  1. This is a wonderful book and uses only positive methods for training your dog. All of Ms. Scott's training games are great fun and it's amazing how quickly dogs learn the skills these games are designed to teach. This book will really help you train your dog to become a cherised family member.

  2. Cindy has trained both of my dogs, with the same techniques and humor as she shows in her book. I bought two of the books to give as presents to new puppy owners. Her techniques work! Taz was a terror when we got him at the pound. But with Cindy's help, he has aced his obedience class and enjoyed multiple agility classes. Daisy has always been a sweet dog, and after passing the Canine Good Citizen Class, is a Delta Society Therapy Dog.
    Thank you, Cindy!

  3. Wow! What a fun book! I probably learned more from this "enlightened training" book than from any normal ordinary "dog training" book and was entertained while doing so. I got so much out of this because it was humorous and fun while very educational. My dogs are learning a new way of training and love it and it is fun for the whole family. Thank you for the fun new view of training our best friends.

  4. Cindy has transformed the old style of dog training into a fresh approach simply by taking a new perspective: working with your dog should be fun, not some arduous task! Become enlightened and see your dog as a willing partner who wants to enjoy your time together. You can establish a hassle-free relationship with your dog and have your friends asking, how did you do that?

5 comments about Dog Training: The Gentle Modern Method.

  1. I bought and read this book about 2 weeks before my Queensland Heeler came home. Within 2 days (he was 7 weeks old at the time) he was house trained and would "come" when we called him. Now at 8 weeks I began teaching him to "sit" and "drop". It literally only took about 5 minutes. I truly believe this is the best method of training a dog. I don't feel bad because I'm choking him or yelling or anything. He wants to do the exercises he's been trained to do. As a society we have been misinformed to think we have to train or dogs using archaic, somewhat violent means. I encourage everyone to at least try this method and if it works for you, pass it on to any pet owner you know. We can make happier, less aggressive dogs.

  2. I highly recommend this book. It was very useful to me. Each exercise includes pictures to show exactly how it should look, including hand signals. There were several obedience areas where my dog was not responding to the way my obedience instructor was teaching the commands, and some areas that weren't covered. I tried using the methods in the book, and she responded very quickly and learned the exercises. This book is great for people who don't want to use harsh methods or who have sensitive dogs. This book is also very useful for training puppies, where only positive reinforcement should be used. The step-by-step directions make it good for beginners.

  4. I really enjoyed this book as it shared my feelings of repect and care for animals. Especially our most domesticated friend the dog. I have used these methods offered in this book and know that they work.I would really love to know if there is an e-mail address for the auther of this book or his Kintala Club as I live in New Zealand and there is not a strong level of support offered here for this kind of practise. Particularly the socalising before tweleve weeks and immunisation. I would recommand this book to anyone considering a puppy or dog and to read it first so they know and understand their responsiblities as a dog owner and for the best they cangive their dog. Yours Helen from New Zealand.

  5. David Weston's method of dog training follows right along in the modern tradition of "operant conditioning," which I had not heard of before reading this book. Therefore it was not a previous bias which caused me to discount the method as completely inappropriate to dog training! A dog is not a lab rat, to be "shaped" unwittingly by the presence or absence of food. It is disrespectful to your dog to assume so. However, if all you want is the behavior and you don't care about the rapport, or if you have a particularly sensitive dog that doesn't respond well to "traditional" methods, this book is an easy to follow manual of how to make it at least appear obedient.

    It's also a great gift.

  2. This book is an especially unique addition to any dog lover's library. The photos beautifully illustrate diverse aspects of the human-dog bond. I received it as a gift, and immediately purchased copies for my dog loving friends!

  5. There are few bonds as close as the one between man - or woman - and dog. What creatures are as cherished as our canine companions? More than just man's best friend, the dog has become an honorary, and honored, member of our society. To celebrate this unique relationship, A THOUSAND HOUNDS brings together over 400 photographs of dogs, many of which have rarely been seen.

Spanning more than 150 years (1839 to present), this book chronicles the evolving relationship between man and dog. Included are no-nonsense 19th century working dogs, adventuring dogs, dogs of war, police dogs, fictional "superdogs" like Rin-Tin-Tin and Lassie, beloved family dogs, and, to some, the pinnacle of canine achievement: the ultra-bred and groomed show dog.

Intellectually and visually stimulating, A THOUSAND HOUNDS is far more than just a collection of dog pictures. This unique book features the work of hundreds of world-famous photographers and artists (from Picasso to Man Ray, Ralph Gibson to Eric Fischl, Wolfgang Tillmans to David Salle, and of course, Elliott Erwitt and William Wegman), dozens of witty and moving quotes about dogs, and captivating essays on the presence of dogs in the history of photography and their relation to man.

  1. This book was a great read. It wasn't just about animals but also the author. Recommended.

  2. I ordered these two copies of "Tales From the Bark Side" as gifts for friends who are dog lovers, as am I. I so thoroughly enjoyed the book that I just HAD to share it!! As I said in the title--PURE PLEASURE. The book has great humor, and very moving poignancy--I can't wait to read it again--just as soon as our new puppy lets me sit down for more than five minutes!

  3. I absolutely LOVE "Tails From the Barkside"! I first heard about it on GreatPets.com, bought the book, and have read it several times since then. Tails is a wonderful collection of stories from the real life training experiences of Kilcommons and Wilson. A must read!

  4. These stories are great insights into dogs and their personalities. I admit, James Herriot is still my favorite author when it comes to telling a tale. Looking beyond the lack of narrative richness, it's still a great, easy read. I finished this book in two days. It was funny, heart-wrenching, educational, and highly entertaining.

  5. Tails From the Bark Side, by Sarah Wilson and Brian Kilcommons is a great look at the human animal bond, especially the funny parts! Tails from the Bark Side has laugh out loud funny stories of dogs and humans and the funny quirks about both. I rate this book among the top dog stories I've ever read. ...

5 comments about Sweetie : Tantalizing Tips from a Furry Fashionista.

  1. The idea of a dog venturing forth from humble beginnings (about as humble as they come) into the spotlight - who doesn't love a rags to riches story? The illustrations are as charming as the story she tells; Sweetie's insights into the fashion world are original (a dog's point of view, of course!) - as are many of her beauty tips. A very entertaining and enjoyable read.

  2. From pet-lovers to fashion-lovers to anyone who loves a good laugh, Sweetie charms them all. Her voice is brought to life by Mark Welsh's wonderfully witty and insightful writing, while Rubin Toledo's drawings sing with color and pizzazz!
I read the book with my daughter first, and then had to keep picking it up in the evenings for more. (When do we get to see "Sweetie...The Movie?!")
Sweetie is a truly engaging character. I, for one, will be buying a copy for everyone on my gift list this holiday!

  3. Very clever ,very New York. Wonderful little snippets of wisdom from our little sister...Of a girl we can all relate to...a sweet little broad navigating the perils of the beyond, beyond NY glam scene..A little bottom line for all us nervous femmes in these terrible times...good giggle is what we all can do with. Universally humorous..Some calssic lines I intend to steal..My French friends love her..

  4. I literally stole this book from an 8 year old! This book was so darn cute I couldn't stop laughing and reading passages aloud to my husband. I will buy several copies and of course return the one to the little girl.
I would love to have a steak and martini with Sweetie.
I will keep up with Mark Welsh's work from now on.
    Sweetie, you go girl!

  5. Sweetie is the funniest book that I have ever read about the fashion industry! Sweetie tells all there is to know about being a huge star, like the importance of wearing clanky jewelry so that you fans will know when you are arriving. Sweetie even lets you read the steamy details of her past love affairs, not to mention and insider view of her dressing rooms around the globe! She's a busy dog alright , and dont go looking for any deep meaningful writing but Sweeetie's book is sure to give you a double dose of all the fun, fabulous, hyjinx and hysterics that fashion industry has to offer!
