1. This book has a brisk, no nonsense attitude to encourage positive training. I like the easy references (and cross references), so that you can go directly to the behavior you're interested in right away, and also the insightful explanations. A very useful addition to the shelf. They do often proceed from the starting point and may not be able to solve deeply ingrained problems (and of course I disagree with their assertion that shelter dogs are a bad bet; quite the opposite!), but I find it helpful to consult a variety of books when sizing up a situation, and these writers present some original ideas and creative solutions (without clickers or "training" collars).

I would highly recommend it to any dog lover who wants some greater insight into their dog's behavior and how to positively alter it with gentleness and understanding.

4. If you have a dog who is already set in his "ways" this book is a waste of time. The emphasis is on how to prevent your dog from developing bad behavior. Some of the tips are not practical at all and did not work on my dog. The beginning of the book WAS informative, however, and might be useful to a puppy owner or buyer.

1. Dr. Gates uses anecdotes and philosophy to convey the lessons he has learned from 35 years of practice. His techniques are natural but too often overlooked these days. A must read for all puppy owners.



2. Dr. Gates does a fantastic job of showing new puppy parents how to teach their puppy the concepts of trust and respect, which leads to self-control. What a unique and refreshing concept! He as great stories, and illustrations that bring his experiences to life and made it easy for my wife and I to apply these skills to our puppy. A fast read with incredibly valuable information. A must have investment in your relationship with your new family member.

1. This is a kind of book you'd want to take with you to work, and read a story on your break and at lunch. The stories are short, some funny such as the one where much researching was done to buy a pup and it happened the pup picked the owner instead. Some are sad. All are real. I have a lab, and have had other dogs. I identify with all the dogs I've had with this book. If you read this book away from your dog, you'll just want to go home, hug them all and thank them for being them.



2. Being a labrador retriever owner since 1997, I was toucbed at the authors depiction of the way an animal can become so much a part of an individual's life. The book spoke of the hardships of training a lab puppy, to the struggles of dealing with the loss of an old friend. Any lab owner can agree, most of the stories found in this particular book, their lab has done at one time or another. In this book a labrador is more than just a companion. Great Book! I would recommend to all lab owners..



3. A rewarding and wonderful book of tales that will touch anyone who loves dogs. Every tale will touch you with memories of a Labrador Retriever you once had or bring closer to your Labrador pal that you now share your heart with. a must gift for anyone who owns a Labrador Retriever!



4. I had the priviledge of reviewing the material in this book prior to it's publication. If you love Labrador Retrievers, this book is for you. It will make you laugh; it will make you cry; it will make you get down on the floor with your Lab and give him or her a big hug and a kiss! Walt, John and Terry are all to be commended on an extrordinary compilation.



5. John Arrington and Walt Zientek have touched the hearts of those who share Labrador related e-mail lists for quite a while! Their love of the Labrador Retriever is evident in every word and they have the amazing talent of making the reader feel each story.

   Everyone who has or had a pet can relate to the stories, essays and illustrations (Terry Albert has excelled). This is a must read! (Please Note: Kleenex are a necessary accessory!)

1. While the book does have some valuable information in it, I feel the author spent far too much time focusing on specific breeders and dogs. It is more of a "Who's Who" in the Lhasa world. Unless you are researching old breeders or lines..I would not recommend this book. I only found 4 out of 20 chapters helpful. A more beneficial book for new Lhasa owners would be Lhasa Lore by Sally Ann Helf (unfortunately out of print), or A New Owner's Guide to Lhasa Apsos by Nancy Plunkett.



2. THIS BOOK IS THE FINEST COMPILATION OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THIS BREED. IT IS OBVIOUSLY THE RESULT OF YEARS OF RESEARCH MOTIVATED BY A LOVE OF THIS UNIQUE BREED.

1. I read this story over and over as a young girl and I saved my well-worn copy to pass along to my kids. I just recently read Clarence The TV Dog to my 8 year-old son and he enjoyed it just as much as I had. Clarence was a real dog and the book is about the fun little adventures he had in his home and neighborhood with his owners, a young boy and girl and their mother. The author wrote on the back, "All the adventures in the book are ones that either have happened to Clarence or might very well happen to him tomorrow." A sequel called "Clarence Goes to Town" is also very enjoyable.
