1 comments about Good Dog Journal: A Record Keeper of Your Pet.

  1. "Good Dog" is a journal for your dog. The pages are mostly lined and feature different sections for you to record various information about your dog. Most of the sections are silly, though - for example, why would I want to record every single visit to the vet in such a cute (and expensive) album? Other useless entries include a medication checklist, an address book, and shopping lists. I'm sorry, but I scribble my shopping lists on scrap paper - I don't pay for an album to record them in!

The journal itself is just adorable, with cute sketches, backgrounds, and colors. There's a ribbon affixed to the back cover that you can use to keep the album closed. There are also a few "frames" for small photos. The album's very small in size, about as large as a small paperback book (although it is hardcover). The pages are spiral bound.

The feline version of "Good Dog Journal" is "Pretty Kitty Journal", also by Victoria Roberts and H. D. R. Campbell. The format is identical, although "Pretty Kitty" isn't quite as charming as "Good Dog". Unfortunately, the appealing visual designs are wasted on two useless books.

Bottom line: there are better animal journals out there, so don't waste your money!

1 comments about Zelda Rules On Love: A Zelda Wisdom Book.

  1. This gorgeous and brilliant 60 pound bull dog is enormously entertaining and funny. In this third book of her series, Zelda spouts her philosphy on love and life, with hilarious vignettes and outrageous costumes that will tickle the reader's fancy! Loved it, a real page turner. The perfect gift book, for almost any occasion. Arlene Millman, author of BOOMERANG - A MIRACLE TRILOGY (The tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier).

2 comments about The Biology and Conservation of Wild Canids.

  1. The book has three parts. The first part consists of several overview chapters on canid society, infectious diseases, and similar general topics. The final section is a single chapter on conservation, which provides a very strong summary though it fails to break new ground. The middle part, and the bulk of the book, is a series of case studies of canids, both well-known and unfamiliar.

Some of these case studies (i.e., those on red and gray wolves, or island foxes) focus intensively on management issues. Other case studies seek basic information about poorly-known species (i.e., bat-eared foxes), or seek to make some purely-biological point (i.e., that Finnish racoon dogs are becoming a separate species from Japanese racoon dogs). A few other chapters straddle the biological and management perspectives, extending moderate bodies of scientific knowledge and discussing management problems briefly (i.e., Ethiopian wolves).

Like the focus, the quality of these chapters varies widely. It seems that the editors never really got control of their contributors and were unable to force a conservation or management perspective on everyone. This is especially ironic since one of the co-editors was a co-author of one of the chapters that fits least well.

As a result, the book will be of limited interest to the general reader (and I cannot say how interesting it is to the specialist). The chapters on wolves are interesting but the material in them is available elsewhere because these species are so well known.

  2. If you want to learn about canids all over the world this is the book for you. Not only is it a credible resource, it has up to date information about conservation issues and research currently being conducted. Overall, a great scientific resource that cuts to the chase and gives you the facts.

1 comments about Dogs' Letters to Santa.

  1. I got this book from a friend and I love her for it but as a book goes it's not much of a book. How many `please Santa, can you get my owner to walk me more/feed me more/ like me more than the cat' can you stand to read?
Well, quite a few actually because I read each one but I won't be reading them again. I am amazed that somebody can make money with stuff like this! I wish my friend had spent her money on a different book or donated it to the local shelter. It's a Christmas time coffee table book: a cute idea but no substance. I think you can find another, better book of this kind to give to a dog lover or better yet, make a donation to the local SPCA in their name instead.
