1 comments about Norwich Terrier (Comprehensive Owners Guide) (Comprehensive Owners Guide).

  1. This book was recommended to me by my breeder as the "go to" book for Norwich Terriers. I found it well-illustrated and extremely informative. It covers topics such as the history of the breed, what to get prior to your puppy's arrival, training tips, and development benchmarks. Our Norwich is now 3 months old and we refer to it often. - CTM

2 comments about The Holistic Health Guide: Natural Care for the Whole Dog (Terra-Nova Series).

  1. Not exactly what I would call a good "reference" book since a good many of his statements are not specifically cross referenced with other supporting holistic information/practitioners. For a field that is still largely unregulated, opinions/approaches are still widespread even on some of the most basic of issues like vaccinations. Providing some cummulative consensus would prove more substantive and demonstrates to the reader these statements have been thoughtfully researched. Of course as with any 'advice' obtained from book reading, it is always best to consult with your own trusted vet before making any changes in veterinary treatment.

This book does cover the very broad spectrum of topics within holistic/integrative veterinary medicine, but does not provide enough depth for practical applications. That said, this is one of the most well made books I've had in years. The hardcover binding is of library quality, as are the heavy-weight high gloss pages. The page layouts are very asthetically pleasing both in design, type-face, and color illustrations, so the reading is quite pleasant.

If you are new to the world of holistic veterinary medicine and don't mind spending $15 to get your feet wet, then I would recommend starting with this book. Otherwise, I would recommend Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats along with The Nature of Animal Healing : The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat.

For ongoing, up-to-date topics and information, consider a subscription to The Whole Dog Journal (a monthly periodical, well researched and cross-referenced with a core focus on holistic practices and applications).

  2. It is hard to describe how much I love this book

Most of us who have dogs in our lives consider them part of the family. We all know how it feels to not know how to help them when they hurt. We have all been in a position where we just don't know where to turn. Even the simple questions can sometimes be difficult to answer. We are fortunate to live in a time when science has made great strides in dealing with health issues for not only ourselves, but our pets as well. We also have the benefit of the ancient wisdom of eastern medicine. With all of these opportunities why just take advantage of one or the other? Dr Doug helps to find the answers. He uses his experience with both Eastern and Conventional medicine to explain how a balanced body, mind and spirit is important not only to ourselves but to our canine companions as well. This is not only an informative read, but an entertaining one.

Are you questioning the need for vaccines? Do you wonder if you should use a flea treatment for your dog? Does acupuncture really work? What about those herbal remedies? Chiropractic for my dog? Do you just not know the best way to ensure that your dog is getting the best possible care? Does massage really help my dog? What is homeopathy anyway?

This book shows a typical pet lover how to care for their dogs in the healthiest and most compassionate and helpful ways. You will never regret having this book on your shelf, or in your hands when your little friends need you most.

If you have a dog, you need this book. If you don't have a dog, but are interested in holistic care, read this book.

Now if only Dr Doug would write one for my cats!

5 comments about Chinese Cresteds (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This is a great book on a fascinating breed of dogs. I'm interested in getting a hairless Chinese Crested(how could you look at one and not want it) and this book was a great source of information on the breed.

  2. I think this was a great little book on the Chinese Cresteds. I learned new things about First Aid for dogs that I never heard before..loved the pictures of the True Hairless Cresteds, which seem to be extinct now a days with all the shaving that goes on in this Hairless breed.

  3. good information.
Was worried about some of the sourses but overall good for a beginner.

  4. This is a very good book, easy to read for the Crested newbie. I fell into ownership of a powderpuff puppy and had not much of an idea of what to expect from the breed. I know dogs, just not the Crested breed. The only difficulty I had was to sort through the information to determine the quirks attributed to the Hairless vs the Powderpuff. All too often, these books mention medical problems for the breed, which are in fact only problems for the Hairless and not the Powderpuff. I'd like to see that separated out a little better. There was also some conflicting information that didn't seem to agree with other research I've done and I haven't yet determined which source is correct, but I guess time will tell with my puppy. Pictures of the breed are not completely representative of what you can see out there. None of the powderpuffs shown have had any trimming done on them, so they all appear like little sheepdogs. And there could be more information on the powderpuff. However, overall, this is a good, inexpensive reference for the breed.

  5. The information given in this book is very subjective, and the dogs apearing in it are not the best. I wouldn't recomend this book as a first owners gide. I would only recomend if you want to complete your book collection .

  1. i think this is perfect book to get comprehensive knowledge for NAVLE exams,NBVME list of diseases are best discussed in this book i strongly recomend foriegn vets to read this book.
    FAISAL ZIA.

  2. After using many different references for the first half of my internship, this is the book I most often reach for now. The information is as user friendly as the 5 Minute Consult (an improvement here), and more up to date. There are many, many helpful tables and figures, and the addition of a formulary in the back is welcome. While no book can provide all the answers, I find 90% of them in here. My only complaint is the coverage of emergency care could be tweaked. In critical care situations, when I need information regarding a particular emergency in a hurry, this is not the book I turn to first.

  3. A very handy tome of immense value in the stress situation for quick information as well as for in depth study to bone up on latest techniques and those possibly a bit rusty. I can strongly recommend this, it is excellent value. I would want a more updated model though and hope for a new edition soon--I hope the authors are reading this?

  4. A book which explores the small animal Veterinary field, uses simple and clear explainations to many different issues in that field. As a student for Veterinary Medicine in the clinical stage, I open the book very often. the book is very readable and friendly for students which their first language is other than English (unlike many others we all know).

    You must have it !!!

  1. Over the years my family has had many labs whether they are mix or purebreed. The major point I enjoyed is knowing your labs personality. We know they chew to no end, like water, tennis balls, and are very very stubborn. this books tells you well, yes, they would live with a tennis ball in there mouth all the time, because of breeding. The best way to deal with the chewing and biting. This is worth every penny. Plus it has great tricks to teach you Lab. A Must have if you own a lab. Enjoy your dog to the fullest.

1 comments about German Shepherd Dog: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. While this book is partially biased towards American bred GSDs it is a good inexpensive reference guide to the breed (I would recommend Fred Lanting's book above this one, but it is more expensive). It is detailed and doesn't get too deep into the breed or the health (it's more like a "GSD for Dummies" book).

5 comments about Dog Logic: Companion Obedience, Rapport-Based Training (Howell Reference Books).

  1. I hope to one day love and understand dogs as well as Mr. McMains does. This book has profoundly shaped and influenced my understanding of the canine-human relationship. If you want to be the best owner to your dog -- the owner your dog truly deserves -- then buy this book.

  2. The sub-title of this book, "Rapport-Based Training," made me give it a try, even though I do not employ force-based training methods. I do, however, try to give everyone a fair shake.

However, there were some things in this book -- which is full of hypocrisy, BTW -- that turned my blood cold. His inclusion in puppy testing of checking for pain sensitivity (he calls it touch sensitivity), because your training program will assume the dog will respond to pain, is chilling. And the statement "Experience says that force is an inescapable training element" shows that, no matter how open-minded he says he is in the preface, this trainer has not explored all options. He views "tough" dogs and "submissive" dogs as irredeemable, while other training programs not based in force have turned these dogs into wonderful companions.

Although at no time does the author suggest that he is not a force-based trainer, he states repeatedly in the front matter that he gives a dog a chance to learn before applying force; yet from lesson one he recommends giving a new verbal command to a dog and applying pressure with a pinch collar to force a dog into various as-yet unlearned positions.

I was hoping to find in this book something more based in relationship-building than the traditional correction-based methodology, something I could recommend to those who cling to force-based methods. Yet the only place where I could agree with this author is that a pinch collar is less damaging than a choke chain (which, frankly, has no place on any dog). It was a disappointment.

Better reading materials for those who don't want to use strictly food-based training methods include "Excel-erated Learning" (Pamela Reid), "So Your Dog's Not Lassie," and "Never Say No"(Dr. Mugford).

  3. I found that the author explains the procedures for understanding and being more in feeling with a dog's behaviour very good. His training tips are excellent both for beginners and experienced trainers alike. It is obvious to see from this book that Mr McMains is a professional at training as he shares his experience with the reader.I think that this book will be both informative for professional as well as non professional trainers.I have used many of Mr McMains suggestions while training my 2 dogs and have been pleased with the results.

  4. My only complaint about this book is that I couldn't put it down! Without a doubt the best single book (I still recommend buying several different training books for scope) on dog training ever. This is written for all of us average folks who just want a very stable and well behaved pet that responds to our leadership role in the family. Joel is one of the few authors I've read who seems to really UNDERSTAND dogs and the dog/human relationship as it should be--not as politics or fads would have them be...a must read for the first timer, as well as those of us with years of dog experience. I would also recommend "Manstopper" for a genuine insight into how dogs learn by association. Even if you have no desire or interest in protection training, it will prove invaluable for problem solving (and prevention) in your basic obedience training at home....it teaches you how to think associatively like a dog does. Dog Logic is not a book for the wishy-washy or those of us who don't have time to invest in a regular training routine...it's for people who are serious about having a well mannered dog and want to train in such a way as to INCREASE the trust and love between you and your pet. Happy Training!

  5. I bought this book when I got my first dog of my own. My family have always had dogs but had always been content to get as far as "sit" and then let them do what they wanted. I wanted something more from my dog and suspected what was confirmed by the book: that a trained dog is a happier dog. I've recommended the book to countless others and am about to order it as a gift for someone who recently got their first dog. I hope that it will provide him with as much insight as it gave me and I can assure you that you'll gain plenty of tools, both practical and thoughtful, from this book. More than just giving you a series of instructions, this book will help you to have a little more of an idea of what's going on inside the canine head. And McMain manages, in spite of the obvious love that he feels for dogs, to strip away some of the sentimentality that often clouds our relationships with our dogs. I offer him my thanks, and if he could, I'm sure that my dog would too.
