3 comments about Briards (Kw Series , No 231s).
- When chosing our first dog I researched several possible breeds and got my information from books, breeders and the internet. This is one of the books I purchased and felt very let down. There is very little information that is specific to the breed but lots of advertising, especially for Nylabone products which my dog hates. If you really want good advice from someone who knows and understands this breed, contact Briard Rescue. The lady I spoke was happy to answer all my questions, gave me the most accurate and helpful advice (on the breed and breeders) and even invited me to meet her Briards. Don't waste your money on this book. PS I did chose a Briard and she is wonderful!
- I found very little about Briards and more of a general book on dogs. I was quite disappointed actually. Since I own a briard I was looking for something specific about the breed. I have found more at various web sites than in a book on the subject!
- What's cooking!? In order to understand the above, let us look at the quote which appears on the back cover of this book: "This book, illustrated with over 175 full color photos and drawings, presents sensible, easy-to-follow recommendations about selecting and caring for a Briard." What this author conveniently forgets to mention is that 3/4 of this book is comprised of GENERALIZED CANINE TRAINING & PRODUCT ADVERTISING. I was dumbfounded at how little this book actually delves into Briards. Here's the breakdown: The entire length of the book is 192 pages. 62 of which is solely focused on Briards. The remaining 128 pages deals with PRODUCTS, TRAINING & GROOMING TIPS, that can be applied to any canine breed. I was highly disappointed, considering that books on this breed are scarce as it is.

1 comments about Grouse Dogs.
- The first half of the book was extremely enjoyable, as this seems to be a topic that is overlooked lately. Grouse hunting and the dogs that are used seem to be growing out of favor in todays sporting literature.
however when i reached the second half i was dismayed, as it seemed to be a rehash of the first. despite the redundancy and the fact that the book did not deal with any aspects of training a grouse dog other than
just to take it grouse hunting, i would buy the book again

Stories of Our Canine Companions
By John Cali
It is easy to see that the author and those who have contributed stories to this short story collection are passionate about their canine companions.
There's a story about a miniature schnauzer who moved furniture in order to get up to the table and eat a whole plate of brownies.
There is a story about a dog that looked into the writer's eyes and connected with an unearthly bond. Could this dog really be an angel?
There are stories about bonds between dogs and their owners that cannot be ended by death. Dogs have saved their owners in life changing ways.
This book brings to mind the bond between my husband, a 300 lb Santa Claus, and our 10 lb Chihuahua, named Bonita.
Anyone who has ever been owned by a dog will enjoy the stories contained in this small book, called Dogs, by John Cali.
The stories are short, and can be read while catching a train to town, or just before falling asleep at night. I think it would be fun to read one story each evening with your family, around the dinner table. Read the stories ahead, there are a few stories that may not be suitable for young children.

- Holy Cow. On a scale of 1-5 this book is a 10. John has done an excellent job of telling heart warming stories of our canine friends. If you love dogs, then this book is for you.Don't wait another minute, order this book. You won't be disappointed.
- This book really plucked at my heart strings. So many excellent writers including the editor John Cali. Notable stand-outs are Cathy Clamp, Kate Fratti, and Robert Paul Blumenstein. I have (as noted in my other reviews) been a long-time fan of Robert Paul Blumenstein, author of the quirky thrillers Flirtin' with Jesus and Snapping the String. I was surprised, not to mention very pleased, to see Robert Paul Blumenstein stretch in this assignment and to glimpse his "nonfiction" side.
If you're a dog lover, you'll love this book. It, of course, has numerous "put-down" tales, which is the hardest part about owning a pet of any species. But there are other stories that will edify the reader and certainly point to that special place pets (specifically dogs) have in our lives.
My only criticism of the book is that it wasn't long enough, Yet, big things come in small packages, right? Well, this book delivers a big package of Love in a small, wonderful volume filled with glorious escapades about lovable dogs. Also, many stories are nicely delivered from the POV of the dog, so we get the pooch's side of things, too. I highly recommend this book!

3 comments about Book of the Yorkshire Terrier.
- I doubt any breed has as thorough a book on it as does this book for Yorkshire Terriers. This is a complete book resplendant with photographs and information.
Perhaps the only thing not discussed is how to make a profit with Yorkies. I suspect nobody makes a financial profit with these guys, because if they're all like our Buddy, you just could not part with even a single pup! My wife and I, and those of us at LJ's Breaking Free$ could not be pleased more than we are with this book - Bill Anderson (LJ).
- This is a very good book. If I could only get one book this is the book I would buy. Book has 17 chapters 346 pages. Covers everything you would want to know about this breed. Lots of colored pictures. Discusses the history, who's who in the fancy, showing, grooming, breeding , selecting puppy , puppy care, career in dogs.
- Could not put it down,Tells you everything from A to z. the best and most complete book on yorkies you"ll ever be able to find. beautiful full color pictures and knowledgeable text. Was able to find a champion relative of my own dog.

- It is a recent book on the Akita dog. The photos are of excellent quality. A small book jammed packed with everything you need to know about the Akita. A great beginners book for anyone considering obtaining this breed.

2 comments about Toward the Ph.D. for dogs: Obedience training from novice through utility.
- Modern scientific training uses operant conditioning with positive reinforcement to produce dogs who are happy, eager, willing partners. Think about that and look at the photos of the German Shepherd who modeled for this book. See those pinned ears and rolled-back eyes? See how the trainer is knocking the dog off his feet with a strangle collar? Can you say "cruel and out-of-date"?
If you want a pleasant family pet with good manners, work from Pat Miller's "The Power of Positive Dog Training." If you're training for formal obedience, try Morgan Spector's "Clicker Training for Obedience." Have a dog who's thrilled to cooperate with you -- not a dog who's too terrified not to.
- This book is a great referrence tool. When first written, it was in keeping with the times and type of training methods being used. For todays methods, the basics are still the same. Reader should use good judgement when applying some methods in this book. Over all this is an excellent book. This book would compliment training classes.
