2 comments about Navajo Rug Designs (Look West Series).

  1. This is a very little book with a cursory overview of the topic. It's deceptive in that it looks like a real book, but is just a cute little booklet.

  2. Many a homeowner would incorporate a Navajo-style rug design into a home project without a second thought about its background history: what better guide for enlightenment or coffee table than the small Navajo Rug Designs by Susan Lowell, discussing color, patterns, and history of the Navajo rug. Anthropology and textile art blend in a discussion which includes both vintage photos and colorful rug images from more modern times. A lovely, detailed coverage.

5 comments about Halston: An American Original.

  1. Photographs are worth the price of the book alone! I haven't had a chance to read any of the text yet, but there's a lot of it, and a lot of STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHS! THE BEST PHOTO HISTORY OF HALSTON I'VE EVER SEEN. MANY THANKS TO THE AUTHORS FOR THIS WONDERFUL BOOK AND LABOR OF LOVE! LOTS OF HUGE, COLOR, AND RARE PHOTOS. THANKS!

  2. A tasteful book that focuses on Halston's unique talent. He really was "An American Original."

  3. If you like fashion..you'll love this book. I have to agree with June Weir, former fashion editor of Vogue and Harpers, its a wonderful book that covers the designer's rise to success in great detail. The photos were exceptional!

  4. Roy Frowick Halston is rolling over in his grave faster than he ever did at Studio 54. The sorry accumulation of texts and stilted design make this a disappointment for Halston fans.

Does it address the body of work? No. We have had stupid anecdotal accounts galore, but this is a shame-faced attempt to be - WHAT? Coffee table tome? It cannot be. Too ugly. Some quality assessment of his millieu? Not a thing. Who are all of these parties involved? Embarrassing. Do not waste your money.

  5. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER UNDERWHELMING BIO on a Fashion Designer...Considering how important he was, the book is poorly edited, and cheaply done. It is well-researched though, but this hardly gives the reader a feeling for how this man changed the way women dress...I FELL ASLEEP!

5 comments about Catherine Walker.

  1. Some interesting material presented here, would've been nice had Diana lived to write a forward for it. Anyone buying this book with the idea of getting a lot of Diana material will see some of that. You will also be getting, as the title says, a lot of autobiographical material about Ms. Walker. No scandalous stories, many good photos, not all of them of the Princess. I personally think someone wanted to boost the sales by emphasizing the Diana link.

  2. I happened upon this book one afternoon on my lunch hour. How I missed it's release I will never know. I went back that night and read it cover to cover and then bought it. It is perhaps the definitive book about the inside details about Diana's life, but also about Catherine Walker's as well. The book was clearly not meant to be another glossy "Diana" book rehashing all of the same old information. It was a guide to life with pictures and sketches. I laughed, I cried, I still read it about once a week. It is inspirational. If you are looking to read a book about Diana that has nothing new to say, do not read this book. If, however, you are a serious follower of the world of coture (and Catherine Walker) this book is a must. You will finish it and feel as if you were there during the fittings. BRAVO!

  3. This is an amazing illustration and revelation of one of our world's most talented designers who also happened to be one of Princess Diana's most astounding friends and helpers in that wondrous world called royalty. I found the tale of Catherine Walker so informative yet I was still left with numerous questions as to some of the details surrounding her life before and after she became famous. The photographs are gorgeous and reveal some interesting examples of a lady who truly fits the description designer. Catherine Walker will always be one of the world's most gifted dress makers but I'm still curious as to how one would go about actually seeing her shop or, imagine this, buying one of her creations. Undoubtedly she deals with only the rich & famous while all the time remaining in the background. This is one among many of my Princess Diana books I cherish because of its detail and marvelous focus on a multitude of gowns and their intricate pieces. Catherine Walker is an amazing woman who has truly lived a life from tragedy to fairy tale status. I am an avid admirer. This book is far more than pages/pictures between covers; it's a gift of for the eyes and heart! Wonderful!

  4. The night the book arrived from London, I read it cover to cover. It offered me a glimpse into the elegant world of fashion and royalty. Ms Walker provided her view of her world with a very human, caring all the while impassioned tone. This is an inspirational book to be read by afficionados of the late Princess Diana and the world of couture. A success story, not stymied by tragedy. The perfect gift for any occasion.

  5. i have always been interested in princess diana. her most fabulous clothes always seemed to be designed by catherine walker, always a name without a face. now we can learn about the tragedy that turned this woman into one of the greatest designers of our time. catherine walker has carved out a place for herself in fashion history. an interesting story with beautiful photographs. a must have for all princess diana fans as well as fashion fans.

  1. Just bought it. Absolutely beautiful illustrations! The cover is ugly but there are only a couple done in that style. The rest are sensual, colerful, lush and fun. Inspiring especially if you like this era of clothes. LOTS of pics. One of my favorite fashion books.

5 comments about The Long and Short of It: The Madcap History of the Skirt.

  1. This is the best book I've read about fashion in a long time. AliBayse is a fantastic writer!

  2. Alright, I would not have given this book a thought, but one night I saw it sitting on our table, obviously something my wife had found interesting. Being myself a strange fact freak, and self-proclaimed encyclopedia of odd knowledge, I thought I would thumb through this for a new tidbit, I could toss at my most times annoyed friends.

About an hour later,I found myself finsihing what I found to be an incredibly well researched history of what I now realize an important part of American pop culture and fashion.

The two things I found most facinating were the garment studies applied to old films such as Tarzan/Jane series, and the pop culture influenced skirts that were also game boards, pinning the wearer to the ground while friends played backgammon and checkers around her (or his, as in the case of Ed Wood) folded knees.

Since every example could not be illustrated, the editor has done a fantastic job of selecting the ones that you look for after reading the kitchy text.

In short. A quick read that will not let down purveyors of fashion, art , and culture. Never to forget a great bit of memory feed for the know-it-all

  3. Not only is it the perfect size to fit in my jeans-skirt back pocket, this book packs so much interesting (and funny) information into it's colorful pages I want to take it any place I might need a quick escape (like the bus, or ummm work). Until I'm finished reading it, of course, and then it's got its place on my coffee table. I love the illustrations and witty repartee, and the book just looks smart, too. I can finally play it off like I'm that well-dressed, flirty, and sophisticated girl with her finger on the pulse of fashion. Amen for books that do the work for you. I recommend it!!

  4. I was bowled over by this clever book. Well researched, written in an engaging style, sophisticated AND funny, with so many tidbits of information, that it was exciting to turn the page to see what new surprising fact would appear. Didn't know there was so much to know about the skirt! I recommend this book to all women ( men will get a kick out of it too ), and wonder what Ali Basye's next book is about? Please hurry, Ms. Basye! I loved this BIG little book!

  5. Fun and witty perfectly describes this book! It's a great little page turner that tells you everything you'd ever want to know about the history of every woman's favorite clothing item, the skirt, with great illustrations to boot. I would definitely recommend this book -- it's the cat's meow! (see section on flapper slang) Read and enjoy !
