2 comments about John Allen's Treasury of Machine Knitting Stitches.

  1. This is an excellent book for machine knitters. It doesn't matter what type of machine you own, this book is a great source for ideas. The book has very clear instructions and wonderful color photos of the techniques. If you have a chance to own this book than grab it! You won't be sorry!

  2. What a pitty that this book is out of print! I found it at the library. This compendium of stitches is a feast for the eyes. The author presents each one of his samples in glorious colors, with detailed explanation on how to achieve them. The variety of techniques used and the multiple possibilities of experimentation, make of this a wonderful step by step teaching book for the beginner machine knitter, and a source of inspiration for the adventurous expert who wants to go beyond the limits to make of this craft an art.

2 comments about Vintage Style 1920-1960 (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. This book is packed full of photographs and is very informative, but if mannequins are going to be used to exhibit the garments, as is often the case, then time has to be taken to pin them in to make sure they look good on. Some of the garments photographed are just hanging loosely and the overall photography of this book (focus and lighting) has a dull feel to it. A bit of a shame because the content is wonderful.

  2. Though a bit expensive, this book is well worth the money! We sell vintage clothing and this has been an invaluable resource guide. I return to it time and time again. Packed with beautiful color photos...descriptions...glossary...great period millinery ads. A must for the collector or dealer in vintage clothing!

4 comments about Shells.

  1. Treasures of the Sea was another Pleasant surprise from Author Leonard hill, with some assistance by Pete Carmicheal the "World Famous" Shell photographer. Again, these two mens talents bring together this Leonard Hill book that is a must have for any shell collector or enthusiast alike. The book has amazing photography that is interesting to Malacologists and Conchologists everywhere. This book is a class piece of work and is an awesome follow-up to another fabulous book "The World's Most Beautiful Shells- co-authored by Hill and Carmicheal. Mr Hill should be commended for another solid project on shells.

  2. This is a spectacular coffee table book for anyone who' s the least bit interested in shells. It is enormous and packed with breathtaking photos in rich color on glossy stock. The text is as fascinating as the pictures.

The book features a wide variety of shells, many I have never seen before. It has full-page close-ups of individual shells and several shell collages. It also shows the shells as living creatures in their natural habitat.

Another section has many examples of shells in art including jewelry and postage stamps. There is a detailed caption for each photo. Many of these describe the life of the creature as well as the characteristics of the shell.

If you can tear yourself away from the pictures, the text is equally impressive. It covers evolution, the animals inside, shell structure and classification. It also includes chapters on shell collecting and shells in human culture.

  3. I can not say enough about this book. Open to any page and you will see something new or never noticed before. The pictures are amazing and the variety outstanding. This book is a wealth of knowledge about shells on land and in the sea.

  4. I have just started collecting shells, and this book has been a great source of knowledge about the subject. The pictures are absolutely beautiful, the paper in which they have been printed is very good and the text is mighty clear. This book is likely to be an excellent present even for non-collectors due to its beauty.

2 comments about Shoes.

  1. I have always been interested in costume design and role playing. Footwear is an area that seems to be the most neglected when attempting to re-create a costume from a past era. For those who strive for accuracy in putting together the perfect historical outfit, or even if you just have an interest in shoes in general, this book fits the bill. Wonderful, colorful photos, a highly readable text detailing the history of the crazy world of footwear--the book covers everything involved with shoes and answers most questions the reader may have. From the grotesque to the mundane, we are presented with styles that run the gamut from shoes of leather and iron (ouch!) to platform soles of 12 inches or more. What is surprising is that some styles are still with us today, modernized but still very recognizable. We also learn the painful lengths that people will go for the sake of fashion. Time has changed nothing in this regard, as we still wobble around on stilleto heels and end up with bunions, corns or worse--but we still look marvelous, darling!!! Seriously, if you love to learn about footwear, like to dress in period attire, or are simply a "shoe freak", don't hesitate to buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

  2. An interesting, informative book, full of historic details and colourful pictures. From court shoes of Henry VIII's time to Vivienne Westwood's famous 12-inch platform shoe of the 90s, this book is full of description and history of the item we cannot live without. Features the shoes exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Reading the book is almost as good as going there to see the shoes yourself.
