5 comments about Your Border Collies Life : Your Complete Guide to Raising Your Pet from Puppy to Companion.

  1. Really good book about raising a Border Collie. It goes beyond the basics and gives examples from real-life Border Collie owners. One reviewer gave this book 3 stars and mentions that it's not specific enough about Border Collies but I disagree. To many people who have owned dogs before, the subjects will be familiar, if not "common sense". However, this book does take notice of specific Border Collie traits that as a first time Border Collie owner, I found very helpful.

  2. An essential book for every new border collie owner. This book covers all the basics: from puppy selection to rearing, from training to feeding. This IS your reference manual. Call it 'Border Collies for Dummies'. I am new to the breed, and these dogs truly are differernt. So glad to have found this book. Don't let other reviewers steer you away: this book is definitely about border collies. I recommend buying 2-3 books on border collies, since there will be differing perspectives and opinions on some matters. Also, different breeders/experts bring unique insights to raising and owning a border collie. Either The Ultimate Border Collie or The Working Border Collie is a good companion to this book.

  3. This is a well written, easy to read, guide. The authors are knowledgeable and expressive. Subject coverage is complete and this book is an excellent addition to one's BC library.

  4. This book is okay, but I was disappointed to see how much general dog information is included in the book. This information applies to all dogs, not just Border Collies. I've got many books to use as a resource for this type of general info. I am looking for Border Collie specific information and found only a small part of this book dedicated strictly to Border Collies. Very disappointing.

  5. If you have any questions on Border Collies, this is the book to have!I was very impressed. It is filled with all kinds of doggie tips & fun facts. This covers all aspects of this wonderful dog.It includes chapters on why you might want a Border Collie, preparing to bring you dog home, grooming, training, and for those of you who already have a Border Collie, curbing the herding instinct & correcting problems such as barking or biting. A wonderful book to have, I loved it.

A lot of Professional breeders encourage new owners to get this copy because it does give ALL you need to know on the new puppy trainning, heath, food, obedience trainning etc. Also talks about the older dog. 5 comments about So Your Dog's Not Lassie: Tips for Training Difficult Dogs and Independent Breeds.

  1. This book follows a similar training regimen and philosophy as the course my dog & I were just enrolled in locally. I purchased the book as a reminder and reinforcement to the training techniques "we" had learned in the class.

  2. This is a very good book for dogs who are stubborn and really don't have too much drive.

  3. This book has some good insights into independent breeds that will be helpful to new dog owners or those thinking of getting a dog. However, I do wish that the author provided more detailed steps related to actually training dogs, rather than anecdotal tips.

  4. I enjoyed reading this book about how to train the independent, lovable dogs that many owners own, and then come to my obedience class bewildered and frustrated on how to train to do even basic obedience commands. This book emphasized how to positively train dogs of any breed or temperment.
This was an easy read and not so much about theory about dog behavior, just great tips on how to get your dogs to be the great dog that you want them to be for everyday life and competition.

  5. This is a great book. I have several dogs, and the techniques for training work on them all. However, it is great for my independent pup, a Dogue de Bordeaux.

She was always interested in something else, shutting down when she had enough. Which she will still do, but now I have a way to impart information in a manner she learns while still keeping training sessions short enough to keep her interest!

3 comments about AnimalSign TO You. Imagine! Signing Is Not Just For Primates Anymore.

  1. "AnimalSign To You" By Sean Senechal has transformed my training of my own therapy dogs, as well as the service dogs I train. An example of how this book has transformed my training is that my dog's can now communicate to me their needs as my co-therapists whether it is that they need water, food, a toy, a break, space, quiet time etc. Communication is key to our relationships with our dogs and this book provides an easy to follow technique that will expand our ability to respect our dogs. I highly recommend it and suggest that it be mandatory reading for ALL dog trainers, behavioral consultants, veterinarians and anyone who shares their life with a dog!

I love this book! Thanks for providing specific tools to help open our eyes to communication with our dogs.

  2. This book "goes where no one else has gone" in the field of animal communication. Sean describes methods for teaching your companion (horses and dogs are featured here, but other cooperative species should be able to learn also) to use signs to communicate with you. Yes, you read correctly - the dog or horse uses sign language to ask questions, ask for things, and to respond to your conversation. This is so much more than our critters learning to follow directions or commands - this is the real communication many of us have longed for but have been unable to implement. It will take a good bit of patience to get the process started, but if my rather elderly sheltie is in any way typical, the first signs will quickly be followed with several more - it seems that some of these guys have just been waiting for us to get smart enough to understand them! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a pet, companion, service, or working animal. Sean's enthusiasm will rub off on you, and you and your companion will enjoy a new, higher level of communication. Did I mention that I really like the premise, as well as the book?

  3. Excellent for all people interested in canine capabilities, training and communication. We compared Senechal's book scientific content with that of other well founded reports and books and found close agreement on the concluisons and recommendations. The book is written at a level accessible to and can be used and understood by almost anyone from age 5 upwards. The author focuses on domestic horses and canines, a numerous population of intelligences who are in close day to day association with ordinary people, and capable in many cases to communicating to the people associated with them - not merely from people to non-human companions.
The author provides the extremely rare practical recommendations and procedures that even children (as well as parents and PH D candidate researchers) can use effectively to explore and confirm the observations made by the author.
The author's emotional excitement indicated in the book we eventually concluded indicated sincerity that did not in any way compromise the scientific significance of the reported findings and recommendations.

5 comments about Canine Colorado: Where to Go and What to Do with Your Dog.

  1. It not only tells you all the places you can take your pup, but it also tells you where you can NOT. Keeps you from having to wonder about places. List which 14ers dogs can handle, also info on having them on or off leash, does the hike have water or not. This book isn't just about taking your dog with you, its about having your dog be very happy and comfortable. Everything you need to know is here!

  2. This is a really great book detailing all the various canine activities you and your dog can do while in Colorado. I really like it! thanks!

  3. Sense of humor comes through and it is informative. Details of trails are mentioned in here that may not be mentioned anywhere else and are good to know so you are not surprised my them once you are out on the trail. I have not been able to hike any of the trails in the book yet but have a good idea where I am gonna start after reading.

  4. we are planning a trip to CO with our dog this summer, this book was helpful in picking out trails to hike on.
the location of the trails were hard to determine by this book alone but we managed to figure it out. all in all if you are going hiking with your dog in CO.- this book is helpful!

  5. This book is a MUST when traveling with your dog in Colorado. It gives you a great list of places to stay with your dog, according to the area you are in. If you don't want to take your pet along on a day trip it gives you places to drop your dog off.
If you are into hiking, then you will really love the trails she describes and points out in this book... if you're rather the kind of person who only goes on strolls, then that section won't help you a lot, though.

5 comments about First Aid for Dogs: What to do When Emergencies Happen.

  1. The book has lots of resourses for the dog lover to have handy, my only drawback is that the paper the book was printed on is almost like newsprint paper, very cheap and rips easily, I would suggest taking the book apart and putting the pages in page protectors and then into a binder

  2. This book is so basic it doesn't even tell you what to do if your dog has a vaccine reaction. It only says what your dog should be vaccinated against. I thought it was going to have more info. I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not live close to a vet.

  3. "First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---). It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs. Soon. Phone for advice.

It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over.

The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful.

By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought."

The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found nothing covered that is not also in Fogle's book.

  4. When my wife, Amy, and I bought Sparky, our pet pekinese, we picked up this book, though we hoped to never need it. It was so clearly written and easy to use that the entire family read it. When our oldest son, Ryan, used it to save Sparky from choking on peanut butter, we realized just how valuable the advice in this book is. Thank you, Bruce and Amanda, for saving our dog's life.

  5. i love this book! it tells me what to do when there is an emergencey

5 comments about Dogs: A Startling New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior & Evolution.

  1. My husband, a biology faculty member, brought home a review in the journal, _Science_, of the Coppingers' new revolutionary work, and after I read the review, I was intrigued, so Darling Doc brought the book home from University library. I ate it with laughter, outloud head nodding, and pondering brain wrinkles. I am a K9 trainer of 15 years, have competed nationally, currently have two K9 partners working with me and train others to train their K9s. We also do a sport called Schutzhund, designed as a breed qualifcation test for German Shepherd Dogs. GSDs are very wolflike in appearance, so dispelling the notion that they ARE domesticated wolves was not a topic I wanted to take on with my trainees....until Drs Coppinger. Now I understand my own gut reaction to the earlier theories of evolution wolf to dog. My husband teaches the Coppinger theory, as well, in his intro evolutionary biology course (freshpersons always love dogs and this is a great start, discussion wise and learning wise).

I have been using Drs Coppingers' ideas, information, and wisdom for about 2-3 years now with huge success given the way I train...use of presented genetic/biological characteristics, shape behavior to desired form, and voila! trained dog with little stress.

I cannot recommend this series of books highly enough. I have personally seen the results of application on 3 of my own competition dogs and many others. This book is for the layperson whose dog has the most important job of all, companionship and partnership, to the serious dog trainer and trainer of dog handlers.

  2. I had never heard a word about this book before I bought it, but I decided to buy precisely for the inflamed criticism I read from someone who was "horrified" at some of the things he had read in the book, things like "oh,this book is evil, they say horrible things about service dogs(dogs for the blind or deaf)or even pet dogs!!"I think I also read some criticism of someone from the AKC or similar...
I thought Ray & Lorna Coppinger MUST have treaded on some sensitive "paws"+ touched some controversial issues to recieve this kind of criticism...SO I decided to write this review because this book is a JEWEL of dog books. The minute I started reading it,I was fascinated + swept!!Its an amazing and UNIQUE book, full of information it would've been hard to find had not the book been written by biologists. That's probably what sets it aside from other dog books.TRUE:you have to keep in mind its is NOT the book that will tell you how to get your dog to stop chewing on the furniture or how to stop pulling on the leash. But I have already read it twice, and I find it one of the most fascinating books I have ever read in my whole life.I think their hypothesis on dog origin-dogs domesticating themselves by becoming scavengers is highly plausible, just watch dogs in different cities + terraces where people are eating!-and I agree 100% in most(almost all!)of issues the authors claim when they talk about service dogs, show dogs and pet dogs. They are professionals that have decades of experience teamed with scientific data, and real love for dogs.Ray Coppinger has trained + ran with sled dogs for 30 years, and he explains the biological conformation of sled dogs, and why wolves DO NOT make good sled runners(for example)and then he followed shepherd dogs in Europe while they where migrating with flocks of sheep. He explains the difference on how you train one puppy to watch the sheep + another one to herd the sheep, and how the different puppies get used to the different jobs, and how unique that is,considering the dog is a predator and the sheep are its prey,so what a paradox it is to have a predator protecting its prey!!Just read carefully and enjoy every word!I certainly did, and still do.

  3. Dogs seem so familiar and common that even without owning one, you think you know them. However, this book, written by a biologist specializing in animal behavior, shows us how little we understand dogs. Coppinger points out why the "descended from wolves" story doesn't explain dog behavior and why asserting alpha dominance doesn't mean the same things to dogs as it does to wolves. If you are interested in a scientific understanding of why dogs do what they do, this book will be truly eye-opening. The "critical period" of puppies and the predator behavioral sequences that explain herding vs. guarding dogs were most fascinating. Coppinger should have his own special on PBS.

  4. This book completely convinced me about the way dogs evolved. I really like it! I learned a lot from it. I liked the writers' style as well. Especially I liked the theory for village dog. If you come to Bulgaria, from where I am you'll see the same things authors describe for Mexico and Africa! Thank you, it was such an experience to read this book!

  5. Although the dog genome has been sequenced, this book informs us much abou the developmental genetics as well as the phenotype of the dog species.

  1. This is a great book for hiking with your dog on trails in the western and eastern parts of North Carolina. This book is a part of a series by Mountaineer books and gives great details about elevation, water, trail difficulty, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who walks their dog on trials and and in the outdoors. Plus all dogs love the trails anyway. Great pictures of dogs on the trails too!

5 comments about Dog-Friendly New England: A Traveler's Companion, Second Edition (Dog Friendly).

  1. I purchased this volume, unread, as a gift. Therefore, I cannot offer first-hand testimony (hence, my four stars). The recipient, however, vouches for its accuracy and usefulness.

  2. My wife and I wanted to travel with our Newfoundland dog. No small feat! I read the reviews of this book and decided to try it for myself. I have just returned from 8 days in Kennebunk, Kittery, Bar Harbr ME and Newport RI. The suggested places to stay were teriffic. Clean, roomy enough and very very hospitable. The places to eat and go were also uniformly great! While these were not 5 star resorts, the owners get 5 stars for opening their places to a gateful family! GET THIS BOOK!

  3. Dog-Friendly New England is a well-organized travel guide for those of us who can't think of travelling without our dog. The book is organized by region,
and each region is rated for its "dog-friendliness."
This book is fun to read when you're just trying to plan a New England trip.
It offers just the right amount of information, with capsule reviews of lodging establishments, restaurants, and attractions. You can probably plan your whole trip to New England based on the recommendations in this book.

  4. We took our two dogs to Canada and used this to navigate the northeast. Highly highly recommended.

  5. This is a great book, we have dogs and love to travel. This book gives us a wonderful list of places to stay and other information.
    Thank you,
    Jane
