2 comments about Emerging Therapies: Using Herbs and Nutraceuticals for Small Animals.
- I've been waiting anxiously for a book on herbs and nutritional supplements that has some science behind it. It seems like most of authors just quote each other. This one actually looks at the evidence for these supplements, and in doing so, blazes new territory in alternative veterinary medicine. I think it's a highly useful reference for veterinarians and dog owners alike!
- This thin volume is intended as an introduction to herbs and nutraceuticals for veterinary professionals who are interested in incorporating some alternative treatment methods into their small animal practice. Dr. Wynn begins with the basic philosophy of holistic medicine and explains how to do a holistic evaluation. She then provides basic sample treatment protocols using herbs and nutraceuticals for a variety of ailments. She tends to err on the conservative side, not recommending, for instance, alternative treatments for heartworm disease although alternative heartworm treatments are available and often effective.
The most interesting parts of the book are the two materia medicas: one for nutraceutical supplements and one for herbs. While not very comprehensive, it's nice to have fully referenced material available in an area where there are many unsubstantiated claims. Each entry in the materia medica describes the supplement's actions, use, contraindications, potential adverse effects, and dosage. All in all, a nonessential but nice addition to the library of the holistic animal health professional or the veterinary practitioner seeking to incorporate some alternative treatment methods.

5 comments about Lightweights.
- This book is one of the cutest I have seen! The puppies are sooooo adorable, and the photography is superb! A wonderful gift for kids, a baby shower, birthdays, Valentine's Day, any day! It would also be great as a "coffee-table" book. Seems a little over-priced for how thin it is, but I am still tempted to buy a copy for myself... I loved it. :o)
- Cute...adorable...creative...fun! Love this book...you will too:)
- I was already a fan of Montrose's work (Dogtionary and Cationary), but she really tipped the scales with LIGHTWEIGHTS! This is the most adorable dog book I have EVER seen--I know, I have them all. The dogs are cute--puppies actually--and the colors and scales too sweet for words. Run, don't walk, to buy this book!!
- The title is all wrong: Yes, these pooches are lightweights (in the sense that they weigh so very little), but canine conisueers will find Sharon Montrose's photos weighing in with lots
of cute, captivating charm. This slim volume features color and sepia-toned portraits of puppies snapped during the first weeks of their lives ...most keeping company with vintage or antique scales ... and all of them are simply the cat's meow! There's Lola, an 8 week-old tea cup Chihuahua, weighing in at 14 ounces. There' Scooter and Lily, a 22-pound, 6-ounce snoozing Weimaraner combo whose faces might possibly send William Wegman heading for a phone book. And there's Lurch, a 14-pound, 8-ounce brindle Dane, who, even at 8 weeks, promises to grow (and quickly) into a precious gentle giant. Montrose is not only gifted behind the lens, but in front as well, since she has managed to capture the spirits and spunk of each pampered pooch.
- What can one say...Some of the best photos of puppies I have seen. And, I am not just saying that because I own "Ruby" the rat terrier. (Ruby is now Angel) Sharon must have the patience of a saint because I have been trying to get Angel's sister Carly who is 4 weeks old to hold still for a nice picture since she was born and it is no easy task. All the photos are beautiful and show the best of each pup. I was amazed by the weight differences between the breeds...how can a boxer be 1 lb at 4 weeks and a rat terrier 2 and 1/2 lbs? This is a great gift book for dog lovers!!! Oh yeah, I don't have any photos of Angel at 3 weeks, so it is great to have them "published"!!!

2 comments about The Simple Guide to Getting Active With Your Dog (Simple Guide to...).
- This book was a finalist for best general book for 2002 Maxwell Awards awarded by the Dog Writers Association of America. This is the best book out there on activities with dogs.
- I really love this book. I got it to give my Malamute something to do. The author covers weightpulling, skijoring, and backpacking. She also covers sports like agility and Rally-O. There's so many options here that you're sure to find something to do with your dog whether it's frisbee, tracking, or earthdog. You must get this book!

1 comments about Puppy Parenting.
- I liked this book because it talks about different methods you can use to solve problems, and it also talks about puppy behavior so you know what to expect and why your puppy acts the way he does. I learned a lot from reading this book and was able to correct several problems I was having with my new pup.

5 comments about All About Agility (Howell Reference Books).
- All About Agility is tastefully written book which is exactly as the title says... all about agility! This book covers the basics, like the origin and history of agility, along with the organizations, titles, and rules. It focuses on AKC, UKC, and USDAA mainly, but mentions NADAC in passing.
After a history lesson and the rules of engagement, the author goes on to a section on teaching the individual obstacles. I was a little disappointed in the "bare-bones" guide, but like I said it is a great introduction to the sport. She thoroughly covers each obstacle, how to teach it, and how to solve problems you may encounter. She tends to present only her method and not mention other possibilities (as in the weaves or teeter) but her methods are safe and effective so it isn't too much of a concern. Good Points for this book: · "Training Tips from the Pros" section is really helpful, especially for the beginner · Includes a guide to events and your first trial · Also introduces a few other ideas for fun with fido, such as flyball and therapy work · Has a VERY complete listing of organizations, agility equipment suppliers, agility/flyball clubs, and therapy dog associations in the US and Canada Flaws/negative comments: · In general, a little surfacy. There is no talk of training for excellence and drilling. It's very "just-for-fun" oriented · NO sequence work is introduced. That would be fine if there was a sequel, but there isn't! · No course diagrams, proofing diagrams, or handling/body cue examples. · Really needs an instructor's guidance to achieve any training This book is not the best, but by far not the worst! It is a great introduction for those who are thinking about agility as a "fun thing to do" or a new hobby. It clearly outlines the basics for those with absolutely no experience and is an encouragement to join a class and learn more! It is sure to hook some new agility fanatics!
- This book is wonderfull for people just getting started in the sport of agility. It covers everything you need to know like the different organizations, training, and basicaly everything you need to know before realy thinking about doing agility with Beau. This book is great,it answered all of my questions and I'm sure it'll answer all of yours.
- This book will help you find agility clubs in your state, tell you all the equipment that is used. It is a book for begginers not very much for older experenced people.
- This book is perfect for those who are interested in learning more about Agility. It includes information that pretains to people just getting into the sport as well as tips for those who are already involved. It's detailed descriptions make it easy to follow even if one doesn't know the inside lingo. The exercises and training techniques worked wonders on my dog and I'm sure it will help you too!
- This is a nice book for someone looking to get into agility. Lots of good photos, and information on the obstacles, the various organizations, etc. Good information on preparing to go to your first show. Not much here for the experienced competitor.

5 comments about The New Beagle: A Dog for All Seasons.
- This book was recommended to me before we purchased our Beagle. I found the book very informative and helpful. After reading this book, we were more than prepared for our new companion and knew exactly what to expect. I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about purchasing a Beagle or for new owners!
- This book is wonderfully written, while it is not geared to a beagle owner in the "pet" set of mind. It is a wonderful tool and a must have for breeders, serious enthusiasts, exhibitors, etc.... My only suggestion would be for the pictures to be in color vs. black and white.
- I was unhappy with this book. There is a lot of information if you are a breeder or somebody who wants show your dog. Our beagles are pets, however. We have no interest in showing them. Most of the information in the book seemed to be targeted at people who are raising beagles to show. I was looking for a book that would teach me about the dog but also give me a lot of general information: health issues, concerns, training, etc. My other complaint is that the pictures are old & black & white. ..., I expect to at least get clear, sharp color pictures which add more to the detail or point which is being referenced to or explained by the picture.
- Without a doubt the best book on dogs of any breed, and a must for every Beagler. Comprehensive and authoritative, giving you an expert's view on breeding, grooming, training, showing and loving your Beagle. The only bad thing is that other breed enthusiasts don't have anything like it. But then, they don't have Beagles either.
Pay special attention to the section on distinguished pedigrees. It helped me find one of the top beagle breeders in the country and eventually get a great dog from them.
- This book is an excellent comprehensive work about the technical aspects of beagle care. The sections on breeding, ailments and general health care are covered in clear, crisp detail; the technical information that was once privy to vets, breeders and other groups is now accessible to all with an interest in this lively, intelligent little hound.
This work is a compliment to the intelligence of its readers; it gives good, in-depth information without lagging or losing pace. The photographs are superb and this is certainly something that will either pique one's interest in beagles or for those who own beagles, appreciate their lively, spirited little hounds all the more.

5 comments about The Book of the Bulldog.
- This book is great for history of the breed, telling of previous bulldogs, but it is a little outdated. The latest reference I think I found was 1983 I think. However, it is a great read and has a wealth of information for Bulldog lovers like myself.
BV from Merrimack Valley Kennels
- A Very good book about the breed, though it is outdated but still has all the info you need
- This is a good book if you are looking for the history of the bulldog. It also has alot of information on different lines and breedings of champion show dogs. There are chapters dealing with bulldogs in different countries as well as their champions form Mexico to Russia.
I was looking for a pet owners book and this book left me wanting for more especially with health issues. The book was written in 1985 so it is slightly outdated. However one bulldog website said it was a must for any serious bulldog owner. I have mine and hope to use it someday.
- This book is excellent if you mostly want a coffee table book about show dogs and the "elite" owners and breeders. The history is interesting and many of the pictures delightful.
For the average owner who wants advice and information for raising and caring for the average bulldog, the book is minimally helpful, in my opinion. No more than a third of the book contains any practical advice at all, and most of that has to do with show dogs. At most, parts of four or five of the eighteen chapters contain advice useful for ordinary owners--and some of that, like the advice on nutrition, seems woefully dated, while a fair bit has nothing to do with bulldogs in particular and amounts to common pet-owner sense. (Like anybody of normal intelligence doesn't know to take a snake-bitten dog to the vet, for instance.) I can't say that I found answers to more than one or two of my many questions about owning a bulldog. I'd never have bought this book in a bookstore, where I would have seen quickly that it didn't contain what I was looking for. Still, if I'd paid ten or twelve dollars for the book, I'd have been disappointed not to find what I had expected, but content with the enjoyable parts. At ... dollars, I consider the book a seriously bad value for me, an average owner.
- I thought the book had some interesting things about the bulldog but I thought it was just to outdated. The pictures were nice but mostly in black in white. To be honest when I received the book I was disappointed.
