  1. I found this book to be beautifully written and extremely informative. The images from around the world are gorgeous! A perfect book for a bride to be!!!

  2. There is some good solid history and folklore about rings and weddings in this book.

The problem is, the facts are jumbled up with lots of drively feel-good writing about the romance of weddings. At times it seems like this book was written mainly to get people to spend more money on their wedding ring in the name of history.

I would give this book 5 stars for giddy brides-to-be and sentimental mothers, 3 stars for anyone else. There is enough history here for it to be useful, but it's a lot of trouble to get to it.

  3. I bought this book on impulse, as it came up when I was finalizing another purchase; and of all the books that arrived together this has been the one I have read, and thumbed through most often.
It offers a clear, concise Wedding-Ring History and Traditions, with clear, color pictures. The reading is easy and entertaining (it will be even more if you are planning your own wedding). If you buy it together with "With this Ring", you will get a great sense of the traditions (and fun) around wedding rings and their selection.

  4. This jewel of a book tells you all you could hope to know about the history and folklore of wedding rings, and does so in a delightful highly readable fashion. The book is strewn with literary quotes and has an ample supply of beautiful photos and illustrations.

  1. I almost bought this book at the Whitney for my Mom after seeing some of these photos up close but my corporate discount did not apply and my Mom would not let me pay full price! Needless to say, I'm buying it on Amazon! These reproductions are beautiful and my Mom, a woman of culture and impeccable taste, loves the photos and the fashion; this is a very, very fine book! Read it and be transformed into another era.

  2. George Hoyningen-Huene was one of the most sought-after fashion photographers of the 20's and 30's. However, he was far more than just a hack. In fact, Hoyningen-Huene is regarded by many as the greatest master of photographic lighting who ever lived. Hoyningen-Huene worked before anything resembling contemporay flash photography came along. He worked in huge studios and used whatever lighting worked best, from huge theatrical spots to, on at least one occasion, an ordinary flashlight-and everything in between. If you've never seen his work, it's very easy to predict that you'll find many astonishing and stunning images in this book. As mentioned, what will most strike you is the lighting. However, there is something about the texture of these old black and whites that one seldom finds in contemporary work. Beyond fashion, Hoyningen-Huene was a master portraitist as well, and you'll find quite a few images of Hollywood stars and other celebrities here as well, since he spent the last years of his career working in Hollywood. This book is a must for anyone interested in the History of Photography, photographic lighting, and photo portraiture. It's very easy to give this book the highest possible rating. The only wish one could possibly have after reading it is "Please, give me more!"

5 comments about Omega Designs: Feast for the Eyes.

  1. It amazes me that a well-known maker as Omega has a paucity of books in print detailing the history and products of this renowned maker (at least in English). Other than a hard to get and doubtless expensive official history, this leaves the gentle reader with this book by Mr. Kreuzer. A translation from German, this book is an exception to the overall thoroughness inherent in the German horological press. The history of Omega is very general and reads almost like a sales brochure from the company itself. Little effort is given to chronicling product development, especially in the era following WW 2, the most prolific period for the company and of most interest to collectors. Much better in this respect is the book "Tale of the Seamaster" by Messrs. Nakamura and Noda (Tokyo, World Photo Press). Unfortunately, this is in Japanese. On a positive note, the section in the back of the book detailing Omega movements is quite helpful, and I have often used it to identify watches.

  2. If you are interested in more than how Omega watches look and need to know what's inside them, this book is a great resource. As a collector it's frustrating to see watches listed for sale with movement calibers listed, but not have a source of information that provides details on the movements. For Omega watches only, this book seems to be definitive in this area. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the major Omega lines and the other information on the company, although it's far from comprehensive. I would only recommend this book if you want or need the technical data on the Omega movements.

  3. With a far from comprehensive collection of color photographs of vintage Omega's, a smattering of vintage ad reproductions, and a barely comprehensible company history, this book's only saving grace is the illustrated history of Omega movements.

If you need more movement info than can be found in Cooksey-Shugart, buy this book. Otherwise your money is better spent on something more generic, like (Heinz Hampel's) Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland.

  4. This book tells the long history of Omega and describes all watchlines (Constellation, Deville, Seamaster, Speedmaster etc) very well. There is not much depth, but the book do give you a lot of information about the used movements, great photos and information on all watchlines by Omega. For indepth stories about how watches work, buy Chronograph Wristwatches : To Stop Time; Reinhard Meis, Gerd R. Lang or Wristwatch Chronometers : Mechanical Precision Watches and Their Testing; Fritz Von Osterhausen.

  5. great explanations on the concept of omega watche

1 comments about Millennium Mode : Fashion Forcasts from 40 Top Designers.

  1. This is an amazing book because, rather than offering pics we've all seen before, this book is fraught with new photographs taken expressly for it; and this is because the book shows fashion that is never-before-seen too.

There are lots of books out now (and tv programs too) about fashion for the future, but if you want to see what the really top designers are planning (and clothes that are wearable, not weird), this is the best collection I've seen so far.

  1. Excellent book. I have read other books on the subject and this book by far is worthy of the title - Official Guide... I am well on my way to starting my own line. I would definitely recommend this book for people like me who always wanted to start their own clothing line but didn't know how to get started.

  2. I cannot believe I paid $90 for this book. It looks like it was printed and bound at Office Max. Plus, the price printed on the back of the book is $47.95. If you do some looking around on the internet, and you really want this book, you can order it from the authors on their website. I would not recommend it, though. There are several other books I purchased for less money and have much better, more detailed information.
