1. As a museum director in Livingston, Montana, and teacher of a class on the history of the Yellowstone basin, this book is my foremost recommendation as an introductory survey to the breadth and depth of the regions history. Material covers only the "White European" history of the area with the early la Verendrye and Lewis and Clark explorations. Then there is the fur trade, Bozeman and Bridger Trails, Northern Pacific Railroad surveys, Sioux Wars including the Battle of Little Big Horn, founding of Yellowstone Park, early settlement, cattle industry and rustling including the Johnston County Wars developments and the demise of the Native way of life and open country, all of which are enticingly explored.
   Numerous characters of intrigue are mentioned. There is a mention of contributing works at the end. Drawn maps are helpful for orientation. The one criticism is that the book has no footnotes. Also, some very significant books have recently been published that cover smaller areas of the story in greater depth. Several are: Jay Cook's Gamble by Lubetkin, Calamity Jane by McLaird, The Lance and the Shield by Utley and Frederick Billings by Winks.
   Again, it is a great starting point and highly recommended!!



2. This is one of the best books I have read on the history of the Yellowstone basin. My interest in this area is fanned by the fact that my great grandfather was a mining engineer and Sherrif at Virginia City, MT prior to the turn of the Century.



3. this is a must read for anyone who is going to travel to South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, etc.

1. IDYLLS AND IDOLS by Will Wolf is a marvelous little gem and should be required reading for any student who is interested in a social science career. Through a light tongue-in-cheek style, Wolf gives the reader an adventure in past and current cultural lifestyles and human accomplishments.

   Wolf's prose is clear and compelling. Most importantly, he delivers quality knowledge within an enjoyable and entertaining framework of participant observation.

   IDYLLS AND IDOLS is a "journal experience" that leads the reader through the art and science of description and explanation. I strongly recommend IDYLLS AND IDOLS to all students of human affairs.

2. This will be the next book I read to my children; the chance to learn about ancient civilizations and archeological method with an exciting story.



3. The book give the reader an insite to what Mexico was in the fifty {Yuatan) Once I started reading I could not put the book down. The author has the abilty to place the rader into every active of the story.. He has a wonderful writing syle and a way to put life into the many character and situation that are covered in the book. A refreshing tale that every one will enjoy experience. A must for every young person.
