5 comments about Barbie: The Icon, the Image, the Ideal an Analytical Interpretation of the Barbie Doll in Popular Culture.

  1. It's really hard to understand why this has got a series of 5 star rating...
I feel really sorry to say that "this is really disappointing book" because I had been looking forward to read it.
But this only provides poor analysis, poor theoretical ground, and poor argument.
Yes, there are surely lots of things to say about Barbie, but I think you can chose another books.

  2. It's so refreshing to see this outlook on Barbie with all the propoganda out there telling us this is how we should look. We're so highly influenced by everything we read or see that sometimes we lose sight of the importance of what's on the inside, not the packaging. It is important to "give kids" and "the world" a more realistic perspective of this over-advertised icon. Thanks and admiration go to the author!

  3. I just finished reading this book basically because I knew of the author and wanted to see her work. I was really impressed with the writing, and so much so, I passed it along to my fiance, who in turn started to pass it to her friends. If you are into deep talks on image, perspective, or just Barbie, it's great. I honestly didn't think I would be able to understand it or get much from it because I'm a guy not into dolls, but I really took a bit away with me. I just wonder if the author ever wanted to be a blonde?

  4. On behalf of a study group working on a paper regarding the Barbie fascination, we found this research book perfect. We have covered the Barbie book range from texts in libraries to texts in major book stores, and have found that most of them out there are about Barbie fashion and how many times can you hear about her measurements. This book had it all. The author really covered all the basics but then took a deep personal look into what the doll truly means to women in society today. She made really interesting comparisons and gave us a full bibliography. You can tell that when writing this, she also covered all the books out there because many of hers listed as research we also found, but she truly gave her work a different spin. We learned more from her book than any other, started quite a few great discussions in class because of her insights and we were able to write an A+ plus paper that is being featured in our monthly literary newspaper. It's highly recommended by our class. Oh and other college students like us, if you want a great example of a top thesis, get this book for that reason too.

  5. As a graduate student going for my masters I just want to thank you for this intriguing, in-depth, and amazing book. I have been researching Barbie for the past three months now and thankfully found this book that was a godsend in helping me analyze this icon of American culture. As for the past review I can't help but wonder what school this professor teaches at because I would like to warn his or her students to drop the class! Sounds more of an immature high school student with a grudge than of high-class well-educated professor. If you wish to dive into the world of Barbie this is the book for you!

1 comments about Dolls' Houses: Domestic Life and Architectural Styles in Miniature From the 17th.....

  1. I really enjoyed reading Dolls' Houses. This book is well organized and easy to read with a large number of beautiful color photos. The authors are obviously experts on the styles of doll houses through the past centurys. The presentation of doll houses starts with the 1600's all the way up to the present time. I highly recommend this fascinating book!

3 comments about Chatty Cathy and Her Talking Friends: An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. This book is exactly what I needed. I have started collecting ventage dolls from the years that I played with dolls. The book has helped me identify the correct names and shows information about them. I'm so glad to find this book!

  2. The photos in this book are big, clear and there are some very nice toys shown. Given the price of this book I sincerely thought it would be more thorough given the VAST amount of Mattel talking toys that were made. It is nice to have as an addition to one's collection. One thing that bothers me is that it is "An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors" which means that material gathered was done so without permission of Mattel and therefore may have some information errors. In addition to this book I encourage you to read "Chatty Cathy Dolls" and "Talking Toys of the 20th Century" by Don & Kathy Lewis.

  3. I was thinking this book was just going to be about the Chatty Cathy family, but it also includes a historical time line of sorts of almost all of the talking (and some other) dolls that Mattel made. Very helpful in identifying talking Mattel dolls of the 60s and early 70s. The Chatty Cathy section includes some info not included in an earlier book. Fun to look at and informative

5 comments about Crissy Doll and Her Friends: Guide for Collectors.

  1. This book is great. Provides a lot of information on crissy and her family. Includes info and pictures of clothing also great helpful hints on restoration. Restoration tips can be used on other dolls as well.

  2. Beth Gunther knows her Crissy family! She has filled her book with well-researched facts and beautiful photos. Her guide to this family of dolls is very complete and makes a good companion when doll shopping. Additionally, she includes a section on styling Crissy's hair. I didn't realize it was possible to work with synthetic hair and make it look good again. I think her techniques would also work on other "modern" dolls. I wrote to Ms. Gunther shortly before the book was released, and she was kind enough to reply. I'm sure she is a doll "reporter" who will be around for a long time. If you love Crissy, you can't go wrong with this book by Beth Gunther. It's a keeper. I look forward to seeing more of Ms. Gunther's work in publication; perhaps a book of sewing patterns for the Crissy family.

  3. This book is a must-have for any Crissy collector! Beth Gunther has done an incredible job of detailing each Crissy family doll as well as the outfits, accessories, and related toys. The book is organized well, with a comprehensive price guide and collector's checklist at the end. Included are many rarities and catalog outfits. Even if you are not a die-hard collector, Gunther's photos of groovy 70's outfits take the reader on a fun-filled trip down memory lane! Yeah, baby!!

  4. This book is well written, thorough, and a must-have guide for collectors. It is better than the other book currently available ! I have learned a lot from Ms. Gunther and have been able to build my collection while also identifying dolls I already owned. I have found her research into the clothing made for the dolls the most helpful. Now I know what to look for on eBay ! Thank you, thank you for writing this book. I recommend it to all collectors

  5. this book brings back many happy memories of playing with my crissy dolls, and finding out how many outfits and accessories i didn't know about!! she also gives you in depth help on helping the dolls look brand new again. that area alone is good for any doll collector!!! don't miss out!!

5 comments about Bobbing Head Dolls: 1960-2000.

  1. Excellent book, well written on a collectible that has received no coverege for too long.Everything you need to know about old bobbing head dolls.

  2. This book is THE guide to get to help you start your bobblehead collection! It has all the old nodders listed, how tough they are to find, variations, and prices. (...)

  3. Anybody who collects vintage 1960's Bobbing Heads needs to have this book. Tim Hunter is the foremost authority on Japan made "nodders" from the 60's and has spent decades researching them. This book has become the "bible" for Bobbing Head collectors, combining a history lesson, detailed price guide, and helpful hints for collectors. Whether you are a veteran collector or a beginner, this book is a must!

  4. As a long time BB card collector, my parents stumbled onto a bobbing head, an item I didn't have. Needless to say I have gotten hooked, with my collection now over twenty dolls. I read the large print on the cover, and thought it would be just what I needed, but the book is really about dolls from 1960-1972. The author simply blows off the newer versions as being too manufactured and barely covers them. A better detail history of the newer dolls and more aggressive price guide would have made this book a 5star.

  5. I just start collecting bobbing head dolls without any knowledge.I wasn't sure where I can learn about.this book helps me a lot.Gives me lots of info etc....I wish this book had a lot more color-photo of dolls.

1 comments about 4th Teddy Bear and Friends Price Guide.

  1. A very useful reference of what items were valued at in 1993. Offers values on American, British and German bears & toys. A lot of good information on the American brand of North American Bear Co. with the VIB and Vanderbear collections. Useful information on Steiff, Schuco Toy Co. and even Raggady Ann and Andy Dolls! I can't wait for a more current 5th edition but this 4th edition is a wonderful reference to at least see what items were valued at by 1993.
