  1. This huge book, for me, shows the best thing about fashion and that is the garments themselves. The accompanying text is simple and to the point, no frilling round the edges, like an unnecessary essay. Its order doesn't stick rigidly to a timeline, and allows itself to vear into areas of fashion which re-appear etc. Hilfiger also chooses ungeneralized musicians as examples of fashions connection with music and is also quite up to date with more modern artists etc. All in all the book speaks through its imagery and fashion as an art form, with concise language and a good variety of examples and musicians.

  2. dear readers and viewers
just a quick note to say that I had nothing to do with this Hilfiger product. Mine ('Rock fashion') is a different book.
I like to get the record straight....
    Happy reading
    Josh Sims

just a quick note to say that this Hilfiger product is nothing to do with me! Mine ('Rock Fashion') is a different book altogether. I like to get the record straight...
    Happy reading.

  4. Did Josh Sims do this book?
There are tons of other designers you might want their oppinion on rock n roll instead of all american tommy. He hasn't designed for Rockers in my eyes..

  5. Hmm. This book has some great pix, though none which haven't been published before. But it's a real confusing mish-mash trying to cover shoes say from rock and roll t glitter rock so that you have no idea what the context is.

The other thing is that the writing appears a real rush job. There are some really grave errors - Johnny Rotten was never arrested for wearing one of the controversial Sex shop t-shirts and the correct spelling of the man who founded Carnaby street is John Stephen, not John Steven. May seem a bit anal I know but if you're going to cover this subject, at least pay attention.

All in all a bit of an embrassment for Josh Sims who I think works at The Face.

2 comments about Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Early 1940s (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I am a theatrical costumer. This book has been very beneficial to me and I think that it would be interesting to anyone who needs to know what the average person wore during the 1940's. It includes images of everything from undergarments and shoes to play clothes and evening attire . Some are in color . You can also get a great idea of hair styles for this period . There are sections for children , teens , women and men .
I purchased the companion book which illustrates fashion of the mid 40's
    also .
Because it is compiled from catalog ads, the description of the clothing is under each garment . This was helpful to me in knowing what fabrics were used , and having the little details about the pleating , or what ever else was highlighted about the garment .
It is worth the money .

  2. As a costume designer for theatre, I find this entire series an excellent source of specific research for 20th century real clothing. Because each book is dedicated to only three or four years in history, there is room for a wide variety of products, from lingerie to nursing uniforms to young men's "trendy" sportwear.

5 comments about People And Pearls: The Magic Endures.

  1. This review will be short and sweet.....this book tells a very 'romantic history' of pearls. From the oyster to the necklace, the author kept me reading this book for several hours. The pictures are also beautiful, including everyone from maharajas to celebrities. If you like pearls, want pearls or want to understand why people love pearls, than this is the book for you.

  2. Nice book and well written. Not quite technically though but more geared towards the people that wore/wear them; there are some interesting anecdotes in it as well. However, if you want to read about all the ins and outs of e.g. Tahitian and/or South Sea pearls, I'd recommend the pearl book by Schoeffel or "Cultured Pearls, the first 100 years". Neverthess, it remains a very enjoyable book.

  3. i would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in beautiful photography and the allure of a good story. The authors do a wonderful job portraying the pearls themselves, but also the people who have worn them. Truly terrific!

  4. Gorgeously illustrated and written with a witty mastery of the subject, PEOPLE & PEARLS is an essential look at these most fascinating of precious objects. Brava to authors Hackney and Edkins for a read which proves both entertaining and informative.

  5. Wonderful book, with photos of glamorous people wearing stunning pearl jewelry. After reading this book, I run to my jewelry box and put on a strand of pearl, feeling glamorous myself. Truly a lovely book!

3 comments about Zipper: An Exploration in Novelty (Reprint).

  1. This is the fascinating story of this marvel of "ingenious and effective design" that everybody today takes for granted. From the late 19th century invention of the hookless (but bugfull) fastener that was sold door to door by peddlers to today's ubiquitous zipper, it is the story of the Hookless Fastener Company's and others' decades-long search for mass volume consumer applications and how it eluded them one after another until Goodrich introduced its Zipper boots.

It is the story of how and why the design evolved over time. It is the story of the people behind this innovation, and it is the story of how a little company grew to become a 5000 employee leading company in 1937 and then lost its grip on the market as its innovation got universally adopted.

    R. Friedel illustrates in the most interesting and convincing way how a discontinuous innovation like the zipper gets accepted: one successful application at a time. There is much to be learned in this fascinating story for impatient entrepreneurs and whoever wonders how to bring innovative products to mainstream markets.

    A great read. Highly recommended.

  2. This is the history of the zipper's evolution from unwanted gizmo to ubiquitous tool. The story of the tinkerers who invented it, the hucksters who sold it, and the businessmen who persevered and - at last - succeeded with it is not very different from those of many 19th-century inventions. This is one of the most interesting to read about. The emphasis is more on the early "hookless fastener" devices than on the zipper we know today.

  3. The above reviewer (atlanta) does the book a disservice. Zipper is a wonderful read, from top to bottom,a nd I have even re-read the book. I don't usually re-read anything! In fact, I gave a copy to a business colleague since it is exactly such an interesting confluence of industrial and business history!

Buy the book. It's highly enjoyable reading. Not technical, not threatening, but a wonderful romp through the difficulties and challenges of building the common everyday object, the Zipper. Esp3ecially noteworth is the author's research into the zipper's international marketing and the zipper's socio-cultural impacts.

5 comments about The New Professional Image: From Business Casual to the Ultimate Power Look.

  1. It seems that in our ever-increasingly casual society, we have lost some of our common sense when dressing for the office. This book has no surprises - there are no hidden secrets for compiling a work wardrobe - if we put a bit of thought into it, I'm sure most people could determine on their own that belly tops, sandals, frayed jeans, see-through blouses and poor grooming are potentially career-limiting moves.

The information in this book is pretty basic. Save your money - you can probably get this quality of advice from Mom - for free.

  2. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to making a positive impact through appearance, this is your book. I am a recruiter with a Fortune 100 company in the US, and a professional image consultant recommended this book to me when I originally began my position. As a person who was looking for solid guidelines around professional dressing, as well as a reference for others who are looking to improve their appearance, I have found no other book to be comparable.

There are many aspects which make this book such an important resource for professionals:

    1. The author provides specific guidelines around what items should be in a professional wardrobe, even going as far as to outline what quantities are particularly helpful of each piece of clothing.

    2. The book is filled with "before and after" pictures, which allow the reader to see first-hand how the author's recommendations can make a startling appearance alteration.

    3. To reflect the variety of workplace formality levels, there are six levels of workplace dress covered in the chapters. For those people who work for companies that have never successfully defined "Casual Friday", this book gives a lot of great hints of how to dress casual but still remain professional.

    4. Two separate chapters outline accessories and generic grooming guidelines, and I have only found those hints in this particular guideline book.

    5. For people looking to improve their wardrobe on a limited budget or a first job out of school, the author does not suggest spending a fortune on designer clothing. Rather, she suggests some key pieces to acquire first, and then others that can be obtained after your finances begin to improve.

Overall, I see the negative impact every day in my position from candidates who do not make the extra effort to go from "dressing up" to "looking professional". I strongly suggest that you make the $15 investment in this book, since it could help you to acquire the high paying career of your dreams!

  3. This book is an excellent guide to dressing for the workplace regardless of where you work. I especially liked the sections on business casual (for both men and women). This section helped me to see that, though I am a manager in my firm, I was dressing like the delivery man. There are so many options for dressing these days and dress has become so casual that we lose sight of the impact that our clothing has on others and the subtle signals we send. The authors do an excellent job of demonstrating how important dress is, especially for women. And, it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to dress well, it just takes conscious buying and this book as your guide. If you feel like you are not making the impact at work and maybe in your life that you would like to make, get this book. Perhaps your appearance is sending a different message.

  4. As a young woman entering the workforce, I recognized the need to make a strong first impression. What I lacked was the concrete rules to pull this off. This book is outstanding! Given to me as a present, it will surely serve as my dressing bible for years to come. I was especially helped by the dress/grooming guidelines given for specific occasions and the tips for creating a more polished overall look.

Just be forewarned that the women's photos show fashions which are about five years out of style, but the overall ideas are still applicable to everyday life. Men's fashions are a lot more constant so their section is still current.

  5. I am currently beginning my second career and needed the Zero to 60 information, now, to level the playing field. You may think, gee, this guy should know all the rules--but my first career was 25 years in the military. Susan Bixler and Nancy Nix-Rice have me confident that when I walk into the interview, I will have the external factors covered (the first 30 seconds)--they even give you hints on how posture, speak, and express the internal you--your knowledge, skills, and ability. I notice people much more now--I look for the suit and tie color, suit make, belts, shoe style, etc., to see the type client the individual is playing up or down to. If you're at all uncertain--this is your next book--you will not be sorry.
