5 comments about Pomeranian: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. This is a very helpful book and I would recommend it to anyone that is getting a new pomeranian.

  2. This is a great book to describe the basics of living with your pom. The author has a friendly tone and seems to have a lot of experience with poms of her own. It really reviews everything you need to know...training, feeding, grooming...the works! I just adopted a two year old dog and this book is great because it doesn't focus on the puppy years only. It addresses that time well, but gives wonderful overall advice. Great buy!

  3. this book was a great informational. i had to borrow it from the library before b/c i bought another book which was horrible. this book gives you step by step insructions on how to take care of your pom.

  4. I own two pomerananians and have several books on them. This book is one of the best. The writer gives great information on them.

  5. This book was the most outstanding book i have ever read on Pomeranians..It has helped me and my daughter go through the tough times when we got our new puppy. If u are looking on buying a POMERANIAN i suggest you buy this book! Thanks POM

5 comments about My Lead Dog Was A Lesbian: Mushing Across Alaska in the Iditarod--the World's Most Grueling Race.

  1. Every once in a while we go up to Ely, MN, and spend a day or so dogsledding. So, prior to this year's trip, I bought a few books on the Iditarod and mushing in general.

With the Iditarod in the news right now (especially with the legally blind woman competing this year) I figured I'd learn more about that particular grueling race. This was the first book I got, as the title caught my eye and the reviews were good.

About 1/3 the way into the book, the jumping around between the various mushers and their stories started to get annoying. While I was interested in the various stories, interspersing them in a sort of "time line" format along with O'Donoghue's own experiences was not something I, myself, particularly enjoyed. There were other things about his writing style that seemed to indicate the book was written for his associates and the people with whom he raced, rather than the public at large. As a reporter, it made sense that O'Donoghue would toss in some short human interest stories of the other mushers. But he also had a few nicknames and references that seemed to be for the benefit of those in the know.

Then I made the mistake of picking up Gary Paulsen's Winterdance before I had finished this one. What a huge difference!

I reluctantly came back to My Lead Dog Was A Lesbian and am still trying to finish it. After Paulsen, it just isn't the same. Not to mention his overuse of the word "lesbian" as an adjective, almost as if he felt it necessary to justify the title of the book. OK, the dog was "confused". We get that. But halfway through the book I started noticing he was referring to her as "the little lesbian" or "the lesbian" more often than anything else (like "my lead dog" or her name), and once that sort of thing is noticed, you know, it then just sort of jumps off the page at you. So it's gotten to the point where, when I read that description of his lead dog my eyes roll and I tend to flinch. Gahhh not another one!

I'm still stuck somewhere in the middle of the Iditarod with "O'D" and just can't quite bring myself to pick it back up. He doesn't convey anywhere near the appreciation or love of the dogs that Paulsen does, and it is, after all, all about the dogs. Or should be.

If you want objective, dry facts and figures, this is your book. If you want the soul of mushing, read Paulsen.

  2. I thought the book was well written - I read at every opportunity, even my lunch time at work! I'm from South Africa, where winter day temperatures hover around 15 deg C (59 F) and I've seen snow maybe twice in my life, but this story was written in such a way that I'm burning to try mushing myself! Imagine that! I've ordered other books on mushing which, I'm hoping, will convince me that I shouldn't be so crazy.

Well worth the read and keep it on your bookshelf for future reading.

  3. This is far from the best-written non-fiction book I have ever read. The journalist's experience writing in the shorter form of articles shows through in the disjointed feel of much of the narrative. This is still well worth the read if you have any interest in Alaska, mushing, or man's working relationship with dogs. Even without those interests you may well find the book enjoyable.
At the beginning I was first overcome by the romantic notion of this amazing race, and reading through his preparations deluded myself with the fantasy of doing such a thing myself (a real joke considering how much I dislike even camping). Once the race gets underway, my most common thought was "these people are ...insane!" It was terrific and I really wanted to know how it would turn out for each and every one of them.
The title can provide for some fun too. The other day I overheard from another room Child A ask, "What is a lesbian?" Child B responded, "It is a type of dog." After much laughter I had to call them in and correct it, although I had fun imagining the kind of conversation this could cause in public at one point if they were both left with their misconception.
Since you are on this page, and reading these reviews, you are probably interested enough in the subject that reading this book would be a positive experience for you.

  4. Of the Iditarod books I've read this has to rank as one of the best. Apparently a good sense of humor and a high appreciation of irony is a necessary component of being a Musher.

  5. A dynamite read even for someone who has never lived north of Key West, who has never even heard of the Iditarod, and who hates dogs. Adds credence to the fact that I never read fiction..life is a lot stranger, and a lot more exciting

5 comments about The Working Pit Bull.

  1. If you want to learn a lot about the American pit bull terrier, this is the book to pick up.

This book talks about every aspect of the breed, starting with its history as a hunting and bull handling dog. It touches on related breeds, common "pit bull myths," and the modern American pit bull terrier today. It also talks about the specifics of acquiring and keeping a pit bull, without turning into a generic book on dogs or dog care.

The book is also full of nice color pictures (vintage and modern) of a wide variety of dogs. The photos alone are worth the price of the book in my opinion.

It was written by the incomparable Dianne Jessup (check out her website at [...] ) If you're interested in pit bull dogs you will enjoy this book!

  2. The was a very informative book all in all. I thought it would be better though. It talks about the history of the pit bull..the real history not many people know. That's about all it is worth. The information on the different sports was ok. my pet peeves on the book were mostly about the fact that the author had to make other breeds look bad in order to make the pit bull look good the pit bulls looks good all on it's own with out hashing other breeds.

1.I was hoping at some point the pictures would show alot more pictures of pit bulls with natural ears. some of the crops she showed where porrly done and way to short.

    2. Someone who is trying to help pit bulls suggest to buy a dog and not adopt. Not all dogs from shelters are bead and not all people give up they dogs because they are bad dogs.

    3. While colbys dogs may be great now she likes to rehash the fact that they come from great fighting lines. She is trying to tell people her dogs are great but that they are fighters as well.

    4. she also tells you to buy a dog that is in-bred. She says dog bred to different parents that are not related are mongrels.

it was a good book but could have been better.

  3. It was a gift I made to a Friend who loves Pit Bulls and He was so happy about the book. He told me this book is superb and He using it as a personal guide.

  4. I agree with the review by T. Roberts (tei321). I was hoping for pictures of family pit bulls, playing, sleeping, having fun, looking beautiful and cute, illustrating the loving and playful aspects of these dogs. But almost all of the pictures in the book are of pedigreed pit bulls in show poses, and far too many have cropped ears, I'm assuming for show purposes. So many pit bulls are waiting for homes in shelters and in foster care, many of these being euthanized when their time runs out, but the author emphasizes choosing a dog from a breeder instead of adopting. She even recommends against adopting shelter pit bulls in one chapter, on the grounds that something must be wrong with a dog who has been surrendered to a shelter. Dogs are surrendered to shelters because of a mismatch between dog and owner, but a shelter dog can be perfect for a different owner, as my shelter pit (7 years old when adopted) demonstrates. I would expect that someone who has worked in animal control would know this. The glorification of the Colby family's breeding of fighting pit bulls is shocking, considering what problems dogfighting and overpopulation are. Maybe an updated version of the book would not be so positive about pit bull breeding.

  5. This book is a must read! I teach in a school in a low socio-economic area. Not surprisingly, pit bull myths are common here, and many children own or want one. I constantly lend this book to students, and it really opens their eyes. This is just the most informative, interesting book on the breed out there. I appreciate that Diane Jessup doesn't weigh down the language with a lot of dog training jargon, and the action photos keep even my struggling readers interested. I reference the book countless times in discussions with people who do not understand the breed (especially those that only think they do).

2 comments about Badge on My Collar: A Chronicle of Courageous Canines.

  1. Although Marilyn Jeffers Walton is not a search and rescue or a police dog handler, she has spent many years attending regional police dog trials. At the trials, she met and became friends with many K-9 handlers who shared stories about their dogs with her. This, coupled with her love of German Shepherd Dogs sparked her research into the lives that they lead. She wrote Badge on My Collar hoping to enlighten the general public as well as animal shelters.
Badge on My Collar gives the reader a unique collection of true stories about police dogs, one search and rescue dog and one military dog. What I liked about this book is that it shows the reader the successes and failures that police K-9 handlers experience in their training and selection of dogs. Without getting overly dramatic or emotional, Ms. Walton lets us share the joy, pride and grief that the handlers experience living and working with their dogs. She has selected specific incidents for each dog in order to show the reader how the dogs work and the dangers they face. The message about how valuable these dogs are to the police departments comes across in each story.
Ms. Walton is an award winning children's book writer and this was evident in her writing style for this book. She was able to present the material in a direct, simple and informative manner, making it easy for the young reader to enjoy. Although some of the stories have a sad ending, Ms. Walton handles it in a way that does not traumatize the reader. The main message that comes through is the depth of the bond that exists between working dogs and their handlers. This is a fun and informative book for the entire family.

  2. I read this book in one sitting. I share this author's love for animals and found myself caught up in these stories of canine heroism and courage. A heart warming book that anyone who loves animals will enjoy. (And if you don't love animals, read it anyway; you will when you are done).

  1. Ms. Freeman is a true Rottweiler person and helped develop and contribute to the breed. This book is not only details the development of the Rottweiler, but also gives a great wealth of information for raising, breeding and training the breed. I consider this book a MUST READ for anyone looking for an excellent reference on Rottweilers.

  2. If you are seriously considering making the Rottweiler your next dog, this book contains information on the how the breed started and Muriel gives you a background on bloodlines of todays breed ring competitors. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the breed. Learn from books before contacting a breeder so that you know what to expect. The Rottweiler is a BIG responsibility and you owe it to yourself to learn more about this wonderful dog. You won't be disappointed!

5 comments about Rosie: A Visiting Dog's Story.

  1. Providing comfort through the use of pet therapy is an up and coming phenomena. This book goes through the training and preparation of a pet therapy dog and owner is a fun way that children will love. Dogs can help alleviate lonliness to the senior citizen, entertainment to the hospitialized child and comfort to the hurting. This book is an entertaining way of showing how the loving nature of dogs can be utilized to help human beings. Everybody wins, the dog, the handler and the client! Thank you for this wonderful book, that is a great way to show adults as well as children all about pet therapy. My kudos to the author.

  2. Hurray for Rosie! Coco the Love Dog salutes the work you do and understands why you share your doggie love.

  3. This is a terrific little book about how a woman helped her dog learn to help others feel better. The photographs are really good and the short narrations are well written. Rosie encourages and comforts elderly and young people. Rosie is a Tibetan Terrier. I think I want a Rosie of my own!

  4. Wonderful true story about Rosie, a Tibetan Terrier who lives in New York City with the author, Stephanie Calmenson.Rosie is trained as a special working dog who is also lovable, kind and compassionate. This special story about Rosie's life conveys to children the value of companionship, trust and care for those who are either ill, eldery or less fortunate than others.Rosie's training is explained on a level children will understand and enjoy. The photographs are genuine and authentic.Read this one to your children or have them read it- they will want to know more about dogs such as Rosie.A wonderful book for those with dogs, a real experience for those without.

4 comments about Fabulous Pugs.

  1. This is a cute book, probably mostly enjoyable for people who already love pugs! Stephen Urbauer

  2. This book is written with comedic flair and terrific photography. Yes, the outfits are well-made and well-researched, but the book's charm lies in the wonderful humor of this delightfully pan-faced, patient Pug, Charlie, acting out the larger-than-life historical roles her "mom" has designed for her. First Pug on the Moon? Queen Victoriapug? Andy Warholpug? Marilyn Monroepug? Charlie portrays them all with a dignity totally at odds with her fabulously-dressed situation.

You don't have to like Pugs or dogs to enjoy this book -- just bring your appreciation of the absurd, and you will be entertained!

  3. This is a must-have for any pug-lover, especially pug lovers who love to buy their pugs outfits! Lisa creates all of her pug Charlie's outfits from scratch, which is amazing considering the elaborate nature of some of the costumes. The photos in this collection are fantastic, and Charlie is a great model. She is equally adept at tackling Marilyn Monroe or Genghis Khan! Even non-pug lovers will marvel at the beautiful photos and costumes and at the sweetness of Charlie.

  4. For anyone with a love all Pugs - this is a great picture book !

2 comments about Australian Shepherd: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. A great deal of information for all stages of your Aussie and lovely pictures. Includes information about diseases, insurance, poisons, collars, grooming, breed standards, puppy proofing and body charts.

  2. While many of the suggestions and explanations about this wonderful breed are consistent with other research documents I've read, I felt like there should've been more "meat" or text included on certain topics. In particular obedience training, feeding and the like.

Australian Shepherds are *extremely* intelligent dogs (far more so than most labs or retrievers for example - though I certainly love those breeds as well (and own one)). For this reason they have very specific training requirements if both owner and dog are ultimately to have a good relationship. However this book gave equally thin treatment to this topic as it does for others of less importance. I sort of get the impression the author said "well we can only dedicate x pages per topic on average" and then stuck to that, instead of allowing more pages for the really important stuff and skimming the more obvious or less critical topics.

This book *will* teach you something you didn't know most likely, but it will also leave you wanting more in-depth info. I'd give it 3.5 if I could....

Friendly Advice: while I was well aware of the breed's characteristics before buying, please DO NOT let your kids (or your own conscience) talk you into buying one of these dogs just because you've seen them catching frisbees on the beach or because they're so cute. If you do not have the time and space to dedicate to this dog every single day, you will wind up with a frustrated and destructive dog. Shepherds need to keep their minds going and their bodies going as often as possible; they are not couch potatoes like many other breeds of similar temperment and looks.

Also be sure to check your local Australian Shepherd rescue for available dogs before going to a breeder. You'd be amazed how many great dogs are out there already looking for homes. Don't contribute to the dog overbreeding problem in this country (more than 15 million dogs are euthanized every year in the US).
