1 comments about Dog Psychology; The Basis of Dog Training,.

  1. I like the approach to this book. The author breaks everything down in "laymen" terms and gives you examples with his own experience as well. He also gives you tips on training (ie. conditioning for upland bird hunting, field trials, guarding) and to let the dog do their natural thing and how to enforce this as positive behavior. My pyrenees is pretty stubborn and after reading other books on "positive reinformcement only" i.e. treats I was starting to get discouraged. It was not doing the trick. but this book states that you need to find the "drive" behind the dog in order for positive reinforcement to work. If you feed them before training, obviously getting a treat won't work because there "drive" food, has already been met.

I was also surprised that many dog owners make the mistake of calling "come" to there dog when he runs away and won't listen to you.(Myself included). This is the wrong thing to do because your conditioning the dog to "run away" by associating the word "come" to it. How to solve this problem... You will have to read the book..

5 comments about The Complete Poodle Clipping and Grooming Book.

  1. I have yet to find a more comprehensive, practical book on poodle grooming. If this book is available at your library and you are considering buying a poodle, check it out! There's nothing better in print for unraveling the mystique of poodle grooming. Whether you wish to attempt grooming and clipping your own poodle or simply wish to become an educated consumer when taking your poodle to the professional groomer, you'll find enough detailed, easy-to-understand information in this book to do the job. Future editions could be improved by adding some color pictures and possibly a review of new grooming products, techniques and /or styles. Even so, when a book has been around this long and is still getting rave reviews, consider it a must-have for the poodle-owner's library.

  2. This book, along with the Oster poodle grooming video, were my lifelines when I first stumbled through grooming my black standard poodle almost 7 years ago. I have since bought other books on poodles, but the concise text, pictures and diagrams were extremely helpful in the beginning. I have opted for various pet trims instead of the traditional show trims as they are much easier to keep. I can now clip my poodle, trim, pluck hair, etc. better than some of the groomers I have taken him to. The initial equipment cost for anyone owning a standard poodle (clippers, table, scissors, etc.) is quite a chuck of money added already to the purchase price of the dog, but it is much more cost effective than spending $70-$100 for a good groomer every 6-8 weeks. I highly recommend this book and will buy the new edition when it comes out in November. I'll then pass this one on. My only recommendation, use some colour pictures next time too.

  3. without a doubt a " must have "book for the serious poodle owner who also wants to clip and groom their poodle.great step by step instructions for all the show clips and directions for brushing and cleaning your poodle are included. this is not a book about "poodles" as much as how to groom and clip your poodle.this book is invaluable to me as a fancier with show dreams....

  4. I have my first Poodle and am learning to groom. It's going fairly well, and this book tied a lot of loose ends together & answered questions. Pictures are good. Text gets to the point--very helpful.

  5. Wonderful and Fun book for the person who wants to clip their own poodle at home. I've been looking for many years for a book like this to come along! I loved the detailed pictures of the different poodle clips. Also, I learned many new aspects of grooming health that I did not know, previous to reading this book. Ms. Kalstone's book makes it easy for anybody's poodle to look like they came out of a professional grooming salon.

5 comments about The Total Shiba.

  1. I purchased this book expecting general information and training help. This book is largely made for show purposes. It has no useful information except if you want to breed and show the dog. I would not recommend the book for people wanting to know more about their Shiba Inu or wanting a training guide.

  2. Of all of the breed-specific books I've read that discuss Shiba Inus, this book is my hands-down favorite. It gives a thorough history of the breed, a detailed explanation of the breed's standard, a good chapter of advice on choosing and raising a Shiba puppy, and one of the most helpful and informative chapters I've read on breeding anywhere.

That said, I have to agree with those who wrote that it's not the book for everyone. The Total Shiba is geared more toward breeders than toward prospective buyers and enthusiasts. The content is breeding-focused and it lacks color photographs. Enthusiasts would enjoy the Complete Owner's Guide or the Kennel Club book more, as both are filled with beautiful pictures and content more geared toward their interests.

  3. I own a shiba inu and I love this kind of dog.
This wonderful book has all the info one should know about shibas together with fantastic BW pictures.
It is complete, clear and totally focused on shibas, not on dog puppies but on shiba puppies!
I also found the Japanese name selection very interesting.

  4. This book was interesting, historically, and if you are thiking about showing a Shiba. But if you just bought a Shiba, it gives you little details. I would recommend it for a coffee table book, but not if you are looking for details on your puppy and training advice unique to Shibas.

  5. This is my favorite Shiba book. I have been involved in the breed since 1987 and this book (to me) is a culmination of the years of knowledge and experience I had to glean by hanging out with the best. It has almost everything that a person would want to know about the Shiba Inu. The authors are highly knowlegeable and have been involved in the breed since before 1986. Fred Lanting, world renowned judge and Shiba Breeder, gives this book a glowing review...he calls it; concise, constructive, accurate, and comprehensive. In the back of the book are over 100 photos of the Shibas that were the foundation of the Shibas in America today. Many of the Shibas in Shibumi Shiba Inu's pedigrees are pictured there. I wish this book had been available in 1987.

2 comments about Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (Comprehensive Owners Guide) (Comprehensive Owners Guide).

  1. Although I received my dog two years ago, I enjoyed reading and learning about his breed's history. This book contains not only history and breed specific health concerns but also puppy care and training. A basic dog care book from puppy to senior with wonderful photographs.

  2. This is a succinct yet comprehensive guide for a current or prospective PBGV owner. Colorful, easy to read, and hitting all the basics, it's an ideal guide for someone trying to get an overview of the breed. Very "reader-friendly".

  1. A very nice pictorial pointing out the steps and positions for the dog and handler as well as side bars that give common issues you will find when training for each exercise.

If you aren't a deep reader then this book is up your alley. If you are looking for training theory and behavior, pass this one up.

  2. Great book with easy to follow step by step instructions which show you the fine details of teaching the behaviour

5 comments about KISS Guide to Raising a Puppy (Keep It Simple Series).

  1. I checked this book out from the library, along with the Complete Idiot's Guide Puppies and The Everything Puppy Book. I found this book to be superior to the other two. Great pictures, lots of information. Makes training a puupy seem very easy. We are using it right now to train out 9 week old puppy, Molly.

  2. I love this book. It is a very clear and concise overview of owning a new puppy. It covers a lot of information in a very easy format, even good for kids! Fun pictures and visually pleasing. Fun suggestions for activities with your dog too!

  3. I bought this book after reading its other Amazon reviews. I really like the book, and have found it to be thorough, well-organized, and a simple 'how to', covering a wide variety of areas that are important to puppy growth and well-being. A great starter book! BUT I did not realize that this book would come directly from the UK, hence many of its internal references and language, etc., are British. It's not a big deal, but I would have preferred to buy the 'Americanized' version, and in fact I did see it later in our local stores (and cheaper too, by the way). If I want other books in this KISS series, I'll definitely check our local stores!

  4. I can't say enough about this book, I have seen many dog books but this one is the best by far because it has everything you could need to know. I expecially lov eth what to do in an emergency section. It saved my dogs life! The training section is great because it has several ways to do things. This is the best book you can get, if you get no other book get this one, for your puppys sake.

  5. This is an EXCEPTIONAL resource that stacks up to a mountain of other books, videos, and friendly advice from just about everyone.

Before buying this book (on impulse during a pre-adoption "scouting mission" for equipment at a local pet store), I'd already acquired a half-dozen dog books, and as many videos (along with umpteen recordings of dog training shows on Animal Planet). I was not feeling the slightest need for another resource on how to raise our new dog. Until this very thorough work caught my eye.

This book is superbly clear, well organized, and visually entertaining. It trumps everything else in my substantial library of resources. (Okay, okay. Yes, I was afraid I'd screw up the little wonder's life -- and mine in the process.)

Ms. Palika addresses virtually every conceivable issue clearly and directly. Her well-crafted advice is presented in a very appealing, inviting format that has become the publisher's trademark.

The book's Table of Contents and index make quickly accessing vital information fast and easy in this well-structured handbook. Not only will you easily find what you're looking for, you'll get specific, understandable, definitive guidance when you land there.

Whether you are about to adopt a puppy, or already brought one into your life, you need competent guidance. If you could only buy one book on raising your puppy -- easily and happily -- into a successful lifetime companion, without question this is the ONE.

5 comments about Doga: Yoga For Dogs.

  1. If you've ever done yoga and you have a great appreciation for the zen of dogginess, you will enjoy this book. Even if you just like dogs, it should give you a laugh, but you'll probably appreciate it more if you're familiar with the ways of yoga.

It is definitely for people with a sense of humor--if you are looking for the definitive book on yoga positions and expect to teach yourself how to get into the perfect positions, well, go take a class from a human who can make sure you are properly aligned.

This book is fun, relaxing, and may inspire you to do yoga...but the most therapeutic thing about it is the laughter.

  2. This is a silly book and not worth the paper it is printed on. Not funny enough to be a joke and not real enough to be a useful tool of any sort.

  3. This was a relatively cute book, but please beware that it is not truly instructional and is not meant to teach one how to facilitate a Doggie Yoga class. This book would make a good gift for the yoga aficionado who also loves dogs and might be entertaining for a few minutes. I would have preferred to see a greater variety of dogs as well. However, I understand the author's vision in spotlighting only four in order to develop character. I would not pay full price for this book.

  4. Quite witty book of photos of young dogs in poses which look like familar yoga poses. It has imaginary commentary from the dogs.

Dog owners who do yoga will bark with delight.

  5. Dogs actually do breath correctly, humans don't unless taught. Dogs stretch when they sense the need, humans don't unless taught. Dogs are amazing to watch, there are many things innate to dogs (and most animals), that humans don't do, but probably should.

Breathing - Humans breath shallow inadequate, terse breaths. Why? Because we've forgotten how to breath correctly.

How do we learn to breath correctly? Well, at birth. Once born the baby should be placed on the mother's chest, before the cord is severed and taught to breath. There, feeling the breath come in and out of the mother, feeling the heart beat, the baby learns to breath. Most mothers will have to ensure THEY are breathing correctly to pass this Vital Information onto the babe.

Since dogs breath naturally, pups are brought close to the mother, umbilical chord usually intact and feel the breathing and the heartbeat and become one with the mother.

Okay... think about it. And that's precisely what this book does, it gets one thinking about things, that perhaps we normally wouldn't take the time nor have the inclination to discover.

I enjoyed the read, it was cute, informative and being a dog owner I could relate.

5 comments about Scotch & Toilet Water?: A Book of Dog Cartoons.

  1. Bought this as a gift. Recommend buying used, condition was totally perfect and with shipping only paid apx 5 bucks.
Book is nice, not as funny as I thought, but guess you need to appreciate that kind of humor.Still nice, just not ROFL.

  2. Already a New Yorker cartoon fan, I was excited to find this book in my vet's waiting room and had to get a copy for my husband. It's too funny. The facial expressions alone are worth the price.

  3. ...you'll love this book. Just flippin' hilarious. A great gift, too.

  4. As xpected, this was (is) great. It has given me LOL & tears.

  5. Smart, crisp cartoons - many followed by a chuckle or a good belly laugh. My older son and I spent a good part of a rainy afternoon laughing together. As a woman who lives with four dogs, Cullum really hit the spot on many of the witty quips.
