3 comments about Brussels Griffon: A Complete and Reliable Handbook (Rare Breed).

  1. What an insult to Griff breeders this book is. It is written by a writer who writes a lot of books about dogs, but he obviously never owned a Griff. The Griff has very special characteristics and needs, which the writer does not know. He probably used the same material to write about every other breed of dog, but Griffs are not just like other dogs.
Skip this book. The only good Griff book is by Doone Raynham but hard to get.

  2. The "Brussels Griffon A Complete and Reliable Handbook" does not contain ANY USEFUL/VALUABLE information about the Breed AT ALL, just generally instructs you on how to raise a puppy which can be found in any other book (i.e. "HOW TO RAISE A PERFECT PUPPY" will also do the trick as it's just as NON-SPECIFIC about the Breed as "Brussels Griffon A Complete and Reliable Handbook")........WASTE OF PURCHASE.....NO MATTER HOW CHEAP IT'S BEING SOLD FOR..........the only reason I gave it a rating of "1 star" was that was the LOWEST RATING AVAIL...

  3. This book is one of a "breed" series by these well-known dog-subject publishers. Although it is beautifully produced with great photos, it contains several errors about Brussels Griffons probably due its generic, cookie-cutter format wherein much text is applicable to ANY breed. Also the book is filled with advertising for various dog foods & products which I, for one, resent.

5 comments about Little Recipe Book for Dogs.

  1. I ordered this book based on other good reviews. Although this book is a little difficult to use (measurements, strange ingredients, lack of specific guidelines for daily feeding portions), it is quite charming. The writing style and the little pictures are worth the price of the book. Once I figure out exactly how much to feed my 95lb. GSD and my 40lb. special breed...and what the heck "offal" is...I will use some of the recipes. Overall, I am quite pleased to add this cool little book to my collection of books for dogs and cooks.

  2. I found this book to be one of the best for doggie recipes. I take in strays and they ALL love the recipes. Not being much of a cook myself I found these easy to follow and also very quick to the feeding bowl. Now guys......where is my kittie dining book for all my meow meows. At this very moment they smell puppy food and want some. Great book! Now, where's my kittie one to match?

  3. I bought this book because my 3 year old, spayed Chihuahua was overweight, licked continually and lacked her old level of energy. Within two days of providing recipe #4, along with a Linolenic supplement, her licking stopped. (She had been on anti-itch drugs for months and they didn't work). Also within two days she adapted to the 5 PM feeding schedule I set forth and does not typically beg for a treat (unless I am having something she really loves). Until her weight is normalized, I will give no snacks. Even healthy ones. Some of the ingredients mentioned are not always found in North American homes, but determining an adequate substitute is not difficult. Missy has been on homemade food now for three weeks. Her hair is growing back, now that the licking has stopped, and is shiny and soft. She has dropped a little weight and has much more energy. This book is great as a basic guide to canine nutrition. The ingredient ratios are important to follow and are not complex to figure out. Creating your own recipes after reading this book is a snap. Cooking the food is fun and easy. Missy loves the warm meal every day and eats it all, every time. I weigh every meal to assure she is not overfed or shortchanged. I will never go back to commercial dog food.

  4. While this book is absolutely full of common sense and seeming authenticity about doggie nutrition and habits, we need to know about the pedigree of the writer! Is he a vet? How does he know such detailed information? For example, daily feeding of 4.4 g protein, 1.3 g fat and 10.1 g carbohydrates per 1kg doggie weight is recommended. I'm usually willing to go along with such advice when I know it's source of authority. Another very significant omission - I would like a list of artists and titles for the wonderful prints included in the book, some are familiar, some not, but all are quite interesting. Isn't such credit to sources mandatory?

In summary, the recipes were good, this reader wants more information!

  5. As many of you may know, I now have close to 500 different cookbooks. This week, however, I am reviewing on of the more unusual in my collection. This cookbook was originally published in 1992 in Czech. In 1996 it was re-published in Spanish and now in 1997 in English.

Jaroslav Weigel has written a book that is a must for the true dog lover. A Little Recipe Book For Dogs is a book that advertises being sound and nutrition and good home cooking for your pet. Published by Ballantine Books, this cookbook is a unique way to feed your dog for the best in nutrition.

The recipes are provided with both ounces and pound as well as grams and kilos, and each recipe also provides for difference sized dogs. With only about 35 recipes the book is small, yet who many recipes do you really need for your pooch.

Recipes include Boiled Beef, Rice, Vegetables, and Egg; Beef, Pasta, Vegetables; Pig's or Ox Heart, Pasta, Dry Dog Food; Beef, Pig's liver, Oatmeal, Rice, Processed Cheese; Steamed Mackerel, Pasta, Root Vegetable; Baked Ground Beef, Pasta, Cheese, Egg, Raw Carrot; Cottage Cheese, Whole-grain Bread, Hard Cheese; Oatmeal, Apple, Hard Cheese; and Yogurt with Dog Biscuits.

A Little Recipe Book for Dogs also offers some nutritional information that is important for the care and well being of your best friend.

If you are looking for a unique way to feed your dog the healthiest foods possible, Jaroslav Weigel's A little Recipe Book for Dogs is certainly a book t have. Makes a great gift

1 comments about Top Dog Knits: 12 QuickKnit Fashions for Your Big Best Friend.

  1. I have wanted to knit something for my labrador for awhile now, but was confused as to properly measure her and the adjust patterns. While this book does not have alot of different patterns, the patterns in here are totally open to creativity and adjustment. The best part of the book was the "how to" when it comes to dogs. My lab is not the full knitted sweater type, but she will use the coats. I had to laugh at the "pillbox" hat and have been threatening to make her the ensemble for next October. This book was definitely worth every penny to me.

3 comments about Doggy Daycare: Simple Solutions Series (Simple Solutions (Irvine, Calif.).).

  1. This book is very basic and simple. A kindergarden student could perhaps benefit from it. Most of the information in this book is basic common sense. I was very disapointed with the size of it (a very short read with large print) and couldn't beleive I actually paid money for it! Do not buy.

  2. While the book was easy to read, it contained no more information than a free website about how to care for your dog when you are away from home.

  3. Great Book, I received it quickly and in mint condition.

5 comments about Getting Lucky: How One Special Dog Found Love and a Second Chance at Angel's Gate.

  1. i actually bought this book for my wifes birthday. it was an idea from my mom, since she found out how big an animal lover my wife (and I) are. i started to read the first chapter before i wrapped it up, and knew right away it would be a tear jerker. all in all, i bought this book because a portion of the proceeds go to Angels Gate. that is terrific for lots of animals out there, and my wife loved the idea of giving something back. if you even like animals, you should get this book. i pray every day now that more people in the world will follow Susan Marino's idea.

  2. Once you open the book, you can't put it down. My husband picked it up to
read the first couple of pages and did not put it down till he was done.
I did the same. Since I did some volunteer work at Angel's Gate during the summer, I was really able to connect with some of the animals and was able to see how much they are loved and cared for.

  3. This book is one that has to be read just to see what people go through when they lose a pet. I never thought I would be the one that was so attached to a pet. But I did for 13 years. Then when it was time. I made sure everything was is place for a pet funeral and made a great headstone for him. He was a loyal friend and I miss him dearly. I know that there are Angels Gates in heaven.

  4. Getting Lucky is for all of us who share our hearts and lives with our animals. This book will make you laugh and cry, sometimes both at once. Beautifully written, with humor, love and sadness that just pulls at your heart. You won't be able to put it down. Angel's Gate is truly a place where "Angels" go to be loved and let go. I dedicate this review to my own angel, Jakob M. who passed on only 1 year ago. I'm grateful that places like Angel's Gate exist and that there are people out there who know just how special these creatures are.

  5. This book is awesome! I recently lost my beloved Black Lab, Molson, who was 11 years old. I felt like I was there with all the pets in this book. I wish I lived near Angel's Gate... I would be there to volunteer in a minute! How wonderful these people are to take on such a heartfelt approach to helping these precious animals. I found myself smiling from ear to ear throughout the whole story! A must for all animal lovers to read!

5 comments about Borzoi (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).

  1. "The Complete Borzoi" by Lorraine Groshans and any of the BCOA publications are much better than this book. This book is very basic and is for the rank beginner. It is a fun read and a good start, but hopefully anyone interested in this wonderful breed will also read more. If you are looking for veterinary medical info that is professional in nature, you can try the Veterinary 5 Minute Consult. This is for the very serious dog enthusiast.

  2. I think this book is very good. I like the history of the dog's domestication, and I especially like how the Borzoi was developed in Russia.

When we were children back in the 1950's our parents and grandparents drummed into us to hate Communists. Of course, we went along with the instructions because we were children. By the time I got to college, in political science I was taught that Communism was just another form of political structure.

The poignant account in this book about the woman who had her hired man take the remaining noble Borzoi to be killed before the Bolshevics got to them gave me the real reason for hating them. The Bolshevics must have been totally useless persons if they slaughtered Borzoi when looting country estates of the nobles...

  3. This is an excellent book for someone looking to get into the Borzoi showing commuinity. Not for someone who just wants a pet Borzoi or for someone who already knows a lot about Borzoi (unless you want to do a bit of english pedigree research). I'm just getting into showing Borzoi and I found the book very informitive.

This book goes into a fair ammount of detail on conformation, bloodlines, breeding, showing, and genetics. I did happen to find the photo-manipulated pictures a bit of an annoyance though.

"The Complete Borzoi" by Lorraine Groshans (a fairly difficult book to find) and any of the BCOA publications are much better than this book. But, it's worth reading.

  4. I found this book full of useful practical advice and knowledge. I am new to this beautiful breed and use this book on a daily basis. A serious book but sprinkled with little gems of humour. Loved it.

  5. I was amazed at the lack of knowledge expressed by the writer of this book. Down to things like according to the book a borzoi has hare feet at the front and cat feet at the back.......only if your dog is walking backwards would that be true! I'm surprised this got published.
