5 comments about The Allergy Solution for Dogs: Natural and Conventional Therapies to Ease Discomfort and Enhance Your Dog's Quality of Life (The Natural Vet).
- i very important book to help you figure out what ity is why your dog is chewing her/his opaws food and other things how to fixes
- I was looking for a book that would help SOLVE my problems with dogs and allergies - this book just gives examples of what to look for (is it or is it not allergies) and suggests seeing the vet. Been there, done that - was looking for more creative ideas than seeing the vet and putting them on steroids (the standard prescription). I will keep looking for something to resolve my dogs' allergies and skin issues
- I have a dog that has severe allergies and, unfortunately, is one of the 1/3 or less who have not seen significant success with allergy injections (after 2 years...sigh). But, Dr. Messonnier offers many types of therapies/treatments for dog's with skin problems/allergies. His writing is honest and direct--this book made me realize that nothing will completely "cure" the allergies--but can make my dog's life more comfortable. In addition, the author does state that most treatments may not be the "sole" form of treatment--that they have to be used in conjunction with several other treatments. Right now, my pup is trying some homeopathic remedies along with conventional ones. And, I am still trying. This little book is pretty comprehensive. It gives the WHYs along with the HOWs to treat. I disagree with the other reviewet that the author does not talk about treatment. Over half the book is on treatment. Recommended with those who struggle with the irritating and frustrating problem of canine skin allergies.
- While this book is great if you simply want to learn about what allerges are, it does not give advise on how to treat the problem yourself. It will help you to have an informed discussion about the topic with your vet, but if you are wanting to learn how to treat your animal or what suppliments to use, this is not the book for you.
- I write MacAnswers, a question/answer column for Great Scots Magazine, a publication for Scottish Terrier owners. The question I wanted to tackle for the September/October issue was about allergies. However, I was tempted to put that subject on the back burner since entire books can be written on allergies in dogs and how to control them. Fortunately, I found Dr. Messonnier's book The Allergy Solution for Dogs. This new book does indeed provide the solution for dog owners who are willing to invest more time and interest in solving their dog's discomfort than a monthly trip to the vet for a steroid injection. Dr. Messonnier's holistic approach to allergies makes sense, and I highly recommend this book to any dog owner who is dealing with the frustrations of a dog that itches and itches. Breeds the book lists which have an especially high incidence of atopic dermatitis, a genetic disease which predisposes dogs to skin allergies are: West Highland White Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Shar-peis, Scottish Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, Dalmatians, Pugs, Irish Setters, Boston Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, English Setters, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers and Belgian Tervurens.

5 comments about Livestock Protection Dogs: Selection, Care, and Training.
- Originally published in 1990, the authors have reviewed and added a few extra chapters to this industry standard title from Alpine Books. As always, with Alpine, the book packs a lot of information into an unexpectedly small package. The field of livestock protection dogs isn't particularly well served with titles, but it is also, in the form we see it today, rather a modern endeavour. The breeds discussed, of course, have a long heritage trialling back into the last two thousand years, but in those earlier days farmers and the general population lived very different lives. Now, the livestock protection dog has smaller ranges with boundaries defined by fences and quite often little daytime contact with their shepherds, compared to the past where ranges were huge, there were no fences, and the shepherds were within cooee.
This is a specialist title, naturally, and while I have never lived with or even contemplated a need for a working livestock protection dog, I have spent my life with dogs and also lived the duration on a farm with a number of species that have benefited from the modern livestock protection breeds.
The authors give an excellent review of the breeds in common use in Northern America, and those chapters are of great importance for the judges of the show world - I challenge you to at least attempt the photo quizzes on the breeds!
Advice on general puppy raising and training are fairly typical and sound, the advice for the specialist training and development of the specific protection dog could raise eyebrows, and be warned there is at least one technique that is banned by the Australian National Kennel Council discussed.
The advice on choosing a puppy and buyer are good strong general points any breeder or breed buyer would be wise to read. The authors have a refreshingly open way about dealing with inherited issues, of course they undertake many measures to reduce their own puppies chance to develop such diseases by screening and selective breeding practices, but all breeders know that is not a sure fire guarantee, and buyers and the affected dogs need to be protected.
One point I found of particular interest was the repeated reminder that livestock protection dogs take time to evolve into their full natural role, and an owner cannot expect full guarding duties to be undertaken until the pup is at least 18 months old. And, of course, these traits need to be nurtured.
What surprised me the most, how cute the livestock protection breed puppies were! There are lots of gorgeous cute photos, not what I expected from a working title!
What disappointed me the most, ahh, that is a result of my own experiences of farm animal husbandry, the condition of some of the livestock in the photos. The dogs look hale and hearty and well cared for, a few of the livestock were wanting in that respect.
This is an excellent title reviewing the breeds in use in North America, the current accepted training techniques, and a refreshing look at diet and nutrition for this specialist industry.
Breeds covered include: Akbash Dog, Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Kangal Dog, Caucasian Ovcharka, Great Pyrenees (Pyrenean Mountain Dog), Komondor, Kuvasz, Maremma Sheepdog, Polish Tatra Sheepdog, Slovakian Cuvac, Tibetan Mastiff, with mention of the Sarplaninac, Castro Laboreiro, Estrela Mountain Dog, Rafeiro do Alentejo, and Pyrenean Mastiff.
- Informative, well written book.
Good reference book to have around when owning an LGD.
- I bought this book to see if I could train my dog in livestock protection. Not! What I get from the book is that you have to buy the right breed, and they will do it instictively, there's not all that much you have to do to train them except expose them to livestock at the right age. However, the book is well written, so I enjoyed skimming through it. I have a neighbor who uses one of the recommended breeds to guard her kids, and I think that's such a great idea in these days when parents seem to have to be afraid of letting their kids stay even in the back yard.
- VERY GOOD BOOK,LITTLE CONFUSING LIVESTOCK PROTECTIONDOGS WHEN YOU CALL THE DOGS LGD LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN DOG.I REALY RECOMEND PEOPLE TO READ IT BEFORE TO GET THE DOG AND NOT AFTER LIKE ME. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO BUY IT WHEN YOU LIVE IN SPAIN AND I MISSED VERY MUCH A VERY OLD LGD BREED THE SPANISH MASTIFF-MASTIN ESPAÑOL THAT HAVE GUARDING THE SHEEP FROM WOLFS DURING HUNDREDS OF YEARS AND STILL DOING IT IN SPAIN BUT NOT KNOWN OUTSIDE SPAIN.I HOPE THEY WILL BE IN THE NEXT EDITION.TODAY YOU CAN EVEN FIND WEB-SITE IN ENGLISH AND IF YOU LIKE YOU CAN CONTACT ME.THE SPANISH MASTIFF IS NOT SO AGGRESIVE TO PEOPLE BUT VERY WACHFUL DURING NIGHT.MARGA
- From wolves hungering for sheep to foxes in the henhouse, ranchers and farmers have always had to deal with the problem of predators. The use of dogs as a front line of defense against predators has achieved even greater popularity with the rising trends prohibiting the use of poisons, traps, and guns. Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Livestock Protection Dogs: Selection, Care And Training, by Orysia Dawydiak and David E. Sims defines what constitutes a livestock protection dog; surveys the various dog breeds; provides key advice on puppy selection; addresses both the adolescent and mature dog; identifies specific behavioral probelms and their solutions, and more. If you are in need of a dog to protect your property and your livestock, Livestock Protection Dogs will prove to be invaluable reading.

5 comments about Manstopper!: Training a Canine Guardian.
- After reading this book, I came away with a better understanding of the canine mind in general and the canine protector specifically. The book was written in an easy to read and understand yet compelling way. The author not only gives a good look into how to train your canine guardian but also the reasons why you shouldn't. I would recommend it to anyone remotely interested in this subject and I plan on purchasing his obedience training books shortly.
- This book is a jumble of poorly thought out and untested idea's. The author uses bad examples to try and prove his points, but it isn't hard to see that he literally doesn't know what he's talking about.
It only sells because idiot "sic'em" dog trainers buy it.
- Although this book promises an engaging subject, the style of writing, less than exciting stories, and minute passages of actual training knowledge are enough to make one choose to read the tax codes over this waste of paper. The multiple interjected "stories" and comments about alledged events during training, detract from any useful information, which in and of itself is difficult to find. Very disappointing.
- I highly recommend this book in tandem with "Dog Logic". Even if you have zero interest in protection training (and let's be honest--even Joel says it's not something you do from a book!) this book gives valuable insight into how to think "associatively" like a dog does. It's great information to help identify where current problems may have cropped up from, and to help you think ahead to prevent improper associations in your training routine.
- "Manstopper!" is a must read if you are interested in protection work. Overall this book was a great read. Entertaining yet informative and what I enjoyed the most was the author's obvious love for dogs that surfaced in his work with them and in his writing. It was not a how to guide for training a killer, and anyone who claims they used it as such did not heed the advice given by the author.
Not only did he warn potential manstopper owners of the financial and moral responsinility of owning protection trained dogs, he also warns about training the wrong dog for this work. This is terribly important because most owners assume any German Shepherd, Rottie, or Doberman can do protection work. If I had not bought this book I may have made a big mistake and trained my German Shepherd mix for protection. His temperment was just not right for it but I never knew until I read this.

5 comments about The New Encyclopedia of The Dog.
- Not only are the pictures beautiful, but also very interesting context.
I enjoy reading it and get so many useful information for my dogs too.
- I think it is hard to find a good dog encyclopedia. That is why I would like to share some information this book contains. Chapter One: Historical Development of the Dog. Chapter Two: Dog's influence on humans. Chapter Three: A Dog's Biology. This chapter contains information for those interested in dogs design, structure, and movement. Chapter Four: A Dog's Lifecycle. Chapter Five: Domestic Dog Breeds. This is what sells the book. It has 375 breeds with excellent pictures. I want to emphasize the pictures because they have at least two pictures per breed. In on case the German Sheppard has 11 pictures. The book also has a good amount of the more uncommon dog breeds. Chapter Six: Caring for your Dog. It contains dog safety, health, feeding, nutrition, grooming, traveling, boarding, behavior, and equipment. Now that you have the general information on the book, I wanted to clarify that in the Domestic Dog Breeds section it is not deeply descriptive on each specific breed. If you were to ask my opinion on the book I would say if you aren't trying to get a lot of information on a specific breed or a lot of information on a certain subject than buy it! From what I was expecting I would rate it a 10.
- Great "coffee table" book , everyone who comes over to my house HAS to pick up this book & peruse through it......ALL making comments ,men & women alike , they LOVE the pictures , facts , etc. Would recommend for anyone who loves/likes dogs/animals , has children , has lots of friends who visit & need a "start-up" conversation , a visitor's "MUST" , surprising impact book......
- This book is a quick guide to all the dog breeds in the world. My husband and I refer to it frequently; for example, if we see a breed we're unfamiliar with we'll look it up in this book. Or if we meet a dog that is behaving in a certain way, we go to this book to learn what the typical behavior for that breed is. The photographs are straightforward and not overly styled. Yet the photographs are so professional that you really don't need a different book that may have lot's of "beauty" shots in it. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs in general, and who is interested in learning a little bit about all the specific breeds.
The last comment I'd like to add is that this book is really quite beautiful for a reference book. It's worth the price, and if you are a dog lover it will be in your library forever.
- I love this book. I knew what it was before buying it, as had borrowed it for a while before buying. If you love to look at the various breeds of dogs, or need some background on a variety of dog breeds, you will enjoy this. Tons of information on each breed, great photos, and a historical section that is fascinating. Also a good dog anatomy section.

3 comments about Chicken Soup for the Soul Celebrating Brothers and Sisters: Funnies and Favorites About Growing Up and Being Grown Up (Chicken Soup for the Soul).
- This is just one of many of the Chicken Soup books I have gotten from Amazon. It has always been a good experience. A good price, good communications on delivery, and the product arrives in excellent fashion. I love shopping with amazon whether in the "Soup" or out!
- Even when our brothers (or sisters) drive us crazy, there are always those special moments that make us laugh (or cry) and this book forces us to remember what they are. From the moment that these relationships are born, to the end (which is never really the end) and all of the special moments in between. This book has us celebrating the bond between brother's and sister's from the very first story!
- Since this was the first submission I made to the Chicken Soup series, I was delighted to learn that my little story, Easter Bloomers, would appear in this collection, and so was my "baby" brother. We're in the section called Golden Times, because my tale took place well over half a century ago.
When my copy arrived last week, I couldn't wait to read what others had to say about their brothers and sisters. I've been reading five or six stories each evening, and am nearly finished. I know there's some that think Chicken Soup stories are corny or cheesey...but I've reached a stage where pseudo-sophisticated, jaded, ironic, or sardonic commentary doesn't always do it for me, especially not at bedtime. This Chicken Soup collection is comfort food, just as advertised. This will be my favorite book, at least until they buy another of my stories!

5 comments about Smarter Than You Think: A Revolutionary Approach to Teaching and Understanding Your Dog in Just a Few Hours.
- Paul Loeb and Suzanne Hlavacek have written a book that should be read by anyone who owns a dog or is thinking about owning a dog. Their common sense approach to interacting with your dog will make you say, "Now, why didn't I think of that?" The idea of making your dog a real member of the family, instead of a family posession will appeal to any dog lover. The techniques described in this book are easy to follow and will lead to a wonderful friendship between you and your dog. If you truly believe that dogs are "a man's best friend" then this book will teach you how to make the most of that wonderful friendship. This book is well written, in layman's terms for all to enjoy. The stories and observations that Mr. Loeb and Ms. Hlavacek share with the reader will make you laugh out loud. I truly enjoyed this book and I know that my dog will enjoy it as well!!
- The reviewers that have failed with the magic touch method of recall must not have been doing it correctly. We used it with our ten week old Jack Russell and she picked it up after two tries. It worked so well with her, we tried it on our older male, who rarely came back when called when he was on a mission. It worked immediatly. It never failed us in parks or anywhere there was distractions. After a few weeks, we didn't even have to throw anything, our dogs knew what we wanted. My mother-in-law owns a doberman, and one day while she was working in the front yard a man jogged by and the doberman started to chase him. She called to her to come back, with no luck. On instinct, she threw her garden gloves at the dog, who stopped, sniffed the gloves and trotted happily back. My mother-in-law had not read this book at that time. The people who have no luck with this unique method are doing something wrong.
I also agree with a lot of the recommended ways to get through to you dog. A mother dog does not continually tell her puppies "No". She bites them. A slap on the rump is not cruel. It is no different from how a mother dog gains respect from her puppies. Over all, this book is full of good, sound advice that makes the reader think of their dogs as family members.
- We got Leo as a rescue boxer. He was appx 2 years old. My dad gave me this book, and it has worked wonderfully. Took Leo less than a day to understand the concept of my throwing something (my keys) at him. I dont have to throw anything anymore. I walk Leo about 3 miles a day without a leash. He stays right beside of me and when I say "wait", he stops at the curb and waits for me to tell him it's ok to go across the street. You do have to remember what the book says.. to give them a few seconds to decide what they are going to do. Leo loves to chase squirrels, but that's a no-no when we go for our walk. If he starts to tear off after a squirrel, I say "Leo" and he stops abruptly, hesitates about 3 seconds, then comes right back to me. No yelling, no discipline at all. This book works on PRAISE, not punishment, and it works great! I cant say enough good things about it.
- We met Loeb in New York City (he happens to live one block from us) and are fortunate enough to have retained him to train our dog, Louie. Previous to his training, Louie would bark and cry so loud in the morning that we received multiple complaints from our building only after owning him a few days (if you live in NYC, you'll know that angering the co-op board is not something you want to do). Louie would bite at our rugs, ruined our bedroom door and would pull us when we walked him to the point that owning a dog was simply not enjoyable.
We read Paul's book for tips on raising and training a dog. His methods may seem harsh to those who have not read his book, however those who have read and truly understand what Loeb is saying will see immediate results in the behavior of their dog. Loeb is more than an animal trainer, he is an animal behaviorist and scientist- he truly understands the psychology behind owning and training a dog.
After only ONE lesson from Paul, Louie stopped barking when we left the house, ceased chewing on our rugs and our door and stays next to us when we walk down the street at night. This is phenomenal progress, as the distractions and hustle of NYC can be quite overbearing for a puppy. Paul has made it enjoyable to own a dog!
Do not doubt Loeb's methods. You must gain a rapport with your dog and make him realize that you are his family and provider before you can allow him to run freely with other dogs. If you follow his techniques, your dog's allegiance will be to you; he will love you and be your buddy more-so than he would if you did not follow these techniques. Paul Loeb has saved our lives, our furniture, our apartment and our puppy. We could not be happier.
- Wow! I cannot imagine why anyone would give this book a good review. Many of the methods taought in this book are just plain ridiculous, while others are quite inhumane. Tough love is one thing; putting a match up my dog's rear end to motivate it to go to the bathroom is another. Yikes! Believe me, I am the "bad cop" with our dog (my husband is the pushover) and I could not stomach using these techniques.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems that the author of this book is a controlling individual in general and enjoys the power he has over his canine companions.

5 comments about Training Your Rottweiler (Training Your Dog Series).
- I am thoroughly impressed and completely satisfied with this book. I bought it based on customer reviews and they were right. It is very good at specifically describing many of the nuances of Rottweilers. Don't let anyone tell you... "all breeds are the same it's just the way you train them." Most rotts have similar tendencies. This book was very helpful in preparing me for each stage.
- Have had rotties for the last 25 years and this time I wanted to use a different approach in preparing for our new rottweiler female pup. This book has certainly identified areas one should be aware off with regards to puppy-proofing the home as well as getting the pups attention from an early stage onwards. Many Rottweiler specific traits are discussed and I have found to be extremely helpful. This book is easy reading and a terrific resource for any serious Rottweiler owner.
- This book has very brief and to the point chapters. I have owned dogs for over 20 years but this book gave good insight to why particular behaviors occur and how to modify the behavior. This book offers practical training and obediance methods that even beginner dog owners can follow and understand.
- Do you want to have a puddle or a Rottweiler?
I've bought a few basic books about Rottweiler to teach my dog the basics. I am very happy to say that I have a wonderful puddle, not a Rottweiler! He is a wonderful companion dog (for old ladies), not aggressive, very sociable,...etc. Do not "abuse" your dog, don't kick him, don't make him be scared of you...etc. Really? I wouldn't recommend the "operant conditioning" as described in these books, unless you want a really stupid dog with no balls at all.
- is agreat book have a lot of ideas on how to train your rottweiler but i think it should have more information on this breed
