3 comments about Dr. Jane's Natural Care for a Healthier, Happier Dog.

  1. DR. Jane Bicks has dedicated her life to the health of pets!
Her books are very informative and my best pet friends benefit from each new book I read.

  2. This book taught me so much about dog nutrition and health. Much more than I already thought I knew. I know that most if not all foods for dogs on the market today are full of cereals and dangerous chemicals. No wonder our pets are increasingly getting various forms of cancers from these harmful chemicals and allergies from all these cereals. When was the last time you saw a dog go running into a wheat or corn field unless it was chasing after game? If your dog is eating a store bought food with the first 3 ingredients being cereals, watch out! Follow some of Dr. Jane's recipes for your dog or get her food. We don't have the time to cook for our dog so Dr. Jane's food is just awesome and our dog just loves it!

  3. I love Dr. Jane. I would recommend her book to every animal owner. I would also like to know where to find the pet health products. I used the bath formula, then I tried to re order and no answer on 1-800 #, and my order was returned in the mail as undeliverable. Please help! It is the only shampoo that has helped my dog Buddy.

3 comments about The New Pomeranian.

  1. This is not your ordinary pet-store-learn-about-the-breed book. It is the best book on the market about Pomeranians and I have read lots of them. It has complete information about the history of the breed, care of the breed, care of puppies, pregnant Poms, and how to keep your Pom groomed, and clean. It is NOT a generic book, but has very specific information about Pomeranians. If you buy only one book, this is the one to get.

  2. The New Pomeranian has an extensive chapter on the genetics of the Pomeranian breed. More importantly, it has examples of color genetics that insure that breeders will be able to "plan" their litters based on the colors they wish to do selective breeding for. I have not found a better book on dog color breeding or Pomeranians in general. The conformation drawings are sure to help novice and experience breeder alike rate their puppies for the show ring.

  3. This well written book has detailed information on breeding and genetics, and wonderful line drawings of conformation and grooming. There are no color photographs, but the quality of the text and line drawings more than makes up for that.

4 comments about Pup Parenting: A Guide to Raising a Happy, Well-Trained Dog.

  1. While this book has some excellent information, much of it is a rehash of many other excellent dog raising and training books. The authors keep tossing up a squeaky-tog boogieman -- dog training by harsh methods -- methods that haven't been current in over twenty years. However, I would have rated the book at 3 stars if it weren't for the fact that the authors state that "there are many pet stores that guarantee the dogs they sell and are extremely responsible in choosing where their dogs come from." This is on page 65, where they actually imply that a pet store is "responsible" if it gets its puppies from a USDA licensed dealer. This is appallingly bad advice. It is NEVER a good idea to buy a dog from a pet store, unless you don't mind supporting puppy mills.

  2. I wish I'd had this handy guide when we first adopted our dogs from a rescue group. I know I wouldn't consider adopting a dog again without rereading this book first. This book has helped us have a better relationship with our dogs. We've been able to work with them to change behaviors that were annoying us. We used this book's problem solving tools to help our dogs understand when barking was welcome (to scare away potential intruders) and when it was not welcome (when the mailman was delivering our mail). We worked with them to make our walks comfortable rather than a struggle to keep moving by giving them time at the middle of the walk to sniff around the neighborhood. We retrained our dogs using this book's step by step method for success. We felt great about using the "kind and firm approach" described in this book. We're all happier, and I will continue to recommend this book to all dog owners. Whether you've had your dog forever (or what seems like forever like me) or you're considering adopting a dog, this innovative "guide to raising a happy, well-trained dog" gives you tips on everything from choosing the best dog to fit your personality to pinpointing problems and correcting undesirable behaviors. I found expert advice on choosing a good breeder, finding a great veterinarian, traveling with our dogs, leaving our dogs at a kennel, and pup-proofing our home.

  3. Collaboratively authored by the team of Lynn Lott, Jane Nelsen, and animal behaviorist Therry Jay, Pup Parenting: A Guide To Raising A Happy, Well-Trained Dog is an informative and "pet owner friendly" guide to selecting and training the perfect dog for a family. Providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the many and varying canine breeds, Pup Parenting can be invaluable in determining which one is best for a particular family, as well as assessing the personality of the new doggy pal, and curing the immediate obedience troubles which might be encountered. Pup Parenting diligently and knowledgeably carries its readers through the wonderful world of canine companion ownership and the positive effects which dogs might have on familial relationships. Pup Parenting is very highly recommended for all readers wanting to make sound and informed decisions with respect to puppy selection and care for themselves and their families.

  4. Rebeccasreads highly recommends PUP PARENTING as an instructive & entertaining guide into the modern ways of raising loving & responsible canine companions.

Gone are the "leader of the pack-rule by dominance & fear" ways of the past. Now it's all about who REALLY needs the training -- or re-training -- & how to transform your over-indulged, out-of-control family member by first & foremost looking at how YOU behave!

With a firm & affectionate attitude the authors cover everything from puphood to caring for your beloved friend at the end.

They also involve you, the reader, by asking you to "step back" & take some long & serious looks at how you run your home life & your family members. Don't worry, there are many funnily dreadful tales & lots of gladsome successes that will have you wagging your tail!

5 comments about Retriever Training for the Duck Hunter.

  1. I bought a Chesapeake Retriever and purchased this book to train her for duck hunting.

The book was very well outlined for each day and the corresponding training on that day. Not only did it teach you how to give proper training, but safe guarded you from using improper techniques that could damage your dog. As outlined I spend the 15 minutes every day with the designated training. Soon my dog progressed at a fast rate. Now she is a loyal companion at my side during cold duck hunts VERY excited to retrieve ducks.

Negative side about the book are the old pictures which were taken over 15 years ago. The advance training outlines the need for equipment that was either to difficult to build or expensive to buy (dog ropes leading into water, toe lines which cause pain to dog etc...) Also I wanted to finish training with a electric collar (for field use the first couple duck hunting trips) and the book gave no information on how to use one saying basically you are too incompetant or stupid to know how to use one properly so don't try. I did get a electric collar and it fine tuned my dog into a excellent retriever (and I no longer use the collar). This last feature about the book led me to give it 3 stars.

  2. This book was easy to read and follow, making it the perfect book to start with. I recently got my first serious hunting dog and knew NOTHING about the process of training. I was seriously thinking of professional training her but no more. The book showed my what to do, when to it, how much to do, and that the person doing should be me. Though there is a lot of information in the book, it is presented in a concise and interesting manner. If you are a dog person, you will have a hard time putting the book done once you have started.

  3. This book gives you lesson by lesson the course for training your dog. It helps you understand the psychology of training a dog. It is great for the first time trainer and veteran alike. I now have a high powered fully hand signal trained labrador that is a blast to hunt with and is fully obedient at all times.

A great book for anyone obedience training any pup.

  4. After reading this book, I felt like I was an expert on the how-to's of training retrievers. I have tried out many of these training techniques with my dog and have had fabulous success. And I could swear that my dog has spoken a word or two after several training sessions! I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in having a well-disciplined dog. A brilliant piece of work!

  5. I used this book 8 years ago to train Jessie, my Chocolate Lab. She was killed in an accident on Nov. 15, 1998 and she was the best hunting companion a duck hunter could ever expect to have. Her training was done by this book as it is written. Every day for 10 straight months we worked on at least one lesson from the book. I checked the book out from my local library and renewed it each month for 11 months. I am purchasing this book for my puppy I expect to acquire in March, 1999. Todd Hatch

5 comments about Ultimate Jack Russell Terrier (Essential).

  1. THIS MAYBE AN OLDER BOOK BUT IT IS THE ULTIMATE BOOK FOR THE PARSON RUSSELL TERRIER OWNER,THOUGH IT IS CALLED 'JACK RUSSELL'.
ITS COVERS EVERYTHING WITH A EXCELLENT CHAPTER WITH ILLUSTRATIONS FOR THE NOVICE OWNER/HANDLER ON GROOMING.
IF YOU OWN A PARSON YOU WANT THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIBRARY.

  2. This book lets you get to know the exciting and roudy Jack Russell Terrier. My wife and I purchased this book prior to purchasing our JRT. It was (and still is) a wonderful resource. Anything for grooming, training and enjoying your pup is in this book. The author also includes stories from her past ownership of many Jack Russells. Excellent book!

  3. This is an excellent resource tool for Jack Russell terrier owners to folks who just happen to love the breed. A spirited, loving dog, the Jack Russell terrier more often than not makes for a very appealling family pet.

Jacks have an interesting history. Parson Jack Russell created the breed to be good mousers and hunting dogs in the late 19th century. Jacks are closely related to the fox terriers. In the intervening years, Jacks have gained popularity and fame. Jacks have starred in a number of recent movies and commericals. Dana Carvey starred with a Jack named Barkley in "Clean Slate" (Barkley also starred on several episodes of "Full House"). The popular TV sitcom "Frasier" has a Jack named Eddie (real name Moose and father to the Jack who starred in "My Dog Skip"). "Wishbone" is the most famous Jack to date. Recent coverage on this delightful breed has certainly helped boost their popularity as does this book.

  4. We recently purchased a JRT named Lucky. I purchased this book beforehand and found it a great resource for us. Everything from the history of the breed to showing the breed. Great photographs!

  5. I was very taken with the book. So much that I contacted Mary Strom and purchased one of her puppies. She was not only very helpful, but made sure I had every bit of information I needed to make my Jack Russell terrier happy and healthy. I recommend this book to anyone that is looking to purchase or adopt a Jack Russell terrier. The information contained within is indispensable.

3 comments about Basenjis ("KW").

  1. I will not ruminate about what the previous reviewer said. I will just say that they are absolutely correct when they say this is a "formula book" save a few pages specifically about this breed and most of the pictures are of basenjis.

I just wanted to add that if you have any doubt of what I speak, I will just say that pages 100-106 describe ways to "modify the behavior of your dog" and are about how to stop your dog from BARKING and waking up the neighbors!!!

I think that's enough said on that. If you have or have been around a basenji, you know that this is a preposterous thing to spend four pages on... :-)

  2. This book has a very small section that talks specifically about Basenjis.
The rest of this book is a formula book. The remaining pages are
a standard text of average quality advice on dog care some of which
    may be irrelevant to Basenjis.
    The
publisher has one for many breeds and they are all exactly the same-save
a small section on the specific breed. If I had to choose only one
Basenji book it would not be this one. I would Choose Susan Coes
and Elspet Fords would be my second. I also own Stacked and Moving
A unique book worth owning, but perhaps only to one interested in the
    showring.
So I would say that owning Basenjis by Jack Shafer, and R. Mankey
is nice, there are by the way nice color photos, but not if you need a definative text on the subject
    of Basenjis.

  3. Basenjis are beautiful, exotic African hounds who have a history that spans upward of 2,000 years. The basenji is a very unique breed of dog indeed. Basenjis can shed tears, they yodel instead of bark and run with the grace and speed of antelopes.

A beautiful, unusual dog, the basenji is singuarly distinct in having a wrinkled forehead, a tightly curled tail (usually the tail is a double curl) and long graceful limbs. Basenjis clean themselves like cats and female basenjis come into heat once a year.

This wonderful book gives a good overview of this very unusual dog. It is something all dog lovers, not just basenji lovers will treasure.
