- This has become one of my favorite books ever! Lynne captures your heart and your mind with simply written phrases. She's the ultimate writer, none of her words are wasted, and she draws you in with her vivid story telling. Her gift is using words with great skill and economy, all the while leaving vividly painted pictures of those people and places that graced her life. I find her to be a graceful, poignant writer, an American Treasure.
- Ms Cox has done a GREAT job telling her story of a preacher's daughter. She *made* me feel the joy, sadness, happiness, and disappointments of life. It takes a very unique author to perform this type of writing. Ms. Cox did that! Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down until I had finished it. I'm recommending it to all my friends!!
- Lynne Cox shares events from her personal diary, kept as a child. The sweet perspective she has on life is fresh, funny, and at times heartwrenching. You laugh and cry with young Lynna-Girl as she deals with the challenges of life in the '40's and as she learns to be a Preacher's Daughter. Easy to read - you just can't put it down. I would recommend this book to young and old.
- This is the story of a family written from the diary of the author and her childhood remembrances. Lynne has a true ability to put us into the part and make us remember the little things from
childhood--such as lime popsicles and hurt feelings because of no compliment when wearing that special yellow blouse. The lines are centered, which makes it easier reading, but it is not poetry.

5 comments about Boyhood Along the Brook Called Horn.
- I have very close ties and fond memories of rural California during the 1940's. Mr. Jeter was able to capture those memories and put them on paper - a rare gift. As well as enjoying the stories, I found his artwork delightful. I have recommended it to all my friends as: one of those books that makes you very sad when you are finished and realize that you have to leave this young man's adventures behind.
- I read a chapter of this book every night before I go to sleep. It relaxes me and makes me smile. Author Bill Jeter's account of a happy boyhood takes me back to the summers that I spent in his neighborhood -- the California Sierra Mountains -- with my parents and relatives. Jeter writes from the viewpoint of a boy, in rich, descriptive language, and illustrates his adventures with delightful, pen-and-ink drawings. He has captured the high whistle of the winds, the pungent pine smell of forest air, the music of running brooks, and the unspoiled sweep of high meadow. His accounts of hiking, camping out, cleaning a rifle, hanging out at the general store, rafting on the nearby creek, and making his own rafts, backpacks, boomerangs, and kites, restore my faith in children's creativity and craftsmanship. I plan to read this book again and again. It makes me want all children to experience the beauty of growing up in nature, with parents who encourage them to do things for themselves.
- Bill Jeter and I are old college friends and we shared may adventures as young adults.
The sincerity and truthfullness with which Bill recalls his boyhood was indeed refreshing and took me back to my youth many times. In talking with Bill he never refers to himself as a great writer, only a "creative rememberer." I believe that he only has the thought half right, he is a great writer
- What a great glimpse into simpler times, before a TV in every house, before Game Boy, Nintendo and computers! A time when a kid used his imagination for entertainment. My 8 year old son had a great time reading this with me. We strongly recommend it for summertime reading!
- Amazingly enjoyable book! I laughed and I cried as I followed Billy Jeter around in these true reminiscences of a young boys life in small town America. This author captures the essence of being a boy: making discoveries, a boy's imagination, creating adventure, innocent and hilarious mischief.
This was like reading about my own childhood. I could smell the smells, laugh at the laugh's, feel the "scardiness" of getting into trouble. The railroad adventure is a dream I always had, but never had the guts to do as a kid. I lived it finally, vicariously through Jeter's real life description. His drawings give life to each story, and amazingly some of them look just like the stuff I was trying to create or play with as a kid. Except he did it a lot better. Read this book if you want to re-live your life as a kid, or perhaps want to see what it should have been like. It has everything: nostalgia, memories, and a glimpse of a simpler and less ccyical time in life.

- This is a wonderful story, beautifully written. One woman's memories of being sent to Wales to live with strangers when she was only seven years old. There were many "evacuees" during WW2 and after reading this story, I wish all of them would write of their experiences. My only quibble with the book is that I wish that the author had told the reader what became of the Welsh couple that took her in. Any reader who enjoyed the book would certainly want to know! For another wonderful story of an evacuee who went to America at age seven, read Anthony Bailey's marvelous "America, Lost and Found" and its followup, "England, First and Last"...all of these books are, sadly, out of print.

- I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I found myself reading the book on my way to work, during my lunch break, and as soon as I got home from work. It was definitely a page-turner & one that I will read again. I give it 5 stars & highly recommend it.
- FROM COVER TO COVER I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. I THOUGHT I KNEW WHAT COURAGE WAS BUT AUNT DOLLIE AND GRANNY < TWO OF THE INCREDIBLE CHARACTERS IN "FEAR NO EVIL" > SHOWED ME WHAT REAL, RAW COURAGE IS ALL ABOUT. I CAN'T WAIT TO BEGIN READING IT AGAIN! WHAT A POWERFUL, INSPIRING STORY.
- "FEAR NO EVIL" WAS OUTSTANDING! I PREDICT IT WILL BE A BEST SELLER AND BE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME TO COME AS A GUIDE TO LIVE BY FOR ALL WHO READ IT. SIMPLY STATED, "FEAR NO EVIL" DELIVERS BIG TIME. IT IS THOUGHT PROVOKING AND GAVE ME A LOT TO THINK ABOUT. I THOUGHT THE AUTHOR'S < VERNON STEVE WEAKLEY > PREVIOUS BOOK "STANDING AT THE EDGE OF MADNESS" WAS INCREDIBLE. BUT THIS BOOK "FEAR NO EVIL" EVEN SURPASSED IT. WOW!!!!
*BEING FROM NEW YORK, I ESPECIALLY LIKED THE AUTHOR'S EXTREMELY POSITIVE, PATRIOTIC THOUGHTS ABOUT 911 AND HIS CONSTRUCTIVE CORRECTIVE APPROACHES TO SOLVING THE LINGERING PROBLEMS OF RACISM IN AMERICA. VERNON STEVE WEAKLEY IS TRULY AMERICA'S CONSCIENCE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL.
- I found myself totally enthralled by this outstanding book. I recommend it highly for all. QUITE Often i buy books to read with the thought that they will help me fall asleep at night as I read. But, this was definitely no the case with this exciting book. Once I opened "FEAR NO EVIL" and began the incredible journey through its pages, i simply could not stop! It opened my eyes and had me sky high with anticpation. ... I've even called friends late at night and read portions of it to them to get them pumped up as well. What an amazing story line. MR. WEAKLEY knows how to tell a story and seduce his readers with his consuming emotions, great sense of humor and soothing passion. Even though i have now finished "FEAR NO EVIL" BY VERNON STEVE WEAKLEY, I FIND MYSELF while AT WORK, or on MY BREAKS, SNEAKING A PEEK BACK THROUGH ITS interesting PAGES just to revisit a premise or get a good laugh from one of the author's funny stories. I have also turned my co-workers and church members on to this excellent book due to its positive and uplifting religious insight. I also liked the author's views on racism past and present day. I can't wait to read the next book by this outstanding author.

- I have worked with Judith for years and I knew she would always write a good book This One I really Likes Jan
- This wonderful book, talks of family life. If they would read the book it is true to the heart. The storys are to encourage and instill memories in all. Family is what makes life more interesting in this cold hard world. Learning about farming is what was in this book. If you read it you will find it is not to tear down but show our lives in a positive light. As for Aunts and Uncles it is not to destroy anyones reputation but to acknowlege their existence on this planet earth we live on. IF names were changed it was to protect them. If they were used it is in honor to them. The author has no intention to hurt those who were shown love in the book. Read the book and feel the love for if anyone of you read this book. If is not about her aunt and uncles but about her and her family. The aunts and uncles are in everyones life. And yes the stories are true. The book is a biography. If anyone reads it they love it.
- it wasn't a real true story about her at all it was based on her aunt's and uncle's life.it didn't make since that she put her words into a story that didn't make since for her life. She used her aunt's and uncle's personel lifes in the book with out even asking them at all with out permission.and shouldn't even be sold at all. and makeing money out of her aunt's and uncle's life they should recieve it.and stuff that didn't even happened to her and it wasn't true at all the stuff she said about her aunt's and uncle's should have been personel and the media shouldn't even now the stuff at all.
- Wow! Growing up on a farm in 1968. It was an experience to live.I think it's better than little house on the praire. This book puts you there in 1968 on that 40 acre farm. I learned how farming was through Judith's eye's was exciting. This book took me through adventure, and back through time. It is truly positive and inspiring. She shared the joy of owning a pony for the first time. Unexpected things thing's alway's happened. And the illustration's will blow you away. I think every kid should have one!It would be good reading material for school's. It will truly intrigue you. The reading is easy to follow and very enjoyable. I recomend it to everyone whoever wanted to be on a farm. Who has been on a farm.Or to those whoever dreamed of being somewhere other than they are right now. Or to anyone who just want's positive, non-violent,and enjoyable reading material.
