3 comments about The Official Cat Codependents Handbook: For People Who Love Their Cats Too Much.

  1. This book is a total hoot. The anecdotes are wonderful but the illustrations make the book. The details on each page made me laugh aloud - and I'm dog (boxer) co-dependent. Yes, I would recommend the book and have given it as a gift to several cat friends (and the human staff). Not deep reading but life needs humor too!

  2. I picked up this book to browse through at an attorney's office while my husband and I were waiting to close on our home loan. Ten minutes is all the time I had to skim through it, however, that was enough to know that I must get this book for 2 family members for Christmas or birthday. It is truly a cat lover's book.

  3. I do love my cats too much but I don't need a non-cat person to tell me that. I couldn't quite put a finger on it at first until I realized the obvoious: Ronnie Sellers is not a cat person. That much I derived from the "about the author" page. He does not even profess to be a cat lover at all. This book is but a compilation of anecdotes from cat lovers from all over. Sellers says the idea of doing this book came from a cat person he met in a book shop. That woman should have been the proper author of this handbook. Jennifer Reinhardt could probably do it being a cat person herself. What remarkable talent! I found her illustrations funnier and more effective than the text that accompanied it. Each illustration captured what every cat owner (or cat owned human) has probably gone through. I give her illustrations five stars. I was thinking of returning this book but I decided to keep it anyway if only for Ms. Reinhardt's hilarious drawings.

  1. I bought this book for my mom since she has an aging dog. I read it before giving it to her and decided to get another one for myself. Even though I have house rabbits some of the recommendations still apply. If you love your pets, buy this book!

  2. This book is easy to read and explains common pet problems such as barking, incontinence and stomach problems. It is nice to know that simple remedies sometimes are the best.

2 comments about If Your Dog Could Talk.

  1. Dr. Bruce Fogle is my favorite animal behavioral author. I've read and reviewed books by the good doctor before and he always seems to provide me with a good deal of insight into my pets in a way that I can understand. If your dog could talk... is no exception.

The subtitle for this book is "A training guide for humans". Basically, this text is meant to teach us humans what our dogs are really thinking. Far too often, we infer human personality to our dogs' actions. For instance, we assume Puddles is peeing on the furniture because she's angry at us. The thought that she's in heat never enters our mind. Similarly, when Sparky jumps up at us when he greats us, we think he is being aggressive or showing his lack of training. Really, he just wants some regurgitated food like his Mommy used to provide (yuck!).

If you have a dog, know a dog, or are planning to get a dog buy this book. The insight you will gain will be invaluable. I guarantee you'll spend a lot more time enjoying your friend and a lot less time freaking out because you aren't sure what he or she is thinking.

  2. This Doctor writes well, knows dogs as a vet and dog owner and is a real researcher. He's much more reliable as a source of real information than those that make up their own guesses about why dog behavior occurs. When it isn't known, he says so. This is my first dog, and the books by Bruce Fogle are very informative. The other books, particularly "The Dogs Mind" delve into brain anatomy and genetics to explain dog behavior. They are so differant from us, and yet so similar to us, as he makes so clear.

5 comments about Twenty One Days to a Trained Dog (Fireside Books (Fireside)).

  1. This book came as described. It is a helpful book for a novice. It is more or less the same way I was taught to train dogs in the seventies. Tried and true although not without some physical B-moding. But if you have a strong minded pup and your new at this its a good easy back round book.

  2. This book addresses training issues simply and straightforward. I tried it with our 9 month old cairn terrier and it really works. I recommend it for any dog owner who wants to teach their dog manners in a kind fashion. Only thing is we don't believe in collars but use a harness instead and it still works just as well.

  3. It's an old book with techniques from the '70's (it's published in 1977). If you prefer a book with more positive reinforcements such as treats, petting, etc, I would recommend Train Your Dog - The Positive Gentle Method --it's better to visually see how to do it.

Also, the title made me curious, '21 Days to a Trained Dog' but looks like it would take longer than 21 days, unless you really train your dog every day, at least five times of 5-10 minutes per day (probably even more depending on your dog). If you want a book, besides the DVD I suggested, I'd recommend The Everything Dog Training and Tricks Book--yes, this one contains easy tricks too!

  4. Bought the book, was skeptical, and I turned out to be right. I couldn't teach my adult dog how to behave in 21 days unless I had all day every day to devote to it. It might work for some people, but not for me.

  5. I used this book, in conjunction with other training materials. It's useful, but I wouldn't rely on it as my sole training guide. I used it to get a basic idea of how to train my dog once we had passed the 8mo. mark and were basically doing OK.

5 comments about Book of the Bitch: A Complete Guide to Understanding and Caring for Bitches (New Edition).

  1. This book came in very handy. Was easy to read and understand. I have just had my first litter of pups and your book was spot on out of all the other books I have purchased.

  2. I have just started raising my English Mastiffs and Bullmastiffs and was worried this book would lean more towards the little dogs like most books. It was great! I had it right next to me when the time came for the puppies to come!

  3. A great book for breeders. Book is what it says... focuses on the care of your girl.

  4. This book is a bible for many serious dog breeders out there. When someone recently asked a group of people at a national dog show for recommendations on whelping books - we ALL had and suggested this one. With that being said, this is NOT a book about pregnancy and whelping ( although that is covered of course). This book is about the owning a bitch and all the things that go with it from purchasing the dog to medical problems to placing puppies. It is complete and detailed. I pull it off my shelf for any bitch concern for reference and it (and the kit that they suggest) has sat beside me with every litter I have ever whelped.

  5. Excellent reading; a must-have for beginners and useful to breeders too

4 comments about The New Yorker Book of Dog Cartoons.

  1. I guess part of the charm of the New Yorker cartoons is finding them as a 'breather' between the articles... might be nice as a coffee table, waiting room, or guest room book, but I don't expect to read it again, even though I'm a "dog person."

  2. Before discussing the cartoons (which are wonderful), let me warn you against the miniature paperback version. It is very small, the cartoons are hard to see, you need a magnifying glass for some, the reproduction quality is poor, and the paper is not good. Stick with the hardcover.

I have rated the book as the hardcover version. The only drawback I saw to the 101 cartoons was the lack of a witty introduction (like those in the cartoon books of the New Yorker for business and money).

In a spirit of self-disclosure, I must admit that I do not have a dog now . . . but I have had one in the past. Several of my friends have dogs, so I think I can properly evaluate the book from a dog lover's point of view.

The relationship between human and dog is an especially close one. The humor works well when it alludes to that. For example, in a wordless cartoon, a dog looks resentfully at a man reading a book entitled "How To Be Your Own Best Friend." Another one has a couple in bed with lots of dogs: "If you lie down with pugs, you wake up with pugs." In a third, a woman with two suitcases is seen leaving with the dog while a man inquires of the dog: "Et tu, Baxter?"

Dog-human reversals also work: A dog doctor examines a human and notes, "Well, your nose feels cold."

Sometimes the humor is aimed at the human, such as: A psychic tells a dog her/his fortune, "You will be going for a long walk."

Inevitably cats are part of the picture: Two dogs talking to each other spot a cat walking down the side walk, "Do you want to handle this, or should I?"

Sometimes dogs become just like people as in: A man walks down the street with a dog walking on hind legs holding onto his arm, "She never took to the leash."

What do dogs think of their humans? "They never pushed me. If I wanted to retrieve, shake hands or roll over, it was entirely up to me."

As someone who had a Sheltie, this one got to me: A sheep is leading lots of dogs in a herd, and a man says to another man, "I understand that in your country this thing is done quite differently."

Humor is a window onto our stalled beliefs that keep us from grasping our full potential of progress and joy from each day. Let these wonderful dog cartoons remind you of the potential in everything around you!

  3. I keep this book in my bathroom with some other fun books - I read it every time I'm in there, and I laugh over and over at the same cartoons. People always love going to the bathroom at my place because of it! :- ) Anyway, if you love woofers like I do AND enjoy the New Yorker sense o' humor, you must have this book!

  4. I could barely put it down, I just wanted to read "one more cartoon". Dog lovers like me would like it the most, but anyone would love it. My 11 year old daughter read it and liked it too!

1 comments about Guide to Search and Rescue Dogs.

  1. I have purchased several search and rescue books to guide my training, but this book was used the most during the initial trainings of my Alsatian Shepalute, Citara. I found it VERY helpful in getting my 8 week pup from curious, to knowledgeable about scent. I only wish this author would write a book for the handler to learn about GPS, human tracking, etc., that one must learn to become certified. Easy to read, easy to understand and accomplish tasks. I thoroughly enjoyed it and refer to it often.

1 comments about Norwich Terrier (Comprehensive Owners Guide) (Comprehensive Owners Guide).

  1. This book was recommended to me by my breeder as the "go to" book for Norwich Terriers. I found it well-illustrated and extremely informative. It covers topics such as the history of the breed, what to get prior to your puppy's arrival, training tips, and development benchmarks. Our Norwich is now 3 months old and we refer to it often. - CTM
