5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers (JG Dog).
- This is a great book. I learned alot about yorkies that I did not know before.
- This book is invaluable for the new Yorkie owner as well as a great reference for old timers. It is well organized and includes many wonderful photos.
- Back in February of this year we lost Binki,a Lhasa Apso cross Poodle after 17 wonderful years.Prior to that we had a Dachshund,Max, who spent 14 years with us as our 3 children grew up.So,as we are now seniors, our children are all married, and now that we have 8 Grandchildren;we faced the facts and felt our dog owning days were probably behind us.
That is what we thought,we found Bailey, she has now joined the two of us and getting a new puppy was one of the best decisions we've ever made. She is a Yorkshire Terrier cross Teacup Poodle. She will be small, about 7 pounds, doesn't shed and has all the features of what we could want in a dog.She is 12 weeks old,we've had her over a month, and I believe she finds us acceptable.By this point, you can see Bailey is a pet,a member of the family is more like it,and we have no intrest in breeding or showing.Maybe I should qualify that bit about showing. We do a great amount of showing as a matter of fact, everyone in the neighbourhood has fallen in love with her and we can't complete a 10 minute walk in less than a half hour while showing her off and making friends with every person and dog we meet.
We,as the case of a lot of people who have dogs, tended to operate by trial and error in raising them, heck, didn't it work with the kids? Anyway ,I saw this book and thought maybe I could learn something. You've heard the old saying "You can't teach old dogs new tricks"There is simply no truth to that.I am learning lots and there is much more to be gleaned fom this book.
The book is only 160 pages and covers everything you could or should want to know about Yorkies. It will also be kept nearby for reference in the years ahead.
The book discusses how intelligent this breed is,and we have already seen signs of that.If there is anything that I might fault the book for,it is this.I am a very avid reader, but very disappointed that Janet has given absolutely no attention at all on helping me with teaching Bailey to read.I have already been reading to her,she obviously comprehends, nods at the right time, and even dozes off if the story gets too dull.I am convinced she could easily be taught to read, but for that,I guess I'm on my own.
Like I've already mentioned, and so have a couple of the other reiewers, the book covers a lot about breeding and showing in competitions, but that should not deter you from getting it.All the same principles apply, and your little friend is just as important to you and those around you as a Best of Show is to its owner and the show Judges.
Bailey is a great addition to our family and we intend to give her a lot of happiness and I know she will return any love many times over and that doesn't even take into account the companionship we'll all enjoy.
Oh yeah, one other thing,Carol touches on the cost one takes on with getting a dog;but remember this;
"All it takes is money to buy a fine dog,but it takes love
to make it wag it's tail."
- Being a new owner, I wanted a more practical book on the breed.
I found the author to be focused on the competitive aspect and
"quality" breeding lines. For someone who was looking at entering dog shows, this would be a useful book. For me, who
was looking for some insight at the pet level, it lacked practical applications.
- This is a good book for anyone who love littles cuty monster,YorkShire Terrier. U will gain more understanding about this cute little one and it will help u to make a decision if u r fit with this little one or not. This book has many useful things u need to know about yorky. I LOVE THIS BOOK :)

5 comments about Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever: Special Rare-Breed Edition : A Comprehensive Owner's Guide (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- This book by Nona K. Bauer captures the essence of what differentiates the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever from all other retrieving breeds; the "Toller," as it is affectionately known to breed fans, is not merely a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, but a breed in its own right.
For a Toller enthusiast, this book goes beyond all of the essentials of Toller history, conformation, and ownership by pointing out activities and clubs in which Tollers excel (which, it must be pointed out, is practically everything!). These versatile, energetic, social, and fun-loving dogs are champion hunters (their fluffy, brushy tails with their characteristic prance lured, or "tolled" in ducks, making them excellent hunting and retrieving dogs), agility dogs, tracking dogs, therapy dogs--in fact, Tollers are so intelligent that with positive and loving leadership, they succeed in every activity in which they are placed. (Tollers have been trained as avalanche dogs--one was even profiled on "Avalanche Dogs" on the Discovery network of channels.)
I recommend this book to anyone thinking about getting a Toller puppy, for the longtime Toller enthusiast, and/or the serious breeder.
- Very detailed and informative. It otld me everything I needed to know about these dogs.
- If you live in an area with very few NSDTR's. Not only do you need this book, but so does your vet. Give it as a gift to the vet after you read it. It will help you and them keep your toller in the best of health.
- A rather generic book that pastes a few ducktoller specific pages in the front and inserts ducktoller pictures throughout. 90% of the content is general info about dogs.
- AFTER SEARCHING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS FOR SUCH A BOOK,IN PREPARATION FOR THE ADDITION OF A TOLLER PUPPY INTO OUR FAMILY, I WAS RELIEVED TO FINALLY FIND THIS BOOK FROM THE CANADIAN KENNEL CLUB ABOUT THE NOVA SCOTIA DUCK TOLLING RETRIEVER! THIS BOOK ANSWERED ALL OF OUR QUESTIONS WHEN WE WERE NOT ABLE TO REACH THE BREEDER REGARDING TRAINING, HEALTH AND CKC BREED STANDARDS, ITEMS TO BUY IN ADVANCE OF THE PUP'S ARRIVAL TO OUR HOME, ETC. IT IS AN EASY READ, CONTAINS GREAT PHOTOS OF ADULT TOLLERS 'IN ACTION' (IN THEIR NATIVE COUNTRY) AND ADORABLE "aw gee" PUPPY PIX WHILE RELATING THE HISTORY OF THE BREED AS WELL! SINCE THIS RARE BREED IS RELATIVELY NEW TO THE USA, ONLY BECOMING RECOGNIZED BY THE AKC AND FIRST ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE IN THE 'SPORTING DOG GROUP' IN 2003, THERE SHOULD SOON BE OTHER BOOKS AVAILABLE ABOUT THE BREED VIA THE AKC.

5 comments about The Working Retrievers: The Classic Book for the Training, Care, and Handling of Retrievers for Hunting and Field Trials.
- Good book I think. My grandson seemed happy to get it but I have not checked since he received it to see if it was helpful. Since it was a Christmas present I wish it had been hardback.
- The book starts out great and continues into valuable information. It is great information for any owner of a retriever.
- this was a good book with a mix of training for hunting and field trials.... if your interested in just training for hunting and dont want extra garbage thrown in, go with game dog
- This is one of the best books I have read about the labrador retriever. From start to finish this book is a good reference for the total labrador retriever experience. If you have a lab or or thinking about getting a lab, this is an excellent reference.
- A must read for anyone desiring a hunting companion and a friend for life. From the initial chapters, I felt I was having a conversation with a friend regarding how to properly train and care for a life long companion.

3 comments about Italian Greyhound (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- First, why did I read this book? Do I have an Italian Greyhound (aka IG or Iggys)? No. I am considering the breed in the future. I'm also writing a novel where one of the characters has an Iggy and does dog shows on the side.
This book is a very useful book on the subject of Italian Greyhounds. Objectively, I cannot find a problem with this book. Subjectively (or in my opinion which may not be yours), it did not sell me on the breed as other breed books I've read on other breeds (and the problem here may not be that the author, Dino Mazzanti, failed, but that the breed may not be right for me). Also, I found it to be the one most resembling a text book; the others were somewhat more fun to read.
Still, if you own or consider owning an Iggy, this is a very good book for you to have in your library. It has helped me know the breed a little better, which was my reason for reading it.

- In Australia there are few Italian Greyhounds so information was scant when I was quite decided on having one of these glorious dogs for myself. Of two books on the subject I found, this one was the source of answers to nearly all of my questions. The only few unanswered ones were those that no-one could have imagined, being solely related to the particular very individual surprises my new little chap occasionally threw at me - but we managed to work them out between us.
- It is a great source of information! Very well presented and to the point. We couldn't ask for more.

4 comments about How to Train Your Shetland Sheepdog (How To...(T.F.H. Publications)).
- I was disappointed in this book. It was a "read between the lines" kind of book. Was not helpful in training my dog at all.
- Agree with with other reviewer that this is a great resource for sheltie owners, or propsective owners. She's correct in providing the background to why Shelties aren't the breed for everyone, as they demand attention.
She provides needed tips on how to keep the Shelties in your life happy and you in turn happy with them! They do need to work and she provides training tips on doing just that. Info is provided on selection, stages of development, early puppy training, basic obedience, formal training, problem prevention and solutions, and advanced sports and activities. We have our two Shelties through obedience and now into agility and can vouch how much fun this breed truly is. This book will aid your enjoyment of this intelligent and loyal breed.
- This book had great information about the Sheltie. I felt it was quite helpful to me. It also had great pictures!!
- This is quite easily the most useful sheltie book that I own. Most books about shelties are slim volumes that talk about grooming, the breed history, and a little about temperment. This book dives right in to telling you how to housebreak your sheltie, how to train them to sit, heel, come and stay, and more. It covers a little about competing with shelties in obedience, agility, and herding, and has tons of wonderful pictures. It's full of great, practical, advice. If you're a new dog owner, you should really pick up this book and read it.

3 comments about French Bulldogs: Lightweights Littermates.
- There isn't much reading that goes into this book. Mostly pictures of frenchies with funny quips. There were several pictures that made me laugh out loud and many more that made me go "ohhhh how cute." I've looked at it several times since purchase and enjoy it every time.
- Absolutely adorable photos that you will enjoy looking at again and again.A 'must' if you love French Bulldog puppies.
- I purchased French Bulldogs: Lightweights Littermates and Dachshunds: Lightweights Littermates together, as gifts... I flipped through them prior to sending them off to their final recipient and was pleased to find that the photography and composition was appealing to my tastes. Sharon Montrose's composition skill is what sets these photos out from the rest. I like the bold imagery. And having tried to take pictures of my own pets, I know it's a VERY tough experience to have them pose... they're curious little creatures. My 1-star off of the review is pretty much for repetitiveness; the concept is fresh to begin with, but it gets boring, real fast.

- I got what I ordered in swift time. The product was in great condition and if there were more books I needed, i would order them from this person again. Thanks so much.
- This is a excellent book on the total care of the Bichon Frise. It is the only book necessary to answer all your questions. I'd definitely rate this book a 5+ ! It is a wonderfully illustrated hardback that you will want to keep as a reference. It offers great advice from littering to the elderly adult dog.

3 comments about American Eskimo Dogs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- One of the better books on breeds I've seen in a while - covers personality, quirks, training. I've found it very helpful in understanding my own half-Eskie puppy.
- This book is fun to read and has great information. The author is obviously an expert on the breed.
- Well written - easy to read and understand. This book has become my grandson's favorite since his new puppy came to live with him two months ago.
