3 comments about Messengers Style.

  1. I had hoped for a collection of pictures of bike messengers from around the United States. Instead, judging by the pictures, the authors decided to only include messengers from the New York City area. NYC messengers have a reputation for being among the best in the world, so I wasn't too disappointed. I would have liked to have seen pics of messengers from Chicago, San Francisco, DC, etc. included as well.

The book gives a good glimpse of NYC messenger style, despite it being only 100 pages thick. If the author had wanted to, he could have sought pictures of messengers from around the USA to include, making for a longer book and, perhaps, a wider variety of styles.

The subjects included in the book have been messengers for various periods of time, ranging from a few months to a couple of decades. So, rookies are included, along with veteran messengers.

The photos were well done and shot by obvious professionals in a studio, rather than having been taken out on the streets where the messengers really work and I felt the photos to be a little too posed-looking. I think pics of the messengers actually out on the streets would have provided a better, more honest, book. I had the feeling that Messenger Syle looked more like a clothing catalog, rather than a real pictorial of bike messengers.

I bought the book out of curiousity and I skim-through it, once in awhile when I'm bored. Overall, I liked the book, despite what I felt its shortcomings to be.

If you want to take a look at NYC bike messengers, this book gives a good glimpse. Don't expect too much, though.

  2. The photographs in this book are amazing...this is one of the coolest books on street style to come out in a long time. The cover and packaging are kinda funky too (it comes with this rubber belly band). If you live in New York, there's a good chance you'll recognise one of these whacky looking messengers. Original.

  3. you've honked at those crazy mthrfkrs weaving through traffic with bags of cargo and walkie talkies--but you've never asked yourself if they can write poetry; or if they represent the last stand of american fashion--postpunk primitive mad max though it may be. if you live in the sticks, buy this book and pretend you see bicycle messengers all the time. if you're the city mouse, quit your worthless job and get yerself 2 wheels.

3 comments about Samplers: From the Victoria & Albert Museum (1st Edition).

  1. Having gotten back into embroidery after a lapse of more years than I care to admit I borrowed this book from the Libary and immediately purchased the book from Amazon. The very clear pictures and the detailed close ups are exactly what you need and after a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum has inspiried me to start a personal sampler.

  2. Filled with large color plates, most with a detail added to show stitching on a particularly lovely band. These are remarkable samplers, mostly English, all very old and THE GOOD STUFF. The examples of whitework, especially, just don't seem like anything human hands could do. What a great book to dream through!

  3. If you have an interest in samplers this book is a MUST! The photography is incredible. There are over 100 color plates of a wide range of samplers from the museum. Every plate has a picture of the sampler in its entirety and many have a close-up of a section of the work which allows you to see the individual stitches in great detail.

There are samplers from a wide range of techniques and subject matter. Techniques include cross stitch, blackwork, drawn thread, cutwork, crewel, specialty stitches, and Berlin work. There are band samplers, spot samplers, and darning samplers. There are samplers depicting maps, almanacks, and the solar system. There are samplers from England, Germany, Turkey, Morocco, America, Scandinavia, and West Africa.

This is a book you will come back to again and again.

  1. this book is written by one of britains best tvhost and journalist. Lowri is the host of 'looking good'on the BBC and writes for British ELLE Magazine. Great book.

  2. This book is put together wonderfully to inform the reader of Gianni Versace's exotic, flamboyant and tragic life, as well as fill the book with pictures of Gianni Versace, models and his work of art in clothing.

3 comments about Fifty.

  1. The book tells the story about one of the greatest men on the fashion bussiness and how he built his brand diesel. He was a visionary and a dreamer also. The book is a lesson of life. If you like fashion and design and great biographys I'm sure you'll love the book.

  2. In a sea of pop star denim brands, Diesel is the David Bowie of premium denim, sets while concurrently challenges the standard of the market, this anthology chronicles Diesel's history as well as owner, Renzo Rosso's colorful life. Inspiring and literally jaw dropping, this very 'Diesel' book needs to find a home in every denim head/advertiser/marketer/graphic designer's coffee table. An almost literal love letter with tributes from the Bono to the Dali Lama. Now if only 'Fifty' came with a pair of denim...

  3. The book is great! It's totally Diesel styled, and gives many great information about everything concerning Diesel from the very beginning of it's founder's life.
Dvd is good too, though I expected a bit more of it.
    Package is A+!
