1. I personally know the author, which is why I bought this book. Knowing several of the people involved colors my review.
   
   Overall this was a good book, worth reading. It suffers from being nonfiction. The plot is simple, take a couple boats across the Atlantic. You can't make up pirate attacks just to make it more exciting (there was a slight worry one could happen but it didn't because they were smart enough not to go to areas where it could happen). A lot of time had to be skipped (got up, brushed my teeth, breakfast type of thing), but the transitions between the times when anything happened were a little abrupt.
   
   Overall though I enjoyed it. I think you will too.
   
   Note, if you are into airplanes you should definitely read this book. The author started/ran several airlines in his life. While just a side item, the historical Aviation details are much better done than the boat trip itself. An Aviation nut must not miss reading this book.

1. This is one amazingly beautiful book, impeccably written, extremely well documented, and full of real life emotions. Is like if you, yourself were traveling through the Arctic, in the turn of the century...not only a beautiful disclosure of geography and The Powerful Inuit culture, but an astonishing book, full of the poetry, from the perspective of a very lonely man, who was brace enough to write lovely eulogies for the woman of his life. Gísli Pálsson has managed to give us a wonderful book, that depicts not only the life of the great Manitoba's born explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, but also to present a treaty of the life in the Arctic, and the amazing Inuit Culture, who for more than four millennia have been traveling and living in `A Vast Land' that some others have crossed in comfortable ships -under and above. This is a book that deserves a site of honor in a wonderful library. When Stefansson writes in his poem: "But if the prize of a woman's love falls not on me, neither on you, let us hide the affliction of a ruined life in hard work that is strong and true... for those who have built some fairest shrines,have been those denied a woman's love, therefore denied, the life of a happy man.." You have only a hint of how excellent this book is.

   de Rougemont uses clear, inviting, inventive language to describe his triumphs and losses. No hidden meanings or complicated subtexts here; just a ripping good yarn based on this fellow's endless adventures. And no analytical coldness or floods of facts, either -- this guy lived fully and completely on every level and conveyed his triumphs and disappointments stoutly and directly.
