5 comments about The Tao of Pug.

  1. Whether you're a fan of pugs or not, this book is a crowd pleaser. The lovely black and white photographs are hilariously staged, with Wilson's expressively wrinkly face adding adorable character to every shot. The writing is simplistic enough to be enjoyed by a reader of any age, but still has moments of poignancy ("War is bad for pugs and other living things"). Real taoists can get a laugh out of looking at their religion from a dog's perspective, and everyone else can just admire the clever ideas and charming Wilson!

  2. I'm a Pug fan, so I'll admit bias. The book is on my media room/bar coffee table and our guests have often been delighted with some of the opinions expressed by Wilson.

    It's just a fun book.

  3. I loved this book, and received it as a gift. I wish I could get my pugs to pose like that for pictures, how does she do it? I have purchased this book for other pug friends of mine, and they have simply adored it. I highly suggest this book as a gift to a pug person.

  4. This was great book. The pictures are awesome. It's a must for all pug lovers. I might be a little biased, though, I have a pug named wilson.

  5. The Tao of Pug has great snapshots of pugs, and comically done by "Wilson the Pug", Nancy Levine's pug. 'Black and white isn't so bad', I always think to myself, looking at the pug photos. 'I believe it's just a nice, warm, way of showing pugs off.' The Tao of Pug will always be a family favorite!

3 comments about The Dog Who Loved Cheerios and Other Tales of Excess.

  1. Wonderfully written, humorous descriptions of dogs (& one cat who thinks it's a dog) whom we have all owned and loved for their quirky behaviors! It would be a great book to read when you need a lift, or to use as short stories to read with a young child.

  2. I love this book! I initially bought it for my husband, who is a fan of the author's photos. However, it has quickly become a staple for my children's bedtime stories. We've been talking about the dogs and their escapades nonstop since it arrived. They have become completely involved in the lives of the dogs. They remember every detail of the stories and they've even added their own. It is so funny to hear them asking different questions and forming their own opinions as the doggy dramas unfold.

Okay - enough Mommy in this review. As a person in a creative field, this is a finely executed book. It has gorgeous photography lovingly rendered and is perfectly art directed.

  3. Interseting photos but the text leaves a lot to be desired. It gives fleeting details only, with little or no liking for, or affinity with any of the subjects.

5 comments about Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs.

  1. Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs is a great premise for a book, and if you are both new to either gardening or dog ownership, it would be a good read. The writer presents the information in a logical order and there are plenty of lists. But ultimately it reads like little more than an organized collection of common sense notes.

There are a few aha moments in this easy read but for the experienced gardener or dog owner, those golden tidbits are few and far between. I'm glad I picked up this book, but it did not bowl me over with its imagery, imagination, or concepts.

It is an easy read, the graphics and photos are limited in quantity and quality, but overall it lacks the substance I was hoping for. The writer live in the North West and the content dedicates much of is perspective to this climate zone and type of landscape.

    ~m

  2. Makes me want to write a book on this topic myself.

There are few "tips" in this book, so if you're looking for them here, don't bother. It's mostly stuff like "want a patio? Dogs like patios, here's a general idea of how to build one." Pretty stale.

The photos and landscaping ideas are also too geographically specific -- they'll only work in places that get a lot of rainfall or moisture. I live in the desert and so found most of that part pretty useless.

There's better information online if you simply Google "pet friendly landscaping."

  3. Okay. Not as much information specific to creating a nice doggy retreat. Lots of general garden information though.

  4. Book had some good ideas. However, if your yard is already established the ideas they came up with wouldn't work (at least in our yard). If you are putting a yard in, then you might consider some of their ideas. What I found most helpful was the plant section as to what plants are harmful to your pets.Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs

  5. Cheryl S. Smith's Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs is one of the few discussions of garden design which incorporates a pet's needs and habits. Gardeners and pet owners alike will relish the approach, which tells how to blend traditional garden tasks and designs with a dog's needs. From plants which work well with dogs to creative use of directed digging and growing fruits and veggies for the family pet as well as the family, Dog Friendly Gardens/Garden Friendly Dogs is packed with ideas.

2 comments about Understanding Your Dog For Dummies (For Dummies (Pets)).

  1. This book is a very useful tool for owners in terms of helping them understand a dog's mind. The book is incredibly detailed and extensively describes the stages in a dog's psychological development. It also has sections on handling problems as well as training. The best thing about this book is it gives concrete step by step instructions on training and commands that are easy to understand and follow. It also has an extensive section on interpreting body language and barks. I've read Cesar Milan's books and I find them useless because they're too abstract. They're more a testimonial to his skills than useful information for the average owner. This book is much more informative and helpful.

  2. Having much appreciated other dog books by Stanley Coren, PhD--and having a new dog myself now--I had hopes this book would be worthwhile when I ordered it. I just finished reading it last night, and it is very, very good.

One thing that impresses me in the book is that the reader isn't just told what to do to handle the dog, but is also told why that is what to do. Another thing I like is the authors recognized that all dog owners do not want the same details in lifestyle with their dogs, and presented various options on safe ways to handle things.

The "for Dummies" series includes some duds and some amazing books that are full of extremely valuable details. This is one of the most valuable. Whether you are a new dog owner or an experienced one, you are sure to encounter something new to you and helpful in this book.

The book also does a good job of telling owners when to get in-person, professional help with their dogs. This is vital. There are times when help simply cannot be communicated for the specific problem via the Internet or the telephone. And dogs are here and now beings. Sometimes the expert has to see the situation in person to diagnose the problem.

My young Standard Poodle named Worthy will surely benefit from this book. And so will I.

5 comments about K-9 Bodyguards.

  1. I strongly recommend the methods in this book for selecting and training a home protection dog. The harlowe out alone is worth the price of the book. This is not a book on dog sports, it is geared toward protection dogs that are also the family pet, or police dogs.

  2. This book was a great help with protection training my pitbull. If you start out with a dog with a solid temperament and follow the principles of this book, you can have a good protection dog and a great family pet. The Harlowe method of teaching the out is the kindest to the dog, uses no force, and is very reliable. My dog outed cleanly the first time on a decoy, and never failed to out cleanly. The Harlowe method for teaching the running recall is also very simple and effective. This is the best book I have read on training a FAMILY protection dog, and it is very unlikely that you will need to use any harsh methods if you start early with your puppy. The only other thing I would like to add is that you probably need to work with an experienced decoy and trainer if you are new to protection training, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. It is also takes a lot of time and effort to train a protection dog, you can't do it half way.

  3. Book is very good, but skips to many basics, and you must know somehting about training before buying it. Stories are good, and great pictures, and american bulldog people will love this book for that reason.
Needs more details for beginners. Great for policemen.

  4. I applaude Officer Harlow for writting this book, as it dispells many myths about the breeds and techniques used in creating k-9 body guards. Mike isn't telling people how to train your Aunts golden retriever!! This is a serious book for those who feel inclined to own a dog that could save your life on the streets and in your home. Too many pro dog trainers are scared to death to even think that you can use anything other than Euro hearding breeds to be competant protectors and reliable companions. This is a good book.

  5. I was thumbing through this book at the bookstore. It seems to be okay. The only problem I have with it is that it focuses on the Pit Bull too much. Actually, the one part that I thought was most humorous, was where he listed his favorite protection dogs. He pretty much boiled it down to this: Greman Shepherd Dogs are a good start, Rottweilers are better, and the best are Pit Bulls. I had a good laugh at that one! I can't remember the last time I saw a Pit Bull as a police dog. The German Shepherd Dog, as a breed, is the benchmark for all other breeds when it comes to protection work. The Pit Bull and the Rottweiler are powerful dogs, more bruit strength then the shepherd, but the shepherd has them beat in all other categories. First, the shepherd may be the most intelligent of all breeds in addition to it's dedication to it's trainer/owner, which translates into it's ease of trainability and the ability to do more. Shepherds have a hell of a nose, probably outdone by no one except the Bloodhound, which makes them excellent SAR dogs. They are also one of the most all around athletic dogs. A good shepherd will smoke any Rottweiler or Pit Bull in the sprint or long distance run, they will also easily out jump and out climb them. A shepherds' character has been proven over and over again in WWI& WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Bravery on the battlefield, "Dogs Of War". They would fight along side their master in the face of machinegun and artillery fire. 90% of all the dogs on police and military forces throughout the world are shepherds. And lastly, the German Shepherd Dog is the reigning king of schutzhund. In light of all this, it's kind of hard to take the advice of someone who appears to believe that the shepherd is just a good start when it comes to protection dogs, when, in fact, they are the dog to which all others are judged against when it comes to this.

3 comments about Senior Dogs for Dummies.

  1. This book is an excellent resource and an easy read for anyone with a senior dog. It brings to an owner's attention many areas of aging in a pet similar to human aging. It also gives good advice on dealing with problems encountered with an aging pet.

  2. This book just won a 2004 Maxwell award from the Dog Writers Association of America in the Book: care and health category, and with good cause. McCullough knows what she's talking about. She covers nutrition, exercise, health cost, typical diseases, what to expect, and - of course - a discussion on when is the best time to let your friend go. Housebreaking can be a problem for some seniors, and McCullough recommends bringing out the crate. Certain problems that seniors are prone to, such as going blind or deaf, are discussed, as well as how to help your dog cope. Her practicality and compassionate approach to canine senior citizens, who deserve to lounge about in the sunshine, comes through clearly. Much of what she says is common sense, but if you haven't experienced what happens to a senior dog, this book will really help you prepare, understand what is happening, and what you can do about it.

  3. This is a great resource! I have a 9 year old Sheltie with some health issues and I found this book to have terrific information specific to older dogs. It's a good read straight through or as a reference if you're just looking for information on a particular subject.

  1. Loved the pictures and explanations of all the family members and their dogs. Very interesting book. I enjoyed finding out about the varioues nobility and how they saw dogs, how important dogs were to some of them. Loved the beautiful pics too.

  2. I have long been an admirer of the British Monarchy, for over. I remember skipping school to watch Princess Anne get married. (The first time in the early 70s)

I've known they were animal lovers but this book just shows you how much they cared for their furry friends. I am a dog lover to the max, and this book was just so fascinating.

5 comments about Greyhounds Big and Small: Iggies and Greyts.

  1. I was disappointed with the book, it less than what I was expecting. One of my least favorite Greyhound books. I'll likely be selling it.

  2. This book contains some of the best Italian Greyhound photos ever! As anyone who owns them knows, their personality can be hard to capture. Amanda Jones shows a true connection to the dogs that she photographs.

  3. Whether you are a greyhound lover or iggy lover, this book will tug at your heart. The pictures are beautiful and show so many sides of the breeds. If one of these owns your heart, then you need to own this book.

  4. Beautiful pictures capturing the character of the two breeds and some lovely captions to go with them. A great coffee table book

  5. This book is full of great pictures! Actually, I ordered it for my husband well before Christmas and to my surprise he also bought it for me as a birthday present. We love our IG and love looking at pictures of them. They are such beautiful dogs.
