5 comments about Canine Epilepsy: An Owner's Guide to Living With and Without Seizures.
- I was disappointed in the book as a whole. Coming from working at a vet clinic as a certified veterinary technician I was looking for a book to tell owners about who had epileptic dogs. I thought this book was not owner friendly and would only confuse pet owners. Having my own epileptic dog gives me insight to their concerns and fears. I think that overall this book will confuse owners and make them question their veterinarians, when they need to have complete faith that the vet is choosing the right combo for their pets. While the idea was good, I would not recommend this book.
- This book was very easy to read and understand. If your dog has just been diagnosed with Epilepsy this book is a good source of information to help you better understand the disease and how to deal with it.
- This is a very informative book, the only one on the subject I have been able to find. The initial section on diet seemed over long and complicated but the rest of the book I found very helpful. It is distressing to see your dog have a seizure but I found the content encouraging and felt comforted that the condition can be managed without resort to drugs. Some of the tips I have started to use.
- My older dog began having seizures, other than this problem she is a healthy girl. I ordered this book when she was hospitalized for a cluster. I read the book as soon as it arrived and found it unbelievably helpful. There is life with seizures and this book helped me learn how to deal with and prevent them. Great book. Knowledge is power and I feel like I have a handle on this now.
- In July of 2005, we rescued two dogs that were 9 years old. They were a brother and sister team and couldn't be separated. We fell in love with them immediately. Two weeks afer bringing them home, the male began having the most intense grand mal seizures that I have ever seen. We put him on medication and it slowed the number of seizures but had no effect on the intensity.
I began looking on the internet to see what information I could find and there it was "An Owner's Guide to living with or without seizures". It took me several months to go through the book, as I found it difficult to understand the relationships between all the parts of the body, hormones, etc. However, it got me extremely interested in a natural food diet and alternative therapies.
It took another month or so to do more research and then actually put the natural food diet into place. Now, after 6 weeks of feeding natural foods to both dogs, the male has seizures that sometimes aren't recognizeable. They are mild and the duration is less than a minute.
The purpose of this narration is that if it weren't for Caroline Levin's book and love for animals, our dog would still be suffering with grand mal seizures, not to mention my husband and I and his sibling. Not only that, but their skin is so soft, whereas it was always rather brittle before.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs help with canine epilepsy and were as frustrated as we were. Thank you so much for the time that it took you to research this disease and offer your knowledge to us. It truly was a "godsend".

1 comments about Chihuahua (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- I love this book! It has a really good history section and very nice photos, even one of a fennec fox, a theorized relative of the chi.
The only section that is missing from this book is a chapter on breeding, but for the pet owner this book has it all. There is even a section at back to put a photo of you dog and record other important info.
The health section is reasonably through, and even shows photos a many common problems along with what to do to treat them. Has a good chart on diseases and what causes them, however does not mention some other problems like hypoglycemia, hrdrocephalus, collapsing trachea, patellar luxation, pyometra and cryptorchidism. However this info is in lots of other chi books and info can readily be found online. A must have for ever chi owner in my opinion!

5 comments about The Basset Hound Owner's Surival Guide (Your Happy Healthy Pet Guides).
- If you are looking for a how-to book on training your Basset hound to behave like a "good dog", you probably won't like this book. However, if you are looking for a book that tells you the peculiarities of the Basset breed, or tells you surprising things to expect with a Basset, or tells you about life with a Basset, then this book is everything you want/need to know. Bassets are called "clowns" for a reason ... well, actually, for many reasons! And most of those reasons are included in this book. If you are a finicky housekeeper, or if you think that everything should have its place (and you weren't thinking it should be on a shelf right below ceiling level), you may not see the humor in Bassets. If you get upset by clothing disappearing out of the clothes hamper and down the throat of a Basset (and out a different route), you may not see the humor in Bassets. If you want a dog who will walk beside you and not pay attention to all the wonderful sights and smells in the grass, you may not see the humor in Bassets. But if you enjoy a good laugh, especially if you are fortunate enough to be owned by one of these wonderful creatures, then this book deserves to be in your library where it can be enjoyed over and over again.
- I enjoyed this book, but don't feel it was worth what I paid for it. Buy it used or go get it from the library. There is a good amount of information in the book and someone may feel it is worth every cent. It is entertaining, but the price I paid left me wondering why.
- Being Dad or Mom to a Basset Hound isn't a job, it's a Vocation. It takes a special person to endure the quirks of this loveable breed. I've found THE BASSET HOUND OWNER'S SURVIVAL GUIDE to be an indispensable guide to help me find the rewards in the midst of the challenges.
The book is not really a step-by-step resource for daily Basset care (although it does offer much good advice); instead, its strong suit is a collection of anecdotes and observations that describe the personalities of Bassets and those who love them. I've found great "ah, your hound does that too?" comfort in the stories in this book, which are written with a sometimes laugh-out-loud sense of humor.
Anyone who knows and admires the breed will find much to please, inform, and entertain in this book, and it should be required reading for all who are considering inviting a Basset into home and heart.
- HilarIous!! I laughed through the entire book. This is not a care & training book. It's more like comical insite on Basset behavior and antics from Basset Hound owners. Definitely a MUST READ for Basset owners to be. It gives you the true low-down on what to expect (and not to expect) from your Basset. If you don't find this book laugh worthy then perhaps owning a Basset isn't for you.
- The author obviously finds the behavior of Bassets endearing and it shows in her writing. Not so much filled with tips on how to get a Basset to behave (maybe our dog read the book and is just being contrary) - but more so with tips on how an owner can endure (and even enjoy) a Basset's uniqueness.

5 comments about Standard Schnauzer (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).
- Great book. 166 pages , over 200 photos and illustrations. International in scope.
As a Standard schnauzer owner/operator for 20 years, I consider the best book Ive seen re:SS.
- I found this book to be a valuable source of relevant schnauzer information.
- Very presentable book with excellent color photos. The training section is also very good. The constant advertising of the Nylabone (chew toys) however, is quite irritating. Also, the book tends to generalize quite a bit and presumes that you have a puppy instead of an older dog. The health care section makes no mention of health problems specific to Schnauzers such as hip dysplasia and cysts and recommends you take your dog to the Vet for virtually every ailment. Save your money and read the internet if you want info. Or you can have my copy.
- We are getting a Standard next year, and I thought I knew everything about this breed until I read this book. Very informative, and the pictures are great!! I am very pleased with this book and I would tell anyone considering this wonderful breed to definitly get this book!!
- Anyone interested in learning more about Standard Schnauzers MUST get this book. It is informative, well written and has some great glossy colour photos of those wonderful Standard Schnauzers.

2 comments about About Tracking Dog Training: Creating a Problem Solving Partnership.
- This book is well written and fills a needed gap in canine tracking books.
The writer uses a down-to-earth, sympathetic approach to the sport of tracking and I highly recommend it.
Dot Parsons
- I purchased this book to assist me with my quest to put a Versility title on my Cardigan. Tracking is a difficult trial to get into in my state so one wants to be prepared as possible. I found Ms. Mueller's book to be well written, easy to follow and inspirational. The author covers working both small and large dogs on the tracks which has not always been covered in other books I've read. My smaller dog has his own way of doing things and it's nice that this was acknowledged in her book. The author neither "talks down" to the reader or "over the head" of an inexperienced handler. She covers all aspects of tracking well and includes her own experiences to give credibility to the writing. Versitility Title. . . here we come! 5 comments about DogPerfect, Second Edition.
- This is one of the best dog-training books I've read. I've had my Border Collie for 2 1/2 years and I've read several books, online articles, and even spoke with two different dog behaviorists and still managed to learn several things from Ms. Hodgson's book.
Scold the cookies, not the dog - what a great idea. Your dog gets the idea that the cookies are a bad thing & he should just leave them alone lest he be associated with them. He doesn't want you to think HE is bad, too!
Love it.
Thank you, Ms. Hodgson - I'm happy to recommend your book to everyone I know who needs some advice on living with their canine companions.
- I bought this book years ago, back in 1995, in it's first edition. Back then, I had a Siberian Husky who was more than difficult to train. I read the book and followed Sarah's advice on how to train my hard-headed and over-active pupil. It worked! Not only did it work, but it worked very well! The techniques in this book only took about 15-30 minutes of my time each day.
In the end, I was able to effectively train my dog, especially house train, in no time! I borrowed out the book and I never saw it again! I was overjoyed to see Sarah has released a second edition. I am getting a new puppy next month, and this is my book. I even found the first edition and bought that one as well! Thanks Sarah.
- WOW WOW WOW WOW. This Is an incredible book, extremly useful, and funny. It really explains the dog's point of view, and how silly people can look sometimes.-don't take that personbally. If you have a dog or you are a dog trainer this book is a must!
- Years ago when I worked in the grooming department of a pet store, we sold cases of the first edition of this book to customers who would ask us why their dogs "misbehaved." I thought that book was the best book ever written for dog owners. The second edition is much better.
The author speaks simply and with the compassion and knowledge that comes from her years of experience with dogs and their people. This book enables people to communicate effectively with the dogs in the household, so there is mutual understanding, and "training" becomes second nature. It is useful, informative, easily referenced, and very readable. Even if you think you know dogs, you will learn from this book, and enjoy the reading. It is not overwhelming for beginners, either. If you have a dog, buy this book, and then be prepared to have to buy 4 more copies because you keep "lending" it to friends and family.
- This book seems to be an excellent book for training your dog -- big or small. The author takes you from trying to understand your dog, to simple things you should need to train your dog, the first basic commands, moving on to harder things. At the end the author also outlines a variety of items to discipline your dog if your dog has problems of barking, chewing etc.
Not only is the book detailed, but set up in a way that you can easily read. Lists are very helpful in this book. The book also has interesting antecdotes about the author's experience with dogs which are separated out so that people who don't want to read them don't have to read them. The content is good to help because it doesn't limit your options to one way of correcting your dog, but gives other ideas for those of us who are only a little creative. The book even talks about what games are good to play and has given me a few ideas for games for me and my dog. My only problem with the book is the plug for a specially designed leash that the author sells. It does sound like a good leash for a dog that is kept inside most of the time. My dog is mostly outside and so the training with the special leash doesn't look that practical to me. I think the best part of the book is the constant encouragement to the dog owners. The author tells us that training a dog depends on our attitude and does everything possible to keep our attitude to be helpful for training our dogs. One of the better dog-training books I have found.

3 comments about Silky Terriers (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- Good basic knowledge about Silky Terriers. Very helpful for training and understanding their temperament. Brief and understandable.
- This book was extremely informative and I loved every minute I spent reading it. This was the type of all-around-book that I was searching for on the Silky breed and I was worried it would not cover as much as I'd hoped it would. It goes into extreme details at times and offers a lot of beautiful pictures and illustrations on the Silkys. This book covered everything from the history to the senior years, with annotations along the pages. If you're interested in the Silky breed, I promise you will not find another book as informative.
- This book really helped me in understanding everything i needed to know about the silky terrier breed. I also found the grooming section to be very helpful. If you have a silky i would recommend this book.

4 comments about The Basset Hound (Terra Nova Series).
- I looked at quite a few books about Bassets before deciding to buy this one. As a new owner of a pet Basset, I wanted a book that would tell me what to expect and how to care for my new friend. Many other books focused on training for show; this book tells you all about Bassets. There is some information for those interested in showing and registering a Basset, but this is a good resource for anyone who just wants to love, care for and understand the lovable little hounds. Highly recommended! And even better if you check this out and read all about them before you adopt a new friend! Enjoy!
- Much better than the animal planet books, the terra nova series really gets into the basset hound and what it takes to own one. Great source of information if you are considering the basset.
- This is such a great book. Every Basset owner should have one. Very informative, lots of info on the breeed, common medical issues, and training tips. Everything you would ever want and need to know about Basset Hounds is in this book.
- Dog breed books come and go in various guises year in, year out. This one leaps out from the pack. Excellent advice, excellent breed facts, wonderful photos & illustrations. Nothing negative to say about this beautiful book. Put this one high up on your gift list for the Basset Hound lover in your life.

5 comments about Ruffly Speaking (Dog Lover's Mysteries).
- I loved this one, the dogs, the new characters, Winer and Lamb, Rita and her psychological ponderings, the hearing dog Ruffly and her owner, and just the wealth of detail about all of them. this was a nicely constructed mystery, plenty of meaty characters, plenty of side plots, plenty of dogs to enjoy. If I were a dog, I'd beg for more like this one.
- This series just gets to be more and more fun. I love Holly Winter and her two beautiful Alaskan Malamutes. This book delves into the world of working dogs, more specifically hearing aid dogs. Dogs are wonderful aids for people with all kinds of disabilities. Ruffly is an adorable little mixed breed that lives with a woman who is hearing impaired, and believe me, he takes his job seriously. And we also have a murder to deal with. A murder that it seems only Holly thinks is a murder. The denouement of the murderer is also fun because we have Holly backed by her trusty Rowdy who do the unmasking. This series is definitely for dog lovers, but even those who aren't as fascinated by dogs as some of us will enjoy this warm and wonderful series.
- Better than Bloodlines, but still not that great. Poor character development, and the fact that Conant has a tendancy to ramble make this book less than what it could have been.
I'm also getting rather irritated with the author's constant free advertising plugs for Eukanuba, Iams, and some other major brand names in the pet industry. Are we reading an novel, or an informational brochure by Iams? Is she getting paid to do this, or does she really believe that Eukanuba is the best dog food on the market? (If she does, she's very ignorant on the subject of dog foods.) I don't like my novels to tell me how I should be training or what I should be feeding.
I probably will not ever purchase any books written by Conant again.
- Morris Lamb dies suddenly of what appears to be plant poisoning: his plants. When his house is sold to an Episcopalian priest and her deaf dog companion starts to have seizures, Holly Winter, dog writer and lover, starts to investigate.
I have enjoyed this series that takes place in Cambridge, Ma.
I'm definitely a dog person and these are definitely dog lovers books, filled with all kinds of tips and tidbits on dog companions.
I was extremely disappointed in this one, however. The writing is choppy. The characters that haven't already been introduced in previous books are underdeveloped. Conant often seems to babble. I didn't really understand how her opening statements about aliens and ufo's had anything to do with dogs.
The Dog Lover's Mysteries have been a favorite of mine so I'm going to give it another chance and read the next one, but I wish someone had told me earlier not to waste my time on this one.
- I was really impressed. This was my first mystery by Susan Conant and I think I'm hooked. The only problem I see with her subject is that she's limiting her fan base. If I wasn't was what Holly Winters so aptly put it, a "dogaholic" (trainer, groomer, smoocher, dog show groupie, etc.) I wouldn't have understood a lot of the book. But since I am......these are just wonderful and I hope she keeps writing for a long time. The story had a good amount of important information concerning assistance dogs, but it also had a great story line that kept your attention. She slips many other things in her story too; animal health tips, training tips, showing tips. I learned several things I've never even heard of. I know now that there are two types of Mals, what CHD probability means and many more. I stopped a couple times while reading and did quick searches on Google to keep me up to date. I even bought a rare book by Bernie Brown. Leah would be proud of me. Thank you Ms. Conant, my compliments to the chef.

5 comments about The Dog Who Spoke with Gods.
- When I started this book I was very excited about it as it was well written, realistic, fantastic characters, good versus evil....seemed the best of everything...not to mention I love dogs. When the dog started talking though, the whole thing fell apart for me and it just got worse. Though the main character was a young, intelligent college student, she was undoubtedly the most stupid human on the face of the earth. The people she trusted (all her enemies), the idiotic decisions she made....big DUH!!! I honestly can't believe this book got 5 stars at all. The ending was horrible. I finished the book because for me it was such a joke how bad it got and I honestly wondered if it could get worse. YES!!!
Borrow it from someone, read the first half and then pass it on to someone else. Make up your own ending. Girl runs off with dog, finds understanding rental situation, reapplies to different college for an Animal Science Degree, goes on to vet school and becomes the best alternative vet out there.
- what ever you do, dont spend money on this book. it is the worst piece of propaganda i have read in a long time. compared to the working pitbull, this book does nothing but damage the breed. avoid at all costs.
- This was a wonderful book. A little far-fetched on a few things, but sooooo good. If you love dogs (especially pit bulls), and you hate the way they are treated by most people, you will like this book. Good read!
- So first I must say, I cried almost all the way through this book. That being said, it was a great read. I loved the story and the lack of cookie-cutter storyline that you would have expected. i do think it would have been awesome if Elizabeth had become a Vet... Some of the character development was a little boring... the dog storyline was way more interesting to me than the other characters. The overall awesomeness of this story will appeal to any pit bull lover, or anyone who has felt that strong, unexplainable bond with their pet.
- This book is one of the best book i have ever read. considering i love pit bulls and think animal testing should be out lawed this book made me cry and laugh simply for the fact that Diane caught the pit bull personality so perfect. She told some of the things that most people would not know such as peta supports the banning of pit bulls and that pit bulls no matter what they are forced to go though have the ability to recover it's a heart warming story and a great depiction of what really happens to all those dog and cats used for so called "animal research" or as i call it the needless killing of animals. i am a junior in high school and any one trying to get a feel for pit bulls and animal testing should read this book it was one of the best i have ever read.
