5 comments about The Welsh Terrier Leads the Way (The Pure Bred Series).
- Even it's not written in my own language, as I speak Portuguese, reading this book was like having the author with me on a very nice talk about Welsh Terriers , talking about her experiences, and teaching me about this wonderfull breed.
- From Reviewers Bookwatch--February 1999 "Welsh Terriers are known to be a quirky and independent, and Bardi McLennan brings these delightful canines to life in THE WELSH TERRIER LEADS THE WAY. The book is destined to be a classic reference on the breed. Mclennan looks at the development of the breed, the land where it was created, and the purpose for which it was bred. The WELSH TERRIER touches on all aspects of owning a welsh terrier, from history to breeding, from prominent kennels to whelping a litter. Comprehensive, insightful, authoritative, THE WELSH TERRIER is essential for all who own or aspire to own this remarkable animal"
- From the Rocky Mountain Welsh Terrier Club Newsletter..." Bardi's authorial voice is quite clear in this wonderfull new book. It's not just a dry-as-dust recitation of pedigrees, but a lively, affectionate introduction to the breed and to the people both here and abroad who have loved and safeguarded it over the years. There are many pictures of show champions both new and old. This is not one of those dog books which makes the dog sound perfect for everybody, but a realistic treatment of a dog we'll all recognize.
- The Welsh Terrier Lead The Way has a good handle on the historical aspects of the dog. However the lack of quality photos distracts from the beauty of the breed and the many wonderful characteristics are blurred by the black and white photos. The book contains many old photos from past champions and breeders but does not contain the in depth information that many people who are interested in the breed are looking for. If you are interested primarily in the dogs history then this is a good book for you.
- The author gives us the accumulated wisdom of many years as an outstanding breeder and authority on the breed. The books serves both the novice and experienced breeder well. Also seems intended to introduce the general public to Welsh Terriers and turn them into breed enthusiasts.Portland, OR

3 comments about What Is My Dog Thinking?: The Essential Guide to Understanding Pet Behavior.
- I think this book is meant to be for children. I picked up this book having my kids (10 & 5) in mind. We had adopted a dog as theirs earlier this year. By flipping through the pages, I decided to buy it. It has very nice pictures on every page. The simple and short descriptions of the dog's "thinking" and "feelings" should be perfect for the children to understand. My kids love it.
- This skimpy little book has a catchy title and full-coloured pictures but does not add much to an observant dog owner what he/she already knows. While the book maybe a quick read to prospective or new owners, I would recommend "Puppies for Dummies" by Sarah Hodgson which gives you the A-Z of raising those cute but oftentimes wilful pups and "The Only Dog Training Book You Will Ever Need: From Avoiding Accidents to Banishing Barking, the Basics For Training a Well-Behaved Dog" by Gerilyn J. Bielakiewicz, Andrea Mattei which discusses the highly effective method of clicker training for dogs at length. These books were major life-savers as I was a complete novice when I adopted my 3-month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi a month ago. I picked up insightful and no-nonsense tips off of the "Dummies" series and taught my pup over 10 commands with ease in just days (!) with the aid of a clicker. Betsy Brevitz's "Hound Health Handbook" is also another excellent reference book which offers credible advice from a writer-turned-vet behind the award-winning urbanhound.com site. These books are must-reads for owners who are experiencing problems instilling discipline/obedience in their dogs, not least prospective owners who are contemplating what breed to buy and the pros and cons as well as problems and the how-tos of adopting a dog(s) to complete their lives.
- This is a short review, as it is a short book. "What is My Dog Thinking" is a satisfactory overview of various canine behaviors and their meanings. This overview didn't offer much that I haven't read elsewhere. Also disappointing was its lack of instruction on how to address certain dog "feelings" - for example, if I can interpret that my dog is fearful, what are some basic ways that I can help my dog deal with this fear?
That said, for its price and the time it takes to read it and occasionally refer back to it, it probably is a worthwhile purchase for a dog owner or prospective dog owner, even if it is somewhat lacking. However, it would not be my first choice.

2 comments about Bull Terriers Today.
- If you are looking for information and solid reading on the AKC Bull Terrier then this is the book for you! As a long time breeder, this is finally a book I can recommend for novices interested in the breed. The book is also enjoyable for us that have been in the breed for a while too. The book includes color pictures of well known dogs in the breed along with some history. I have purchased this book several times over for gifts.
- Well written, as far as it goes. Great full colour pictures, though a little over-done on the History of Breed Champions. (Could have used a little less ancient history on former Show Champs, and concentrated a bit more on more immediate concerns.)

5 comments about Dogs Deserve Dialogue: Rover Should Hang on Your Words NOT on Your Leash.
- This book really was a disappointment, the training methods are traditional, just pulling and pushing the dog into positions and even choking the dog for 5 seconds if it behaves aggressively.
- Based solely on reading and using this training manual for more than two years, I have turned around a friend's dog-aggressive canine in a snap, and have calmed my own dog's mild anxieties.
I'm convinced Judy Moore's method of communication works with every dog -- for every human who is willing to try it and not give up too soon. It happifies both hound and human!
Dialogue is so easy to understand, easy to implement (if one will just humble his pride enough to do crazy-looking 180 degree turns at the start of walks with his dog) and sure-fire in its results that it can also be used on the most aggressive, destructive, terrorized/terrorizing dog. The book gives plenty of examples of dogs who were so beyond the pale that other trainers had recommended they be locked in a crate for life or put to death.
The reason Moore's regimen is so successful with out-of-control dogs, I believe, is that it eliminates the underlying causes of bad behavior by giving crazed-with-fear or crazed-with-anger dogs such confidence, self-esteem, and peace of mind -- not to mention such fun! Hence, the dogs have no desire to act out their fears or aggressions any longer. That's because they no longer feel fear or anger.
Unbelievably, I found that mastering Dialogue takes only a few minutes a day. The initial instruction begins only after the handler/owner has studied and practiced on his own until he is absolutely sure he understands the steps and can teach them to the dog in such a way that he makes the dog feel better about himself. After that, dog and handler need do only 10 to 15 minutes of daily practice of these exercises, which are the components of Dialogue and the structure for teaching the dog to respond to any situation with trust.
I've found that if you decide to implement Moore's method, you have to lay aside all preconceived ideas and previous training methods. You have to banish your own fears -- for instance, a belief that you lack the ability needed to be a successful dog handler. Your confidence level is always picked up by, and passed along to, your dog.
Exactness (following all Moore's instructions to the letter, and insisting in a kind way that the dog do the same) and consistency (refusing to revert to other methods, and sticking with Dialogue and only Dialogue, day in and day out) are two ingredients in this recipe for success.
Also, you have to have -- or quickly develop -- unbounded patience. The human holding the leash ends up developing lots of good (latent) qualities in himself. In fact, I'd say he progresses as much, if not more, than his canine companion by the time the training "takes."
Amazing changes in a dog's behavior sometimes come in a matter of hours or days. That's not to say that behavior modification is a quick fix, though. It usually takes at least six months - sometimes more -- of regular practice to ingrain Dialogue in both owner and dog to the point where the latter responds automatically to each and every command, even off-leash.
I really like Moore's premise that there's no such thing as a bad dog. Better yet, her method proves her words!
Every dog deserves this book. Every dog owner does, too. Dialogue is the only way to go, in my book!
- I have read Judy's book, seen her video, met her when she came to Milwaukee in 2001 to work with two dogs, and this year in May 2002 when she gave a wonderful presentation at the Wisconsin Humane Society talking about some of her successes which are also mentioned in her book. She did a live demonstration and as a volunteer at the facility, I received so much positive feedback from attendees. The book has helped friends of mine who recently acquired dogs and one person in particular refers to Judy's book as his "bible" when working with his dog. I do not have a dog of my own, but as a dog walker at the shelter, Judy's teachings have helped me to better understand the dogs I walk at the shelter to have more enjoyable quality time. The book is so worthwhile to every dog owner, both new and those who have had dogs, and this book should be associated on Amazon with other dog-related books (whether training or pleasure reading).
Thank you.

2 comments about Pawfiles: Portraits of Dogs: A Bark and Smile Book.
- Everyone who picks this book up and flips through it really enjoys it. The photographs combined with the individual profiles of the dogs make for some great entertainment.
- This book contains photos of dogs along with personal information about each dog, such as age, location, likes, dislikes, etc. It is especially cute for other dog owners to read about some of the personality quirks of the dogs in the book. (One dog loves to eat/chew fisher-price farm animals.) I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading about dogs that I didn't know. This is fun, quick read with great photos.
