1. I have been teaching obedience for many years. This book really opens up a whole new world for you. The book is very detailed,descriptive, and written for everyone. A real must have in every dog owners home!



2. Dr. Volhard & Ms. Fisher have once again collaborated on a useful, motivational, and entertaining handbook for dog obedience. This time they focus on the instructor. They give detailed advise on the hows and whys of taking a group of handlers through a successful session. The fundamental point of the handbook is that training a dog is one thing - but, teaching a class how to train their dogs is quite different. Remarkably well written and entertaining: a MUST for all training directors and should be in all dog club and dog school libraries.

1. This was a very good book with alot of names. It didn't however, have very many imaginative or unusual names. For the Price it was perfect!

1. Someone bought me this book on kennel management and as I've read the others on the market, at first glance I thought it would be of no interest and sadly a waste of their money. But I enjoyed it. You don't read over 200 pages written by a man with such experience and not learn something. It's my opinion that this isn't a high profile reference book for the already initiated, wanting factual A-Z information. (Jim Krack writes an amazing book if you want this.) Nor is it for the new-age, big bucks commercial operator-to-be, dealing with dogs as if they are plastic houseplants. It would more likely be of use to the upgrading hobbyist or novice wanting to know the fundamental arts and craft of kennel operating, and most likely will be starting with a very modest one from home. Mario shares his knowledge through his experience, examples and testimonies. His skill is not bombarding the novice with too much information and jargon. Instead he picks on a few key issues that only someone who has served (I quote from the profile page) " an extensive apprenticeship" knows that if you don't get right, or cut corners in the beginning, you'll spend forever putting it right. Some of his examples get multiple concepts over very well to someone who has not experienced them before. I like this book because it is well written and from his personal perspective and experiences. It's a stepping-stone that the novice can build upon. And also, I bet he didn't just blindly list products to use from a mailing list, but because he tried them or knew someone they had worked for. His simple odor control worked perfectly for me, while others have failed. The type of building panels he recommended for the small operator, proved to be just right. This in itself paid for the book. It's my recommendation that the simplicity of this book is not its weakness, but its joy, because only truly experienced people can simplify complicated issues so that beginners may begin to learn.



2. This book might be good as a simple review for children interested in kennels. I found it to be very simplistic and filled with a lot of "common sense" information. If you are really interested in reading it, check your local library, it is just not worth the money.



3. A major disappointment for the serious kennel builder. Its only merit, perhaps, is as a starting point for further research in kennel design and management. It has very, very few useful tips or practical advice a kennel builder needs to make educated decisions when constructing or modifying a kennel. Management suggestions are simplistic at best and leave the reader with more questions than answers. Provides almost no advice in the most practical and crucial areas such as what kinds of paint and construction materials are best suited for kennels, or how to effectively heat and cool, structure a drainage system, etc. Although there are less than a handful of books on this subject, steer clear or consider this book a starting point for more research. I just completed a huge boarding and dog training facility and didn't find one truly helpful tip from this book.

1. While the author's test may not be 100% accurate, her premise is that one should be VERY careful in adopting dogs in order not to get an aggressive dog. This is something that most other adoption books gloss over. The author is concerned that many agencies seeking to have dogs adopted are more concerned with getting the dog a home than in protecting the adopting owner. Why adopt trouble?
   
   I've had 12 dogs in my life and am thinking of adopting when my 12 year old dog dies. I've been reading as many books as I can about adopting dogs and adult dog behavior and this is one of the best that I've found.



2. Dogs need our help. Thousands die every day simply because they do not have a home. If you are involved in fostering, breed rescue or simply love dogs, read this book to learn about how to evaluate dog temperament. If you are looking to adopt a dog, this book will teach a scientifically proven effective method of evaluating a dog's personality.



3. I bought two books on dog adoption, this book being one of them. I really didn't get my money's worth from this book. The tests that the author advised just are not practical. If people did what she said, no shelter dogs would ever get adopted. In general, other books on dog adoption have a lot more practical advice than this one. This book was not a total loss, I did learn a few things from it. But, all in all, it was not worth my money.



4. What a great book! It is very well written, authoritative without being condescending, easy to understand without being simplistic and sometimes downright funny. I started reading at random and just could not put it down. Recommended for anybody who wants to adopt a dog - even if you do not believe in or want to try the test described in the second part of the book, there is a wealth of information on the first 100 pages alone.
   I feel I have a much, much better chance now of finding the "Love of my life" dog we are all hoping for.



5. As a parent of 3 who is looking into getting a dog and has seen a very strong anti-family/anti-child bias among shelter and rescue groups, I really appreciate this book. Her section on reading the internet ads was especially enlightening, since all shelters within a decent driving distance from me do most of their advertising on Petfinder. If we do decide to adopt a dog, I feel much more confident not only evaluating the dog, but evaluating the shelter.

1. I have been doing dog rescue for 18 years, and am always looking for imformative dog books. Although this book is written for children, it has some interesting facts that I was not aware of. It is easy reading and has some great tips. I can hardly wait until "How To Speak Cat" is released!

1. Love this book! My Toy Fox Terrier's grandmother is the older cover dog and his breeder is shown inside the book. I've had other TFT's but this book is very informative!



2. Great Book! Everything you ever wanted to know about Fox Terriers. It's like an encyclopedia of the Fox Terrier. I continue to refer to it for helpful information.



3. This was a very well put together book with lots of good information. My only dissapointment is that it seemed a bit too generic - not breed specific. Its as if the words "toy fox terrier" were inserted with the same info used with other dogs and other books.

1. It is the end of first day of the 2008 hunting season here in Maine. I have a full game bag, a tired Wirehaired Pointing Griffon asleep at my feet, and a copy of Joan Bailey's latest book, "How to Have the Best Trained Gun Dog" in hand. I would not have any of the above had I not read and followed to the letter the wisdom contained Joan's first book, "How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves". This new companion volume picks up right where the first book left off and like the first volume, is a simple, to the point guide to dog training. Both are a must for any serious hunter or for anyone who wants a well behaved dog in the field and around the house. Joan has dedicated a lifetime to judging, traing and breeding fine versatile hunting dogs and her insight into canine behavior is remarkable. I recommend this new book with the same enthusiasm that I have recommended her previous work. Buy it. Buy them both. Your dog will thank you in many ways.
