3 comments about Train Your Dog in One Hour.

  1. Being a dog-lover, I looked forward to a solid training program to bond with my pet. Although the book contains some good information, it could easily fit in a 1 page magazine article. Please save your money.

  2. This book was a BIG disappointment. I was seduced by a TV show that featured the author demonstrating her technique, but when I got the book in hand, I realized it's all bark and no bite.

First of all, EVERY OTHER PAGE is an illustration. (Low-quality, I might add.) So, you aren't buying a book with a lot of information, because all that space is wasted on cartoons. Second, Ms. Butler doesn't bring anything new to the table. She reiterates the standard of dog training: be kind and consistent. I agree with that, but in order to work, the actual training CANNOT be done in one hour. (If you believe that, I have some diet pills that will help you lose about 50 pounds in one weekend.)

Maybe some people will find this book useful, but I don't think it covers anything thoroughly. There are a lot of other dog-training manuals out there that leave this title in the dust.

  3. My wife has had an affection for animals her whole life. After we got married, I learned that we were going to have a permanent resident which required a tremendous amount of care and attention. This was not something that I had expected or ever dreamed of. This so called beautiful, one-of-a-kind Irish Setter named Casey was not what I had expected during my courtship. Casey always required attention. So much attention that whenever anyone came to visit, she would jump on them immediately when they walked in the door, try to sit on their lap and if that didn't work, constantly nuzzle our guest's hand or leg til she was petted (just to mention one irritation of many). We were forever pulling her away when company came and locking her up afraid that her enthusiasm would turn into a scratch or bite on some unsuspecting relative! I knew something was wrong, but I couldn't make my wife realize this was excessive and had to stop. She began to see the light soon after the dog ate up our expensive furniture throughout our new condominium. This book has made a significant difference in my life and probably saved my marriage. Not only does the dog no longer chew up our possesions, but her behavior is totally socially acceptable in all environments including with children and even with different types of animals. Oh yes, I've saved a fortune on shoes and socks too! I have never reviewed a book before but can endorse this book without reservation, Ms Butler should receive a commendation from our condiminium association for helping us to keep Casey from destroying our whole building! This book works!!

5 comments about Havanese: A Complete and Reliable Handbook (Complete Handbook).

  1. GREAT BOOK! GOOD TIPS ON RAISING A HAVANESE AND THE HISTORY OF THIS DOG. I BOUGHT THIS BOOK TO BECOME MORE EDUCATED BEFORE I PURCHASE MY HAVANESE! I AM GLAD I DID! THANKS TO DOROTHY, I WILL BE OWNING MY DOG THIS SUMMER!

  2. The book, besides being out of date, fell way short of expectations in its day. There is a relatively short section specific to the breed followed by the typical, formulaic, generic 'any' dog breed advice found in book series of this ilk. The health information was minimal and glossed over the health issues found in the breed.

  3. This was a great book for NEW owners of a Havanese puppy. Full of great material and information on the breed. Written in an easy manner to gain quick knowledge of the history and care of the Havanese. I recommend it highly.

  4. Such as "The Havanese" By Diane Klumb (with Joanne Baldwin). It won the DWAA (Dog Writers' Association of America) Maxwell award for best Breed Book of the year in 2006.

Self-published, with all proceeds going to support the Havanese Genetics Project at Texas A&M, you can find it at Lulu.com.

It comes in both color and b&w versions. The color version is a Lulu bestseller!

  5. This book is very good for people who like to read about havanese's.

1 comments about New York Dogs.

  1. This is another boonie dog book review by Wolfie and Kansas. When we heard the title of Andrea Mohin's book of photographs, "New York Dogs", we thought it was more than a little oxymoronic. After all, how could dogs adapt to New York City? Imagine spending most of your life stuck in a small apartment, never being able to run free in the jungle chasing wild chickens, having humans follow you with a pooper scooper whenever you go for a stroll. When our noncanine animal companions of primate derivation first adopted Wolfie, they lived in an apartment complex in semi-urbanized Tamuning. Wolfie promptly ate the blinds, dug up flowers, barked at caniphobic neighbors, made messes in the neighbors' parking stalls, and forced our humans to spend their life savings to buy a house with a large yard bordering the boonies in Toto.

We were surprised to find that most of the dogs pictured in Ms. Mohin's book appear happy and healthy in their urban environment. Ms. Mohin's introductory essay also makes New York City seem reasonably hospitable for dogs. After seeing "New York Dogs", we've decided that maybe the Big Apple is not such a bad place after all: all those cars to chase; all those dumpsters and garbage cans to raid; and all those dogs in Ms. Mohin's pictures whom we'd like to meet. We still would not want to live in New York, but this book has convinced us that it might not be a bad place to visit (if we could get around the stupid quarantine laws.

1 comments about Australian Barkers and Biters (A Vintage Dog Books Breed Classic - Australian Cattle Dog).

  1. While I have not read this book cover to cover, I can say that it gives an interesting perspective on dogs of Australia, including history and personal opinions of the author. That was not, however, what I was looking for in this book. I was looking for breed characteristics, behavior issues, and generalities of the breed. The title is also deceiving. I was looking for a book on the Australian Cattle Dog, and only one chapter is devoted to this dog. In that one chapter, most of the commentary is on herding and training the dog to herd. Overall I would say that it is a nice novelty book, but it doesn't give any really important or current information that a cattle dog owner would enjoy.

3 comments about Sneeze-Free Dog Breeds: Allergy Management And Breed Selection for the Allergic Dog Lover.

  1. Sneeze-Free Dog Breeds does an excellent job of describing how to keep your home as dander free as possible. The section describing each breed is thorough and easy to understand. The part on allergy medications is out of date; some drugs listed as prescription only are now available over the counter.

  2. I bought this book because my son is allergic to dogs. Some breeds give him the classic sneezing and itchy eyes. For that reaction, this book seems an interesting resource. Most breeds, however, cause my son to get hives. The hives generally appear where he has been licked by a dog. I had hoped that the subtitle of this book indicated that it might prove useful regarding that allergic reaction as well. Unfortunately, saliva is only mentioned twice in the book. One of the references (on page 44) is particularly ominous, but it does not clearly state whether any breeds cause less issues than others. Due to their coat type, some breeds do not clean themselves as much as others, and I wonder if that might make a difference? Also, some breeds just do not lick people as much as other breeds do. That might also be useful information. Overall, this book was a worthwhile purchase. It just did not cover one specific topic about which I had hoped to gather more information.

  3. My daughter is an animal lover, but recently found out that she is allergic to cats and dogs. Fortunately, these are her only allergies, but our cat does cause her to have rhinitis. She would really love to have a dog in spite of this. The allergist told us there were no hypoallergenic dogs, but this author does offer a different point of view.

This book is attractive, concise and gave me lots of ideas for how I can make owning animals a better experience for my animal loving (but allergic) daughter. My first step has been to remove the curtains from her room. This book makes the steps seem possible, not overwhelming.

5 comments about The Mastiff: Aristocratic Guardian (The Pure Bred Series).

  1. We've been researching breeders in the U.S. (California to Massachusetts), Canada and Australia for 2 years.

Let me tell you ... this book is REQUIRED reading for many of the top breeders.

Seemingly basic information such as "what type of food" is short-term information. DeeDee knows that the list of top quality dog foods changes every year. Food choice can also be a pedigree/line decision and is often in a puppy contract. Such basic information should be assessable from your quality breeder.

  2. I found this book a complete waist of time, I found it had too much filler information. I had purchased this book after reading the above reviews, but I was extremely disappointed. I paid full price for this book and understand why the price has dropped. Very good book are: Mastiff by Kim Campbell Thornton and The Mastiff, An Owners guide to a happy healthy Pet by John M. Becknell. With the above two books you will not be disappointed in your selection of either one. Feeding a OEM puppy is very important, and Ms. Andersson "would never presume to tell an owner what to feed their puppy". Well guess what, I purchased this book to find out what to feed by puppy. Good luck

  3. Knowledgable, well-written, fun, and useful. It's like chatting with a fellow Mastiff-maniac.
If you don't have a Mastiff already, get this book and read the chapter about how they will take over your life. If you aren't up to rearranging your life for your dogs, don't get a Mastiff - but they are worth it!

  4. If you only plan on buying one book about Mastiffs, this should be it. I own several mastiff books, but I go to this one when I need information. It is as great a refrence book for the first time owner as it is for the experienced breeder. Full of beautiful pictures, charming anecdotes and detailed history, this book is incredibly informative. Other than the dogs themselves this has been my best mastiff purchase. All mastiff owners and those thinking of becoming mastiff owners should own this book.

  5. As a first-time Mastiff-owned person, I was very happy when I received this book as a gift. From the moment I opened it, I knew that this book would be my Mastiff bible. It is filled with historic facts (did you know that Mastiffs were declawed, by law, in the middle ages! ), amusing stories about Mastiffs (you'll see your own dog in these tales), medical information, top producing dogs and bitches, and tons of pictures... this book has it all. Breeders and owners alike will delight in reading this book over and over again. If you are even considering brining one of these gentle giants into your life, this book is a must-read. Mastiffs are not for everyone, but for those of us who are lucky enough to be owned by a Mastiff, I can assure you that this book will become your other best friend. dee dee Anderson knows her audience well; we all love Mastiffs as much as she does.
