4 comments about Antique Purses: A History, Identification and Value Guide.

  1. The photography is excellent and the purses shown in this book are beautiful, but it is utterly useless for anyone who wants any information beyond price range and the dimensions of the bags. There is no information whatsoever on dates, what the different types of bags are called, where they're from, etc. There's a short introduction, but it doesn't compensate for the lack of information throughout the rest of the book. This might be fun for a collector to look through, but has little educational value.

  2. I don't know much about the value part but the pictures are very beautiful. Of course to me a beaded bag is priceless !!!

  3. The pictures are very good if that's all you want. The history is minimal and primarily on Whiting-Davis bags. I was very disappointed in the content as there is no information on why some bags are valued higher, what to look for in purchasing antique bags, and how to identify the era. I guess I just expected more text than was given.

  4. The book is primarily pictorial with values given for the individual bags shown. Two pages of history in general were included. Expansion of the background information would make the book more enjoyable. Obviously the values are outdated for 1999 but a wide range of bags are included.

1 comments about Visionaires Fashion 2000: Designers at the Turn of the Millennium.

  1. Once again, another Stephen Gan masterpiece! Visionnaire 2000 works as a wondrous visual delight for anyone who adores the fashion world, art, and design in general. The format (text and visuals) is neat and appealing, and the photography memorable. As a sort of modern-day encyclopedia of fashion's most eccentric and notable renegades, this colorful documentary is both inspirational and entertaining.

1 comments about Fighting for the Union Label: The Women's Garment Industry and the Ilgwu in Pennsylvania.

  1. My mother worked in the garment industry in PA her entire life and this book tells me the story of how that happened. My mom was a staunch supporter of the ILGWU and now I know why. I highly recommend this book to anyone who had family that worked in the early days of unionization. It's a wonderful depiction of some very courageous women and men.

5 comments about 10 Years of Dolce & Gabbana.

  1. how can i review this book when i ordered it last june 9 on an overnight delivery and now it's a month later and i still have not seen a cover or a page of this book...this is the first time i've used amazon.com and frankly i am disappointed coz i've heard such good things about shopping online specially with amazon.com....so consider this a review of amazon.com...they do not deliver...therefore on a scale of 1 - 5 stars...a dismal 1

  2. Utilizing their fascination for traditional rural fashions, the designing dream team of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana has captured the fashion world by storm. Since their company's inception in 1982 to the present, Dolce & Gabbana has made Italian fashion look so wearable.

This book, which celebrates their first 10 years in business, is a collection of past ad campaigns and a plethora of celebrities that normally would make a coffee-table book about fashion appealing. With a foreword by Isabella Rossellini, and appearances by many top name fashion models, Dolce & Gabbana's vision of incorporating Sicilian (Dolce is orginally from Palermo, Sicily) & rural styles is genius. Their tribute to Madonna, who gave them the brand-name notoriety they deserve, is great (Dolce & Gabbana got big press for designing the outfits for Madonna's "Girlie Show" tour). Their recent work with Whitney Houston on her world tour was also spectaclar as these gentleman know how to make a woman look and feel like one.

I am so happy that Dolce & Gabanna, wo are my all-time favorite designers have been in the fashion business for over a decade already. I hope to see a followup of this book very soon, whenever they reach their 20th anniversary. An excellent tribute to a talented duo.

  4. Great pictures of famous people in their D&G clothes. Advertisements with Linda Evangelista (great!) and Madonna, Demi Moore and many others. A must have!

  5. I consider Dolce & Gabbana to be among the very best designers of our time- very much in the same class as the late Gianni Versace, a fellow Italian designer.

The photography in this book is very, very good most of the time. My favorite pictures are from a Fall 1995 ad campaign that featured my favorite, Linda Evangelista. Here she is, with her trademark Sassoon angled bob, one of her best looks ever. Another favorite set are of Nadja Auermann and Kate Moss, from a 1992 campaign. So over the top!

Also included are some celebrities, like Demi Moore and Madonna, who had D&G design her Girlie Show costumes.

You don't have to be a fashionista to appreciate this folio. I think this book would look great on ANYONE's coffee table.

  1. I saw the movie before I purchased the book. I really enjoyed the movie and I had to buy the book to make the comparison. While I found them to be quite different I really enjoyed both in their places. The book was scattered at times but always honest. You really get a sense that you are hearing about Dito's life with out a filter, the flaws as well as the triumphs. I would recommend this book to anyone between 16 and 60 (especially if you've ever lived in New York).

  2. There are stretches of this book that sound like the writer is
channeling Jack Kerouac. In fact, sometimes the channeling is so
faithful that you could even mistake it for plagiarism. But this really
isn't anything like The Dharma Bums (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition). Instead it's more a narcissistic, disjointed story
of a borderline sociopath (who may or may not be the author).
The key is in the beginning pages when the author describes his hero's
adventures in Astoria. It's a record of meanness and violence that has
its echoes through the rest of the book.
The movie, I'm told, has some promise, but you could do better to skip this little piece of drivel and try On The Road by Jack Kerouac Poster by Len Deighton, 24" x 34" instead.

  3. I really liked the movie version of "Saints" for its gutsy portrayal of Dito's experience coming of age in Astoria. Unfortunately, the screenplay is far superior to the book. The book starts with Dito's early years but merely skims the surface and proceeds to a disjointed, sprawling narrative about Dito's adventures (mostly drunken or drug addled) as a punk rocker. He drops a lot of names but the story never goes anywhere. It sounds like he dictated this into a tape recorder and had someone transcribe his musings. And I'm not convinced he didn't make a few things up along the way. And, by the way, Yogaville is not close to either Farmville or Richmond and Raleigh, North Carolina is not a small town (if you read the book you'll understand the references). There's really no point to this book and after a while his stories are pretty tedious.

  4. I just finished watching the movie.I got goosebumps.
I grew up in the neighborhood and moved out to Long Island about 6yrs ago.
I went to Immaculate Conception Grammar school and graduated in 86'
Dito captured Astoria down to the very minute detail

Too bad they didnt show Father Angelo in the movie. He was the best !

I hope the movie gets some awards, it was eerie watching your childhood caputured in such astounding detail by such a fine writer.

  5. Really enjoyed the book...........not to mention Dito was a neighbor of mine in Astoria.....

5 comments about Business Casual Made Easy.

  1. This book is wonderful! It tells you, and than shows you, the various levels of business casual. Next it shows you how to combine items for a cohesive look and than it gives you a list to shop from. It does it for both women and men.

I borrowed it from the library and it was so good I decided I needed to buy one of the rather pricey used books since you can't buy it new at the moment.

  2. With its easy to understand hierarchy of "classic," "smart," and "relaxed" levels of dress and illustrated examples, Ilene Amiel's guide to business casual would be a handy tool for many workers. What makes it an essential reference for managers and HR directors is the fact that these recommendations are empirically based. Acceptability matches and suggestions were drafted from surveys of insdustry leaders in a variety of fields, suggesting that this book is more than a mere attempt to pawn off personal style on the masses. While the majority of the businesses that made up the original sample were American, and the survey results are now a bit dated; most pointers will hold true both across cultures and for a long time to come: e.g., it will always be a good idea to scan your appointment book before selecting your wardrobe for the day. Dressing for the day's activities is always going to be "in style."

  3. This is an excellent book! I found it very useful. It gives detailed guidelines for different levels of "casual". Most importantly, it shows how to put together a basic wardrobe, then mix and match the pieces. Everyone can use that information, not just those in the business world! Highly recommended.

  4. In other words, dress like a slob! A foolish book that attempts to apologize for and defend the "causal" look.

  5. I would recommend this book to all HR managers and those who write policies. When it comes to dress code you have to spell it out. This book helps you do that and help define what dress code is good for your environment. Its a great reference!
