4 comments about How to Airbrush T-Shirts and Other Clothing.
- Out of all the books on this subject this was the best.detailed & very helpfull.
- I checked out about 40 airbrush books from the library and this book was by far the best of them all. I was excited about this book from the moment I opened it. It gives an understanding of the art through step by step instructions, techniques, and stokes. The prodjects can be easily accomplished with a little practice and time. After gaining an understanding of simple of strokes and airbrush control, you can make some great T-shirts! This book is PERFECT for the begining airbrush artist. If you have an interest in airbrushing, this is the perfect book to find out what it's all about.
- This book is one of the poorest examples of a step-by-step book I've seen. I happen to be one of the artists included in the portfolio section of the book. The artist who wrote the book is a pen and ink cartoonist, and obviously knows little about the use of an airbrush. The pictures of his work are laughable, and the text is cryptic and confusing, containing much misinformation. The only reason to buy this book is for the portfolio section, which contains many pictures of high quality t-shirt artwork. I am embarassed to have my artwork in such a book.
- Have you ever flipped through a airbrush book or been to the Airbrush T-shirt shop and thought how amazingly talented these artists must be. Well I have. I always wondered how much talent and decades of experience these people been through to create such amazing images. This book is excellent for anyone. From the person that sketches pictures in their notebook during a boring lecture to the person who wished he/she can draw like that guy. I am the guy who wished he could draw. This book teaches the basic rules you need to know to start airbrushing in a simple step-by-step manner and includes descriptive color illustrations. It is possible to become a airbrush artist and this book is a great way to start you off. It's easier than you think. All you have to do is follow the simple rules and have the patience and time to practice. Kai Chen

5 comments about Hollywood Knits: Thirty Original Suss Designs.
- THANKFULLY i got this from the library. i didn't cough up my own hard earned, non celebrity endorsed cash to pay for suss cousins' gloating.
only two things i'd make in this book and both are cardigans. sadly, neither goes over a 36 inch chest and i'm a 44. there'd be major adjusting on my part to get them to fit and not look like i'm wearing a sweater from the juniors' department of Kohl's.
that being said, you can buy most of this stuff AT Kohl's.
it makes me sad that this Swedish woman comes from a region of the world that does AWESOME things with knitting (i say this with confidence since i learned to knit in Finland).
bottom line, don't bother. find it online for free.
***on a side note, one reviewer mentioned that she doesn't like to borrow stuff from the library and photocopy. since knitting patterns and the such fall under the category of BEING ALLOWED to be photocopied (as long as it's for personal use and not mass production, including giving copies to your friends), i borrow things from the library, photocopy, make it, and THEN decide if i want to plunk down $20-35 for a book. saves me money in the long run from buying badly written books and wasting more yarn than i need to.***
- I love this book because the designs are simple and allow the new fabulous yarn to shine. You don't have to knit very complicated patterns to make very stylish garments and this is one of the best books I have seen to make this statement. I have also ordered some of her yarn and it is wonderful.
- The patterns are all so simplistic that it seems to imply that Hollywood types are all ADD-afflicted. There is a difference between a simple, timeless pattern that lets the beauty of the yarn shine, and a crude, poorly written one. Unfortunately the patterns of this book falls into the latter category.
Too bad that I gave one of the patterns, the leather tie cardigan, the benefit of the doubt and started knitting it. The instructions omitted several rows at the top of the sleeve so that the finished piece measures 13" rather than the specified 17"! I looked for corrections on her website. Even on the corrections page, this glaring error was not corrected. How poorly written and edited can a book get?!
The copy I use is a library copy. Even then, it is not worth the investment of my time.
- I initially bought Suss Cousin's "Hollywood Knits:Style" and then purchased this, her first book. I was attracted to both of the books patterns and color combinations. The patterns are organized by difficulty level and the 'Cinchy for Starters' patterns really are quite easy to finish while the 'Hot Knitters' patterns definitely require more experience. I think my one of my favorites in this particular book is the Knit Knitting Bag...It's very fun and funky. Okay...so the reasons I only rated it three stars...
I find the commentary and captions for the photos a bit self-aggrandizing for the author. After reading how she came up with this or that pattern for this or that actor or film got old after about the fifth reference. Also, the yarns she utilizes and recommends are, of course, ALL Suss yarns and there is no yarn weight indicated should you not want to use Suss yarns. Finally, there are fantastic knitting books coming out seemingly daily with similar patterns plus some really innovative patterns included that make a lot of the patterns in this book appear kind of commonplace. Overall, I gave it three stars...I like it alot but, the more I progress in my own knitting experience, the more I find myself searching for other sources of inspiration.
- Incessent name dropping and unoriginal patterns loaded with mistake after mistake that only be made using "suss" yarn -- give me a break...don't bother with this one and save your money.

2 comments about Vivienne Westwood: Fashion, Perversity, and the Sixties Laid Bare.
- A total page-turner with seamy details-- for example, she sent her son away to boarding school at a tender age because he got on (self-obsessed jackass) Malcolm McLauren's nerves. Even if you have no interest in her as a designer, this book is one fascinating read!
- This book made me a fan of this writer, he has a totally original approach to biography writing. It is achingly funny and in some bits brilliantly insightful, in others it moves you along like a very peculiar adventure story, which is just what Mrs Westwoods life was like after all. I read that her brother threatened to punch Mr Vermorel on the nose over this book which says it all since this book is a punch on the nose for all those sycophants that are always surrounding the lady. In an interview I also read he said he write it to annoy the Guardian. I got more knowledge that seemed more real about the 60s here than all the clichés that usually are served up. Seems the only thing that swung in those legendary days was Mick Jaggers jockstrap!!!

2 comments about Fragrance: The Story of Perfume from Cleopatra to Chanel.
- The information presented in this book is amazing in its scope and depth. Histories of anything usually leave me bored, but I was thoroughly impressed by the unusual yet thorough way Morris presented the information. It is not intended to be a how-to manual. The word history in the title should tell you that. If you just want to know how to make perfume, soap, candles, etc. and don't want to be knowledgeable about your product then this is not for you. Personally, I found it fascinating.
- I rented this book out from the library hoping to learn more about the steps taken to create a fragrance. Unfortunately, the information there is sparse compared to the amount of time the author spends on the history of fragrance. The chapter on essential oils is excellent and provides a nice introduction. The section on the business of fragrance is paltry. The author writes well and the information is straightforward.
