3 comments about Aggression in Dogs: Practical Management, Prevention & Behaviour Modification.

  1. This is really one of the best books out there for dealing with agression. It really clears up what it is all about and what to do about it in very practical terms. It helped me see what the real issues where and gave me a number of suggestions for training against the agression. Very practical where others are not. She doesn't waste time with too much philosphy but gets straight to the issues and the training. But the true measure is in the results and I am very happy about that. We had one very confused 6 yr old boy and he's coming along terrifically--I was really worried that he would spend his days angry, confused and mean. It's a turn around--so yes, things can be done to work with aggression. Thanks Brenda Aloff.

  2. This book actually has a lot of very good, practical, and very helpful information for the dog owner who wants to prevent (as I do) or treat agression problems, especially in agression-prone breeds like spaniels and some of the guarding breeds. I debated whether or not to give this book a five star rating. I settled on four stars for now because of my one "complaint" against the book -- it is a very, very COMPLICATED book to read and utilize. The author, apparently through many years of working with problem dogs, has developed a number of complex systems for treating and preventing agression problems which, while I'm sure will be useful and should work well, and just very complicated for the amateur to use. This is definitely NOT the kind of book one can read in bed when tired. It reminds me of some of my college texts -- a challenging and complicated read, and perhaps a bit on the dry side. I know that when I tried to read it recently, my mind often wandered.
To sum it up, I would recommend the purchase of this book for the interested reader, just be prepared to sit down and devote quality time to reading the book and learning the system of training the author has put forth. Unfortunately, my life right now is just too complicated to really give this book the time it deserves. I hope in the near future to have a little more free time to carefully read the book, absorb the information, and begin to implement it with my own dog.

  3. This book is terrific for owners of any dog. We actually rescued an dog-aggressive dog and actually went to Brenda Aloff for a few sessions. Her advice and exercises helped turn a stressed out little monster into my little princess. My dog isn't magically cured, but by using this book, we've taught her to look to her humans for guidance in stressful situations, instead of just attacking as she would in the past. She knows the rules and was taught them in a completely positive reinforcement manner. I highly recommend this book.

5 comments about Devil Dog Diary: A day by day account of US Marine Corps training.

  1. This summer i leave for San Deigo, for boot camp. After reading this AMAZING book, i am now even more motivated and pumped to become a MARINE!! This book is great for anyone planning on joining, or anyone that knows somebody in the Marines.

  2. The final challenge each Marine faces after bootcamp is the struggle to find words to describe the ordeal of the previous three months. Gunnery Sgt. Will Price has answered the impossible question, "What was it like?" If you are plannning on joining the Marine Corps or know someone who is this book is a must read. This book is also a valuable tool for friends and family members to understand what their Marine is going through, this is the only thing closer than to going to bootcamp itself.

  3. Gunny Price has hit the nail on the head, with his account of Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC. The book is also well documented with photos. If you have been through P.I. or not, you will enjoy the read.

  4. What an inspiration to read this Gunny's account. The transformation of a boy into a man via the USMC. I had to order my second copy as I was not quite finished with my original, when a Navy Captain spyed it sitting on my desk, and "borrowed" it. That was over three weeks ago and I'm tired of waiting for it to return. Any young man (or women) who is thinking of stepping forward to become part of the greatest fighting force in the history of the world, has to read this book!
If a majority of civilians would just take a minute or two to investigate this diary, the conclusion could only be additional respect for the men and women who choose to wear the cloth of this nation. Highly recommend this to all. OORAHH!

  5. Reading this book brought me back to my days in bootcamp. Having graduated only last year, I find the journal of Gunny Price to be extremely accurate. His description of the training not only describes the twisted world of the drill instructor, but it also reveals the emotions and the everyday worries of Marine recruits. I haven't heard of any other book written during basic training by the recruit who lived it. This book blazes a path where "Ears Open, Eyeballs Click" could not. It goes through a recruit's mind.

5 comments about Pug Mugs: Good Pugs Gone Bad.

  1. What an adorable pug book full of pug pictures or mugs as it is titled. It is a very cute book for pug lovers of all ages!!

  2. Anybody who loves pugs will love this book. It is funny with cute pictures and equally cute captions and stories about pugs.

  3. Wackiest pug book EVER! I have two pugs and I love to cuddle with them and read this book to them. I have never seen such risks taken in pug photography! Bravo!

  4. One must be wary of an animal that owns the owner. So cute that misbehaving goes excused. This book may give us a glimpse of pugs gone amok, bad wiring.
On a lighter side this book makes a great gift and can brighten anyones day!

  5. This is one of the very best Pug books I have seen or owned, and I have quite a few (Pug ownership is a kind of cult, I think). The "crimes" in the book are true to the breed and the pictures are excellent, but the best part is the hilarious descriptions of purely Pug behavior.

5 comments about An Eye for a Dog: Illustrated Guide to Judging Purebred Dogs.

  1. An Eye for A Dog is a good book that requires the reader to work very hard in order to get the maximum benefit from it: it should really be a DVD. It explains clearly and with excellant line drawings about dog structure and movement but the reader has to carry out excercises on just about every page in order to "get" the point that the author is making. The system works but it is rather like going back to school and requires effort. Additionally some of the authors comments are rather old fashioned in today's dog world and some of the breeds chosen as type examples are not generally popular ones, so that one tends to start to lose patience with the author. As said, this is a subject that today would be more user friendly if presented in DVD format with an accompanying booklet.

  2. This was purchsed as a present for my sister in law. She was very impressed with it as she is a Judge for working dogs and this will help her a lot.

  3. If you want to be a serious breeder, judge or handler this book is a must have. There are secrets in the show rings and whelping boxes that only the best and most successful breeders know. It doesn't come around often when a breeder will open up their head and give you a glimpse of what makes a great show dog. This book will show you with a ton of pictures and diagrams the subtle differences between beautiful and drop dead gorgeous. New and old alike can benefit from this book. People tell you to go and sit ring side and you still don't see? Next time take this book and go sit ring side and see just what they mean. Ever had a handler tell you to hold a leash or a head a certain way and you didn't know why? Next time you will with the help of this book. Check it out for yourself.
    -S

  4. This book is not that easy to follow if you haven't already studied about structura and gait. which bone and muscle do what? why is it that this breed has a longer pastern than the other? why would a dog need to be under or overangulated? etc. Anyway, you should acompany this book with some other about structure and gait analysis so that you can really understand the difference between the dogs illustrated in this book and also study the breeds standards. Definetely not for beginners.

  5. I found this book brilliant to learn about what to look for in judging a dog for conformation , as it tests you as you go you really have to think and learn and imediately know your mistakes And its clearly written
    will buy more as presents

4 comments about Bulldogs For Dummies (For Dummies (Pets)).

  1. This book was very helpful with our new bulldogs. It shares their history, health, behavior, attitude- it covers everything! It even has helpful hints I wasn't expecting to find! I would recomend to any new bulldog owner or to someone who is interested in owning bulldogs.

  2. great book. had everything and more than i would ever want to know about my dog. i refer to it over and over again. i love the little stories and tips that are littered throughout the book.

  3. I thought the book was just "okay." I was disapointed because it didnt seem to be specifically written about the English Bulldog breed - many comments were just general helpful hints on how to train dogs, etc with just a few known bulldog specific comments like how the breed is prone to overheat. I dont even think the writer, Susan Ewing has owned or does own an english bulldog - her credits read other breeds of dogs she has owned and english bulldog was not listed. I'd get another book or do research online. I've read several bulldog books and still found the best stuff on breeders' websites. Good luck!

  4. I liked this book. It was easy to read and I went thru it quickly. I bought several bulldog books and although this wasn't my favorite one I did like the info in it. The dummy line of books are pretty good and this one is too.

5 comments about The Well-Connected Dog: A Guide to Canine Acupressure.

  1. I love the way this book is layed out. There are other great ones that also include nutrition, but this is the easiest to follow for accupressure. My dog's accupuncture Vet was even impressed. I was disappointed that there wasn't a section on ears, but they were addressed as part of other topics.

  2. This book contains very good information and is useful. It could be improved by adding an index, giving page numbers for specific techniques mentioned in the table of contents, and giving written descriptions of how to find the points. It is not possible to precisely pinpoint the acupuncture/pressure spot with just the dot on a dog diagram. There are some typos that should have been caught by the publisher. Over-all a useful book. I hope they come out with an updated edition that particularly contains an index.

  3. My copy arrived earlier than expected, and in excellent condition. Kudos to [...].
I have found the book to be easy to read, and the diagrams are very clear, and easy to understand.
I have already tried some accupressure on my little schnanuzer, and noticed some improvementin her pain level.I hope to improve on this, as I get more proficient with practice.

  4. I am thrilled with the book the service was great and the amount of information in this book is overwhelming.

  5. Well researched, superbly written and easily understood by the beginner, this is the primer for all dog lovers who are striving to improve their animal's health.
Traditional Chinese medicine is a difficult conceptfor most Westerners, and the authors explain the basic principles in a manner that allows we "newbies" to start affecting change in their dog's health immediately after reading their book.
I highly recommend this book to those who are searching for a more holistic approach to their animal's health care.

5 comments about The Everything Chihuahua Book: A Complete Guide to Raising, Training, And Caring for Your Chihuahua (Everything: Pets).

  1. This book is great, however it does not mention breeding, coat color genetics or some of the issues that can arise with the reproductive organs (cryptos or pyometera) so falls short of an "Everyting" book, but for the average owner would be great. For the breeder or people that want to get into showing chis additional books will be needed. Still a good book for all owners to have!

  2. Good Book for the money. Better than the "Chihuahuas for Dummies" book I bought just before.

  3. Ok, let's start off with the fact that his book is written for people who have a little direction with dogs to begin with. This may be the case for the general population of America, but I'm just pointing it out. I did find a lot of interesting facts pointed out here that were not pointed out in other books - about pack behaviour, food issues, and such generally overlooked information such as costs of a realistic first year ownership. This book gave our family some great guidance before and after we adopted our two dogs.

  4. This book is absolutely amazing. There is so much information packed into it. I would honestly recommend it to every person who plans on owning a chihuahua, or anyone already owns a chihuahua. I've bought quite a few books on chihuahuas and toy dogs. This book is definitely superior to all of them. This book is written so anyone can easily understand it. The training tips are very step by step. The book is pretty objective when discussing both sides of an issue. All in all, this book is amazing. I recommend it to everyone.

  5. I AM A CHIHUAHUA BREEDER AND THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK I HAVE READ THAT GIVES NEW CHI OWNERS STEP BY STEP GUIDANCE AS TO THE CARE AND UPBRINGING OF THEIR NEW PUPPY. I WILL RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERY PERSON I SELL A PUPPY TO.

5 comments about Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs.

  1. This was really an amazing book-- I learned so much about dogs and how much they can help us. Sharon Sakson makes the science understandable, and her ability to get you into the lives of people and their dogs is just amazing. Truly a book I couldn't put down.

Neil Plakcy, author of Mahu Fire: A Hawaiian Mystery

  2. I bought it as part of my research into Animal Assisted Activities/Therapy and it has been such an inspiration! The author has found so many wonderful true stories about dogs and people who are really making a difference, and she writes about them is such a beautiful way. Dogs do not receive enough credit for all the ways in which they help humans, from detecting cancer and warning their owners of seizures to helping abused children though their ordeals in court and providing comfort to people in institutions. I now talk about this book with everyone I meet!

  3. What a wonderful book! The writing is great, and it blends heart tugging stories about the love between owners and their dogs with interesting snippits from scientific studies. There are also entertaining stories about dogs and their connection with people throughout history.

Ever heard of St. Roch? Turns out he is the patron saint of dogs. He was starving to death when a dog began to bring him loaves of bread.

I expect everyone who reads the story of Toaster, the Mexican hairless who learned to warm and comfort a handicapped woman, will fall in love with him.

Really, unless you have a heart made of stone you will love this book.

  4. I savored every moment of this book. Sharon Sakson enthusiam for her subject comes trough and makes the pages fly. Parts of it almost read like a triller-- you can't wait to find out what happen next. She combines a ton of fascinating research with wonderful storie of incredible dogs. The book isn't exactly was I expetect-I thought it would be a bunch of stories about therapy dgs. but it is much more than that. It is engagingly written and the information is so interesting that it turns out to ba a book you can't put down.
She does a great job of making the scientific information interesting and useful. it is all so interesting and some time surprising, that I was never bored, even though I thought I knew plenty on this subject.
And if you like this book, you should really go back and read her first book, Paws & Reflect: A special Bond Between man and Dog. some of the stories are Hilarious.Ans so well-written

  5. I just recently completed this book and was positively amazed at its power. Once I picked it up, I found myself sneaking around so that I would be able to read it uninterrupted. The content blends little known information on dog history and lore with the most awesome stories. I indeed believe that to be able to draw the audience into the words on the page is a gift and Ms. Sakson is certainly gifted. I laughed at some of the stories, smiled and of course, shed a tear at some of the other "tails" that were shared. When I reached the end of the book, I looked for more pages, but there were not any. I am always able to tell the best books whenI am left wanting more and I was looking!

5 comments about The Original Dog Bible: The Definitive Source to All Things Dog.

  1. This book is a excellent souce of information about our canine friends. If you love dogs, and need information regarding their health, and their care, then this a book for you. It has a wealth of "how to's" about everything for our pets.
    I recommend this book highly!!

  2. Whether you own a pure-bred dog, a designer breed, or a rescued pooch this book is for you.

An encyclopedic resource on all things dog; everything from training and behavior tips, over 50 fun activities to enjoy with your dog, grooming helps, over 100 health remedies, pages of emergency solutions, and 50 career profiles with dogs.

There are profiles of over 250 breeds from every place imaginable; from the USA to Burkina Faso. Big dogs, small dogs, hunting, herding, feral, lap, working, show, and companion dogs. They are all in this book.

I've spent hours just leafing through this book a page at a time marveling at the wonders of this creation of God; the diversity of breeds, and their characteristics.

The Dog Bible will bring hours of enjoyment and is highly recommended to the dog lover, and dog owner.

  3. This is the worst dog book I have ever owned. I've been breeding and showing dogs for 20 years. I picked this book up and thought it might make a good general reference book. I was so disappointed when I got home. I felt like half of the material in it came directly from the Humane Society's web site. Much of the information in the book, which should be factual, is half-researched opinion. I can find better information than this on the Internet. The book hasn't been particularly well proofed or edited, either. Very disappointed.

  4. This book has everything about dogs. EVERYTHING. Breeds, how to raise a puppy, how to treat a sick dog and such as that. It even has little info boxes throughuot the whole book. It even has 101 activities you can do with your dog. It even has over 200 breeds of dog in the breed section. It even has EVERYTHING. A VERY good resource!

  5. I am a new dog owner, never had any experience with any dog ever. So naturally I was a tad uninformed about the subject. This book changed all that. This book is an incredible resource. It covers every conceivable thing about dogs. From A to Z. Plenty of color pictures and charts. This is a great resource. So good it's worth it's weight in gold, to me at least. I learned so much. I took the time to read the whole dang thing--iyt took a while--and I know I will return back to it in the future as I need to. This is a great reference if you know nothing about dogs. You won't be disappointed.

5 comments about Advanced Schutzhund (Howell Reference Books).

  1. This book is best read by someone who has watched Ivan Balabanov's two DVD's in the "Obedience Without Conflict" series. After watching the DVD's and reading this book, be sure to join The_Balabanov_Method on Yahoo! Groups:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/the_balabanov_method/

This is a Yahoo! Groups message forum in place for discussion and assistance pertaining to The Balabanov Method of dog training. It does expect members to have at least a fundamental knowledge of the method and how it is applied.

  2. Descriptive and very helpful, a little dry reading but still very helpful.

  3. The book was very informative, but I wouldn't suggest that a person without a strong working knowledge of training dogs reads this book untill they become more familar with dog training and the sport of Schutzhund.

  4. Ivan's and Karen's book was extremely helpful and is a must have. It gives you some problem solving techniques and advices you how to approach most common problems. I especially liked the suggestions on overcoming distraction issues. The different methods described really teach you how to think like the animal, and use it's innate abilities to your advantage. In the end you get a wonderful, obedient world competitor that is happy to do everything you ask.

  5. Training for Schutzhund has been an art passed on by club members. Most of the successful trainers in this sport are not as effective as teachers for the adult human. This book has bridged the gap providing effective communication to the handler on how to communicate effectively with the Schuthund dog.
