cases the error is only by a few years, two pieces are incorrectly dated by a decade or more. As a museum professional, I was also distressed by the wearing of antique clothing while also discussing methods of preservation. Museum associations, The Costume Society of America, and most vintage clothing collectors do NOT endorse wearing original garments. Someone with a solid background in costume history will still find this book a useful addition, but I would not recommend it as the first or only resource.

  2. Unlike fashion plates, these are authen6ic fashoins shown much as they would show in period photographs.

  3. Unlike fashion plates, these are authen6ic fashoins shown much as they would show in period photographs.

  4. The author's goal to present original garments as would be worn on actual persons unfortunately fails. This is due to incorrect undergarments worn -- which therefor does not correctly show how the garment was to fit -- and wasn't this the point of the book according to the author's comments? In many circumstances clothing simply did not fit the wearer (blantent missue for original surviving garments). Garments were draped with the backs obviously left gaping open, or skirts dragging on the ground. It would have been much better to display the garments on well-fitted dress forms (available in museum supply catalogs) with correct support garments if the author was serious about showing fit. Although the photos are "pretty", this certainly does not contain academic information.

  5. The author contacted a local theater with a vintage clothing collection, gathered some pretty friends (who look very pleased to be in a book), and photographed them wearing the clothes. The text reads like a summary of any well-known history of costume, complete with familiar quotes from original sources, with the addition of chapter titles like "Whoops for Hoops" (1850s styles). Buy this book if you want to see pictures of vintage clothes, but don't take it too seriously.

5 comments about The Business Card Book: What Your Business Card Reveals About You-- And How to Fix It.

  1. I would have given this book 5 stars, however, it takes some time for the information to set in properly in ones mind before getting around to making a good business card that stands out. To many business cards today are too information heavy and need more white space. I saw several examples of good quality business cards (Moonstruck Choclatiers just being one of them) and other ok models. Digesting all the information presented takes time, however, if you are needing to make your own business card and stationary because you cannot afford a professional designer, this book is for you. Making your business card work for you should be your number one focus.

  2. Anyone who has a business card of any kind can profit enormously from this book. Its a thick volume, but don't let that decieve you -- its actually a very quick read. Ms. Grant makes every page fly by with well-reasoned suggestions and literally hundreds of illustrated examples. Considering what an effective business card can mean to you, you'd be crazy to miss the information here. If you think your current business card is beyond improvement, read this book anyway -- for the price of a paperback, you can turn your business card into a better sales tool.

  3. Nearly 500 valuable pages of detailed information on the littlest billboard; your business card. What a treasure trove! I learned things about business cards that I'd never thought of before. Tons of great ideas. You must read this book BEFORE you design or redesign your business card.

  4. I have just finished reading "The Business Card Book" - some of it more than once. I found the book to be very informative and suprisingly very interesting. It's very unusual to find a topic that appears to be so mundane, such as a business card, brought to life in such a masterful way.

Very enjoyable reading! I recommend the book to all of my friends.

  5. This is a great book if you need to design a card, or want to update your card. All the information you need to create a card is here, but the book is in severe need of editing. At 480+ pages, it is far too long, and often diverges into completely new territory like how to handle a trade show. There is even a huge section on a little boy's battle with cancer. While I am all for charity (it's my business) I found this section very distracting in the book. Much of the book is repetitive also, and disconnected (How does "Jazz Up Company Cards" on page 337 follow from Identifying Yourself At A Meeting and Your Self-Inrtoduction on Page 336??) While the author warns against racial or ethnic blunders, she commits a huge one herself in describing a Scottish Telegraph game, which takes a swipe at Scottish people. The Pros? Has lots of information, lots of examples of business cards (though none in color oddly enough), a fantastic reference guide at the back of the book, with all kinds of useful information, a glossary which I found most helpful. My favorite section is on conducting business and presenting your card to foreigners.Grant also has a relaxed, friendly style of writing. The Cons: poorly organized, poorly edited, too long. I would like to see the book only half that size, with color examples. Grant writes some terrific text about other aspects of business (sales meetings, trade shows) but they belong in another book, not here. I do hope she keeps on writing, but more concisely, as she recommends herself for business!

  1. Fab coffee table book. Not recommended for coffee tables accessible to children.I purchased this as a house warming gift for a bachelor friend of mine. He loved it!

  2. I've been trying to buy this book for over a year now and you people keep canceling the purchase.

  3. I just want to second what one reviewer wrote. I was looking very much forward to receiving this book. I placed my order back in July, it's now Nov. and I still haven't received this book. No reason given, Amazon just kept moving the shipping date further and further back until I had finally had enough and canceled my order. Amazon can forget about me using them for any of my holiday shopping this year! If I did no one in my family would get there gifts until May!

  4. This is probably a very beautiful book, I have other books by Argentini that are awsome as well. This is more a comment on Amazon. I normally love to order stuff from Amazon, but I've been waiting over a month and a half for this book to be delivered. Every time the date gets close it's pushed back by another few weeks, or month. There is really no consideraion for you as a customer from Amazon. No discounted shipping, no half-off next order. NOTHING!!! I'm very disappointed in Amazon and this order.

  5. I love this book, awesome photographs, beautiful models, great work by the photographer. The book is of good size and lots of full page pictures.
